| Majick09-06-07, 10:03 AM | Ok, basically i have a Kalashtar Warblade (the one in my sig) and have been looking at lots of ways to make him awesome through the use of items and monies/upgrades. My DM has given us a fair bit of cash (or at least, we have somehow ended up with a fair bit of cash through various means) and i have gone about getting a new arm and eye made for me (cause i didn't have any to start with, long story) Anyway, i have got a custom arm being made for me from Deepcrystal and am going to get my weapon (A great scimitar) made of it too. The arm will give me a +4 inherent bonus to strength. Also, i am probably going to be getting an eye that can give me blindsight 60ft shortly as well. Now, i am only a level 6 character and i rolled an 18 for strength, so 22 strength after the arm with permanent 60ft blindsight, and a Warblade (which a lot of people think is cheezy compared to regular combat classes because of it's power) He is obviously a very distinct character and i love that about him but, do you guys think this will unbalance the game at all? Other party: Barbarian 4 / Fighter 2 Sorcerer 6 Dragon Shaman 6 Scout 6 and... hell i don't know what he is, Thri-keen psychic warrior or something |
| RobbyPants09-06-07, 10:16 AM | Well, to say if it's too much, I guess I have to know if the other PCs have similar boosts. In general... Anyway, i have got a custom arm being made for me from Deepcrystal and am going to get my weapon (A great scimitar) made of it too. The arm will give me a +4 inherent bonus to strength. The inherent bonus seems kind of odd. I would think if you do something more like an enhancement bonus (similar to a Belt of Giant Strength) would be more suitable. This keeps it from stacking with similar items. The only things I can think of that grant an inherent bonus are Wishes and the magic Tomes and Manuals. That would keep it's power equal to a 16,000 gp item (which under "normal" guidlines) is getting high for a 6th level character. If everyone else has similar items, I don't see it as a problem. Also, i am probably going to be getting an eye that can give me blindsight 60ft shortly as well. That is pretty potent. Blindsight is a very nice ability. Now, i am only a level 6 character and i rolled an 18 for strength, so 22 strength after the arm with permanent 60ft blindsight, and a Warblade (which a lot of people think is cheezy compared to regular combat classes because of it's power) Now, I don't know the specifics of your lost arm, but it seems pretty unlikely that you could lose an arm and maintain an 18 Strength (unless there are some racial bonuses in play?). There are no specific rules that I know of for losing limbs and ability penalties, but still, it just seems to make sense to me. I guess the way I'd work it is that I'd have the magical arm just restore whatever penalties I assigned, and maybe give you something like a 1d4 or 1d6 slam attack (more for fluff than anything). Getting a +4 Str bonus from it isn't too crazy, but I'd have it count as about a 16,000 gp item for purposes of keeping the group's treasure fairly evenly distributed. |

We based it on some of the arm grafts in the Book of Vile Darkness (they are all inherent) market price was 40k but i supplied all the materials, plans and another 15k to an artificer who does it for 25% cheaper (through feats) That is pretty potent. Blindsight is a very nice ability. It's based on an item that normally costs 9000 (takes of goggle slot) that is always active, having it made into an eye is double price, but then i got an artificer buddy who gets 25% off, so 13,500gp Now, I don't know the specifics of your lost arm, but it seems pretty unlikely that you could lose an arm and maintain an 18 Strength (unless there are some racial bonuses in play?). He said something like giving me a slam attack, yeah, 1d6 i think he said was gonna be it. As for the not being able to maintain 18 strength, i rolled an 18, so the DM simply said i have the 18 in that one arm. I took an exotic weapon (as stated) and monkey grip to make up for it (2d6 18-20/X2) with -2 to hit |
| Phrennzy09-06-07, 11:10 AM | What are you, the crystal bionic man? Replacing an eye and an arm - were they damaged and in need of replacement? Also, be prepared for a negative reaction from most NPCs, as your half crystal freakshow steps up to the bar, and torchlight is reflected off your crystal eye which, for all they know, is about to suck in their soul. |

The Arm is worth alot......ALOT(if you just go by the price of enhancement bonus it'll cost 32k, it isn't an enhancement bonus it cost alot more. This is artifact type stuff, normally don't give this to players before epic level and for balance reasons even then adding inherent bonuses to stats is probably a bad thing). And a 18str in this arm doesn't really make any sense in this version of D&D. I remember seeing similar things in FR and in certain drow books back in the day, but they got rid of that in 3.5 as far as I can tell. Str doesn't go by how strong your arm is, if you only used your arm your attack would be quite weak. I don't remember exactly where to find them, but there is a blindfold of blindsense. But anything with blindsight in it would probably cost a fortune(the spells used to make it permanent would be very expensive). I'm all for making unique items, but stretching this far from the guidelines with a very large party could have very unpleasant side effects. I wouldn't suggest having a "buddy" npc give such a huge discount on any magic item(hes got to be fairly high level to make most of this). This is the equivalent of a walmart magic item shop, which I personally hate. If you guys are ok with throwing the wealth guidelines out the window then why ask if its to much? With just those items you quadruple what your character should have at 6th level(somewhere near 10th level gear equivilant) |

