Hi, I would like to show you my character.

He is level three, and its my first time as a player (i been Dm for 2 years). His name is Alton Goodbarrel, halfling. He loves to eat. He is level 2 rogue, level 1 fighter. here are his stats (I been lucky on the rolls).

Buckler: This small metal shield is worn strapped to your forearm. You can use a bow or crossbow without penalty while carrying it. You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a –1 penalty on attack rolls while doing so. This penalty stacks with those that may apply for fighting with your off hand and for fighting with two weapons. In any case, if you use a weapon in your off hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round.

You can’t bash someone with a buckler.

You would get no bonus, infact only attack penalties for wearing a buckler on each forearm while using weaopns

How did you get this feat as your character doesn't have +8 BAB?

Did you mean Weapon Focus (Rapier)?

Not only that but I don't believe shield bonuses stack. So there wouldn't be any point to having two of them on anyways.

As the others have stated, drop the bucklers as they don't help you.

You don't qualify yet for Imp. Critical, and I'm assuming that you took Ftr as your first level since Weap Finesse requires +1 BaB.

You might want to look into Combat Reflexes as this will give you more attacks of opportunity. Dodge + Mobility might be good as it will let you run around the battlefield without much fear from AoO's.

You could look into Weap Focus Rapier as well to get an extra +1 to your attack.

Otherwise, it seems as though you have a pretty good idea where you're going with your character, you just need to brush up on the rules a little, or just make sure that your DM allows you to use the items/feats as you have described.

Yes, yes you are, darn power gamers! ... wait a second ... whats this!? its... its a construct!!!!!!! ahh! no criticle damage!!! arg!

... no you are not power gaming, though the 20 to dex AND the second sheild that you gain no benifite towards ac is a little much. My advise, I would try actually being a rogue for a while. While stealing and fighting go hand and hand, but an overpowered fighter who can do a hit worth 20 damage in one hit (is sneak attack multipled?) with a very illigal improved crit (you need +8 bro...) but if your DM doesn't cetch it (being the devil advocate of the devils advocate now) milk it for what its worth.

Its not that its powergaming, its cheating. Ok, cheating may be too harsh but at the vary least it represents oversight of a few important rules. I've bolded the rules violations so you can see them clearly and added my comments in red.Hi, I would like to show you my character.

Con 10 Using the point buy system they would equal 49 points

Wis 12 at you to maintain an appropriate challenge, this could be
Cha 15 a problem if the other players stats aren't this high.

Feats (in order i chose them)

Weapon Finesse Rapier
Improved Critical Rapier You don't qualify for this feat. Prerequisite is +8 BAB
Two Weapon Fighting

next feat : two weapon defence+improved two weapon fighting Two weapon defence provides a shield bonus to AC, which will not stack with your buckler

AC 22 Your AC is 21 (see buckler comments below), and only if you don't attack with both weapons, if you TWF you lose the benefit of your buckler

2 bucklers Bucklers give a shield bonus to AC, named bonuses don't stack therefore you cannot benefit from more than one shield. Furthermore you lose the benefits of the buckler if you make an attack with the arm that holds it.
Mithral chain shirt (4 armor + 5 dex)
+ 1 size

HP 19

Attacks (BAB +2)

2 Rapier 1d4 (15-20/x2) +4/+4 Your attack bonus looks too high. Your melee attack bonus with the rapier is +7 if you only use one of them, which would allow you to keep your shield bonus to AC. Your off hand weapon isn't light, which increases the penalties for TWF, I believe to -4/-4 (I can't verify this right now since I'm at work) which would give you +3/+3.

Im always flankingI think you mean you try to flank whenever possible since there is no way by the rules that I'm aware of to always be flanking.

Rules oversights not withstanding, no this isn't a game breaking character, but you do need to be sure to correct these oversights and work to understand the rules better, especially for someone who's been DMing for two years.

Definately not powergaming my friend, infact if anything i'd say he needs beefing up if he's a main fighter.

I'm DMing a campaign at the mo and one of the characters is played by a powergaming his stats are:-

STR 30
DEX 14
CON 16
INT 18
WIS 22
CHR 17

He's a half-dragon half-ogre who's pretty hard. But it doesn't matter in our campaign because the other players and baddies have sufficient abilities to keep up.
It only matters if one character is significantly better than the others.

