| Choronis06-17-04, 01:01 PM | ok, in our campaign world, we all take a turn DMing the world and, thus, we have multiple characters. I made a character that was a Halfling Paladin of Yondalla and I thought that was gonna be a fun character to play but after one mission completed with her, I realized that she's kind of dull. My other characters have like at least a 1 page biography. Even my cohort for one of my characters has a 1.5 page biography. My paladin? Nothing. I got no character concept for her. I mean, should you continue playing a character you're not having fun with? I got another character that I've made that I actually have a biography for instead of "insert random class with a random race with a random name" with my Paladin. She's an Elven Rogue that came from a family of thieves that were living in poverty. Because she couldn't count on anyone else when she was younger, she has complete confidence in her abilities. Now, is this right/reasonable of me to quit my Paladin in lue of my Rogue? |
| Sidious06-17-04, 01:05 PM | Depends on how much your party needs you, really... If you're the tank, I'd still retire the paladin but come back with something to fill the hole. |
| Beamup06-17-04, 01:05 PM | Well, you should consult with the DM, and certainly should not make a habit of such changes. But, if you're not having fun with your paladin and think the rogue would be more enjoyable, that is an excellent reason to switch. The DM may choose to impose some penalties, however - up to and including starting one or more levels behind the rest of the group. Basically, talk with your DM about the details, but your desire to switch is not unreasonable given what you've said. |
| RobTzu06-17-04, 03:23 PM | What Beamup said. There is no point playing if you are not having fun, you'll end up not playing as much if at all, and that helps no one. If your DM won't let you change, well Paladins are the easiest character to kill "in character". |
| Janfar06-17-04, 04:15 PM | I agree with the above statements, but if I was the DM I would make you come back a level lower, kind of like you had been raised from the dead with a raise dead spell...thats how I usually handle ppl making new characters. The reason behind this was because I was a player in a game where all the players were indecisive about what characters they wanted. They werent really concerned with the story, just how much damage their character could do. If they saw a character who could do something better, they wanted to be that character. However, with your individual situation, I think you're more than entitled to a new character. I probably would still enforce my rule, but thats up to your DM. As Sidious said, don't let your party down if your the main tank, get a different tank type. |
| Choronis06-17-04, 06:09 PM | Well, each player has 3 characters: Me: Mystic Theurge, Tattooed Monk (with a soon-to-be Sacred Fist Cohort) and Paladin (soon to be retired with a UMD Rogue) Friend 1: Druid (soon to be Natures Warrior and Warshaper), Swashbuckler, Cleric of Elhonna Friend 2: VoP Monk, Rogue/Ranger (think Bounty Hunter), Arcane Trickster Friend 3: Ranger/Wizard, Sorcerer, VoP Bard Friend 4: Paladin of Moradin, Cleric of Nerull, Cleric of Obad-Hai The reason why we have 3 characters 3 is that we're doing a huge "Mass World" Campaign and we plan on keeping this World once our characters reach epic and stuff. Once they hit Epic, apparently we're going to have them "whisked away" to another more powerful plane and start fresh again with the same landscape. The problem right now is that we have no way with UMD. The closest we have is the Swashbuckler and he's got only like 3 Ranks in it. Plus, with my Rogue, I'm taking 4 Levels of Fighter for Weapon Spec (I'm TWF Short Swords) so I can tank, to a degree. Thank you for your opinions. I just wanted to see if this was a good idea in other peoples eyes before my next session (which is tomorrow). |
| Gnarl06-18-04, 12:28 PM | Not having fun with a character is a good enough reason to retire it. And a 50 page background has nothing to do with it. If all your friends are both DM and players, I'm pretty sure they would understand. Don't make retiring players a habit am I'm pretty sure nobody will complain. Try a female dwarf bard. |