You told us the discount. So the Real price is 15 K + materials for +4... too low. +4 enhancement is 16 K. Inherent would be like triple that: 45 K at least It's based on an item that normally costs 9000 (takes of goggle slot) that is always active, having it made into an eye is double price, but then i got an artificer buddy who gets 25% off, so 13,500gp Seems fine. |
| Meep32609-06-07, 01:45 PM | Where are you getting this from Book of Vile Darkness? I can't seem to find it, but a +4 inherent bonus is expensive (requireing wishes and whatnot something around 120k, don't feel like looking it up). Also I'd love to see which item gives you Blindsight, can you give meh a link to it? |

| dragonseth09-06-07, 02:29 PM | Blindsight comes from the A&EG, the Blindfold of True Darkness. Blindsight 60 feet, but completely blocks the wearer's normal vision. 9k gp. |
| DrMorganes09-06-07, 02:33 PM | At Level 6, that is way too much. Your character's total wealth should be in the neighborhood of 13K, with no more than half of that invested in any single item. A +4 bonus to an ability score, even as an enhancement bonus, is high-level stuff. Blindsight is major as well. For comparison, the Scout class gets Blindsense as a class feature somewhere around Level 15, and Blindsight at Level 20. This is what I'd allow as a DM: A deep crystal arm grafted to you, with no special enhancements, at your level. Keep in mind that you can psionically charge deep crystal for 2pp to do an extra 2d6 on your next attack. Since deep crystal adds +1000 to the cost of a given item, we'll call it a +1 equivalent for purposes of pricing. The arm itself is going to be a special item, delicately crafted and psionically charged to function as a normal arm. I'll need to think on pricing for this, but it won't be cheap. Additionally you're going to stick out like a sore thumb. -10 to Disguise Checks, and perhaps a -2 modifier to checks involving social skills as well. (What kind of a freak has a crystal arm?!) For the eye, I'd start it out as a continuously active item granting sight (Craft Universal Item, Manifester Level 3, Clairvoyant Sense (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/clairvoyantSense.htm)). Figure the price normally and upgrade from there. Powers unrelated to perception would cost 1.5 times the normal price to add, per the slot affinity rules. |
| Majick09-07-07, 03:18 AM | Hmm, interesting ideas guys. As for the post about do i NEED a new arm and eye. Yes, yes i do. Because *tadaaaaa* i started WITHOUT them for role-play purposes. As in, hasn't had them since he was a kid (because the got eaten, mauled, charred, slashed and raked off by the Enlightened and their minions) It seems the consensus is that the original 40k price for the arm was too little? I understand completely that with discounts then it would be even worse. As for the blindsight item, it is a fair bit more powerful because i don't lose normal sight (still got one good eye!) and it doesn't take up that slot. hmm... have to take this up with the DM and see what he thinks... |

The regenerate spell should get your body parts back. It is cheaper and more reasonable than your previous plan, and your DM needs to hold back on the cash or he will be posting here in a few days asking for advice on how to stop a below 10 level party with near epic weapons. I almost forgot, but as for the blindsight at 6th level the answer should be no, but I am not the DM. |
| Phrennzy09-07-07, 10:27 AM | If you started off without an arm and an eye for roleplay purposes, you can bet that if I were DM, the crystal arm and/or eye would have roleplay consequences of their own. Go for regeneration, as suggested, since wouldn't your character rather be whole again instead of a half-crystalline freak? |
| moriarty1309-07-07, 11:46 AM | It's not too much if the other characters are getting similar bonuses and gifts. You have somewhere between 10 and 20 times what a normal 6th level character should have in terms of magic items, at least. Certainly that level of wealth should up your ECL by about 2 levels or so I'd guess, especially if everyone else has similar perks. A group of level 6 characters should fight CR 6 encounters. Your group should probably be considered level 8 or so for the sake of exp advancement. CR6 stuff just won't be a challenge. If your DM is ok with those things and the other characters in the group aren't yelling and screaming because you have 150k worth of stuff and they just got masterwork clubs, then go nuts... |