I'd say your character was a run-of-the-mill halfling, as long as he uses his abilities to fill his role in the party then he'll be fine.

Hello. Allow me to critique this (brutally) honestly.

Abilities

Str 11
Con 10
Dex 20
Int 18
Wis 12
Cha 15
You must have rolled these. This isn't possible with any point system I know of. Looks like you got lucky, and like any smart player, you put the scores where they will do the most good.

Feats (in order i chose them)

Weapon Finesse Rapier
Improved Critical Rapier
Two Weapon Fighting

next feat : two weapon defence+improved two weapon fighting
Okay, first of all, the glaring thing to me, is you only have a base attack of +2, and you need +8 base attack (and Weapon Focus with said weapon) for Improved Critical. Oh, and you need a base attack of +6 for ITWF.

Also, I believe you need a +1 base attack for Weapon Finesse. So unless your first level was as a fighter, you couldn't have selected this feat first. Taking a look at your skills, I can see your first level was rogue. Anyway, this is just semantics at this point, as you now qualify for the feat at level 3.

To replace Improved Critical, I would suggest Two-Weapon Defense. That way, you can have a +1 shield bonus without all the nasty things that come with having a buckler strapped to your arm.

Oh, and You don't need to specify a weapon for Weapon Finesse. All the weapons it lists in the feat are available for use in that way once you take the feat.

AC 22

2 bucklers
Mithral chain shirt (4 armor + 5 dex)
+ 1 size
No real sense in having two shields at all, since shield bonuses don't stack. At best, you should be at an AC of 21 (touch 16, flat-footed 15) right now. As I said before, ditch both bucklers and just take TWD in place of Improved Critical.

HP 19
All I can say is that you got very lucky with those HD rolls.

Attacks (BAB +2)

2 Rapier 1d4 (15-20/x2) +4/+4
Okay, rapiers are one-handed weapons, imposing a -4/-4 penalty when used in the off hand (and TWF). The best bonus you should be getting, all told, is +3/+3 (or +5/+5 if you are flanking).

Im always flanking
Now either you mean that you will only enter combat in order to flank someone or you have discovered the holy grail of rogues everywhere.

Skills (only ranks)

I actually don't see anything wrong here. I would recommend a different skill set, but that is just me.

Well, I gave you what I thought. Other than some rules corrections, he looks pretty good, but seems to depend on flanking. I really think his next feat should be Weapon Focus with a rapier.

I didn't mean to offend but the fact that you have a feat you do not qualify for (Improved Crit), took a feat at a level you could not possibly have qualified for it (Weapon Focus), are planning to take a feat at your next level that you could not qualify for (Improved Two Weapon Fighting), have misunderstood the bonus stacking rules (two bucklers, and planning to take the TWD feat, all of which are shield bonuses) all seem to demonstrate a lack of understanding of the rules.

I don't intend this to be a putdown, everyone makes mistakes, my advice was just to read your feats and the rules for bonuses more carefully, maybe I should have phrased it differently.

When I first posted you hadn't told us the part about your DM changing the rapier to light, something I disagree with and would not have done, but if thats the case your attack bonuses are correctly calculated.

This isn't an error but these are very high stats. Using the point buy system they would equal 49 points. The CR system is balanced at a 25 point buy, which means your DM will have to throw more challenging opponents at you to maintain an appropriate challenge, this could be a problem if the other players stats aren't this high.

Hello, sorry to go a bit off topic here, but it was said that the CR system is based on 25 point buy. Now I've been hearing allot of "Point Buy" this and that, but I don't know what it actually is. Can someone explain it?

As for the character, I’d be careful using two Rapiers, as they have a low hp (2 IIRC) and can be sundered pretty easily. And they only do Piercing Dmg, not good if you have to go up against something only effected by Slashing or Bludgeoning. I’d suggest carrying another Light martial weapon around with you just in case. Other then that it looks good as far as I can tell.

Point buy is an alternate ability score generation method described in the DMG, page 125 if memory serves, but don't hold me to that. Anyway, every player gets a certain number of points to spend on his stats. All stats start at 8 and the cost to increase them increases as you get to higher stats like so. Points are spent and then racial adjustments applied to those finished numbers.

8= 0 points
9= 1 point
10= 2 points
11= 3 points
12= 4 points
13= 5 points
14= 6 points
15= 8 points
16= 10 points
17= 13 points
18= 16 points

The CR system is balance around characters created using a 25 point buy for ability scores. Coshise character come out to 51 points (I forgot to account for the strength penalty when I made my first calculations since his scores before racial adjustments are 13 (5 points), 10 (2 points), 18 (16 points), 18 (16 points), 12 (4 points) and 15 (8 poinst) for a grand total of 51

but if your DM doesn't cetch it (being the devil advocate of the devils advocate now) milk it for what its worth.

That's absolutely the wrong thing to do. Thinking that pulling one over on the DM will make your game more rewarding is a completely false idea. Pointing out where your DM made mistakes in your error will only add to the games fun and will prevent the DM from figuring out that you're lying. Also, the things you can exploit that your DM doesn't understand... work in his favor too.

You think those scores are broken? I'm DMing and (we roll ability scores) my players asked: can we all have the same stats? So I said, sure.

They rolled 18, 17, 16, and 3 more scores, all of which are 10+.

The day before yesterday the fighter and gnome illusionist (both level 8) beat the level 15 hobgoblin fighter (straight from the DMG).

00_Whupass

06-02-06, 05:04 PM
I didn't say they were broken I said they were higher than the baseline assumption used in the CR system and the DM would have to adjust to compensate.

That said, this is the reason I prefer point buy to rolling. Rolling can create a vast disparity between two PCs within the same party, and can also create a disparity between the balance point the core rules were written at and the power level of a particular party. Point buy removes these concerns and allows the DM to detirmine the relative power level of the campaign, and adjust the core rule assumptions to compensate, if his campaign is above or below the core powercurve, without unfairly penalizing the one player who didn't roll as well as his fellows.

I had a character with 18,18,18,18,13,16 or something like that once. In those slots, not rolled in that order. He was a rogue. A pretty tough one in combat. And he had a hell of a lot of skills. Being an elf probably helped with the dex too. So final dex was 20 and final con was 16. XD

I think I understand, but just to clarify, I have two characters both of them rolled with the house rule of “re-roll a single ‘1’ per roll”. Hence, if you roll a 6 + 1 + 3 + 1, you could re-roll only a single ‘1’ from that roll.

My first Character before racial Adjustments,
STR 18 - 8 = 10
CON 16 – 8 = 8
DEX 14 – 8 = 6
INT 12 – 8 = 4
WIS 15 - 8 = 7
CHA 14 – 8 = 6
And thus would equal a 41 point buy, correct?

and my Second Character, Str 18, Dex 15, Con 15, Int 10, Wis 13, Cha 10, would then be a 33 point buy, correct?

I’ve heard people say 20 point buy is way to low, 35 is the norm, and I’ve heard 25 is the average... Then would 40 point buy be overpowering for a campaign if all the characters used it?
00_Whupass

06-02-06, 05:32 PM
No that's incorrect. Look at the table I posted again, the points aren't always a 1:1 ratio of points:ability score, the cost increases as you put more points into a score. Here are the characters you posted and how many points each would have cost in the point buy system.

STR 18 (16 points)
CON 16 (10 Points)
DEX 14 (6 points)
INT 12 (4 points)
WIS 15 (8 points)
CHA 14 (6 points)
Grand total 50 points

and my Second Character, Str 18, Dex 15, Con 15, Int 10, Wis 13, Cha 10,
This character would be 41 points

I’ve heard people say 20 point buy is way to low, 35 is the norm, and I’ve heard 25 is the average... Then would 40 point buy be overpowering for a campaign if all the characters used it? This is a two fold question, you have to consider the characters in relation to one another, and you have to consider the characters in relation to thier opponents.

If all the player's use the same point buy then yes they are balance against one another regardless of how many points the DM gave them to work with. However the Challenge Rating for monster in the Monster Manual was calculated when compared to 25 point buy PCs, this means that 40 point buy PCs are less challenged by a Goblin than 25 point buy PCs and XP awards, and Encounter Level need to be adjusted to compensate.

I see nothing wrong with this character.

Weaknesses include a low Will save, pitiful damage against crit-immune foes, low HP (Con10 for a frontliner?!?!) and a complete waste of the heavy armor class feature (dex-based).

I would have made this guy a rogue, wizard, bard or ranger with that small stature and those stats. If you want a martial character, I'd have gone for pure Ranger. You get the TWF abilities you want (3 free combat feats by level 11, plus endurance and track which are both useful... 5 bonus feats instead of the Fighter's 11, but you also get class abilities and spells) plus an animal companion (warpony or riding dog), and more skill points to become a solid little cavalry unit, plus a little magic and no class abilities are wasted. Everything is useful to you in the Ranger class.

He's a half-dragon half-ogre who's pretty hard.

Whoa, hold on a second, he's swallowed that much LA and he's rocking? He probably doesn't have many hp's, and having a front line fighter go down in 2 hits is not good.

While yes I agree that the above player is powergaming it is not an apples to apples comparison to hold this character up to Coshise's, since the above character is at least ECL 8 and Coshise character is ECL 3

ECL 8? I hope he's higher then that. Half-Dragon(MM) is LA +3, and Half-Ogre(Races of Destiny) is LA +2 for a plus +5 total. If 00 is right, and your playing at ECL 8, that horrible, as your front line fighter with only have a BAB of +3, have half the feats he'd have otherwise, and have 42 hps MAX with a 16 con, and that's assuming he rolled maximum for all 3d10 of it.

One single attack from a Half-Orc melee type of ECL 8 with power attack would down him, assuming a ranged attacking monster didn't do him in first. A ECL 8 warlock would absolutely destroy him.

Summary: For a melee type, anything higher then +1 is a very, very bad idea, exception being if you play under the LA buy-off rules, then you can go up to +3. The only exception to this rules is templates/races that just friggen rock. Feral(SS) and Mineral Warrior(Und) instantly come to mind.

For casters, just say no to LA.

Ok, now that the LA rant is over, one comment. The above poster wasn't powergaming. Powergaming is making the most effective character possible inside the rules of the game. His build broke many rules, but he appears to have misread a few things, so it's easy enough to fix. When you realize your mistake, and don't take steps to fix it, or break the rules and cheat intentionally, you've crossed into munchkinism. Don't promote munchkinism!

thank you everyone for pointing all the problem with my character. Next time ill check in the feat list before thinking about taking one. ill switch my imp crit for two weapon def i'll also switch one of my rapier for a kukri and ill just wait so i have the money to make em both keen. Really, I don't see how this character is powergaming at all. Compare it with the following:

Generic Grunt (3rd level half-orc fighter, 25 point buy):

Str 18
Dex 13
Con 14
Int 8
Wis 8
Cha 6

Equipment: Full Plate, Large Shield, Bastard Sword

Feats: EWP (Bastard Sword), WF (Bastard Sword), Power Attack, Cleave

Skills: Intimidate +4

Attacks: Bastard Sword +8 (d10+4)
AC: 21
HPs: 27 (average rolls)

Compared to the halfling, this guy has exactly the same AC, substantially better to-hit bonuses and nearly twice as much damage (average 9.5 compared to average 5). He's a 25-point buy compared to a 49-point buy equivalent rolled. He can Power Attack to take his to-hit bonus down to +5 (still better than the halfling) and deal two-and-a-half times the amount of damage of the halfling, who in any event can only attack twice when he has not moved. His movement speed is the same. He can use Cleave, enabling him to carve through opponents at a much quicker rate than the halfling. If he wishes, he can drop the shield to use his bastard sword two-handed, upping the damage to d10+6. If he Power Attacks whilst using it two-handed, he can increase his maximum damage to d10+12, three-and-a-half times as much as the halfling, as well as being infinitely more effective against low-level creatures with DR such as skeletons, whom the halfling will never ever even scratch. He has nearly half as many hit points again, on average rolls.

The halfling isn't a raw fighting machine. It trades off pure fighting ability for a wider skill base, with a greater array of ability points to work with. There is absolutely nothing wrong or overpowered about it.

A 'light' weapon isn't based off the weight, it's based off the size, maybe with some exceptions, I'm not sure. But a rapier shouldn't be made light because it weighs as much as a shortsword, because it's still longer.
Would it be ok to make a really light darkwood quarterstaff and allow that as a light weapon because it's 1lb or something? TWF with quarterstaff cheese! Haha.

Is the Kukri still an exotic weapon in 3.5?
If it changed to martial weapon and all you're looking for is a weapon with a high probability at a critical this might be just the thing for an off hand weapon... and I think it's even slashing...

It's +1. It's also in the Core Rulebooks, along with feats and their prerequisites. (Sorry, but I'm gonna keep mentioning it, I find it funny, no personal offense to you. :D )
