So this is the issue. It's a small party, just so ya know (2-3 players) for modules in Ptolus campaign setting.

Player A (The confirmed other player) is playing an Artificer (DM Approved).

Ptolus doesn't have Psionics. Barbarians, Druids, and Rangers are all but unheard of in the setting. (They're -extremely- rare.) The only Deity that I have access to is one I can't stand, thus ruling out Paladins and Clerics. Necromancy spells are illegal in the city where the game takes place, as are mind-affecting spells.

So this leaves me with Fighter, Rogue, Bard, Wizard, or Sorcerer. With the other player being an Artificer, a Wizard isn't as great at utility as he normally is. (Atleast not starting out at level 1..) Sorcerers are also more common in Ptolus, but usefulness is in question.

Fighters bore me to tears. Just picking feats gets old.. Rogue effectiveness in a 2 man game is questionable. And I'm not a huge fan of Bards in small groups (Big games, I'll take a bard. I'll enjoy it.. Small games? Not so much..)

Now I have Players Handbook II, and I almost want to try to pitch Dragon Shaman or Duskblade to the DM, but the question is how to fit them into the game.

Duskblades are easy. Really, they're just swordsmen who use magic. If other types of arcane casters are common, and so are fighters, then all you have to do is say to your DM that some people hybridize their combat and magic talents, and you're gold.

Dragon Shamans are a bit harder. If dragons play a significant part in the campaign, then it's not so hard. Any mortal who gets enough exposure to dragonkind may consider taking up that class. There could then be shamans training other shamans. However, if dragons are NOT a big force in your world, or don't interact much with even the frontiers of human society... I don't know what you can do.

Yea, that was the issue I was encountering as well. Though those auras would be a thing of beauty in a small party where we're hard pressed as is.. (Senses out of combat, Energy Shield during combat, Fast Healing right after combat..)

I'm playing in a Ptolus game and we have a ranger in our group. She is working out fine. You could go with a Duskblade or a Hexblade from CW. So what if mind-altering spells are against the law, after all it's only illegal if you get caught.

My group is also playing in a Ptolus game rangers and druids aren't unheard of in the city. it sucks that you are being limited to one deity, there are some really cool new ones, new domains and spells. our cleric has out damaged almost everyone with his firearms and such.

If you have acess to the book for it, might I recommend the scout? It's damage mechanic is easier to use solo or with minimal support than the rogues, and it offers similar bonuses of good damage and useful skills. In addition, the slightly 'wilderness' focus will complement the artificer, without overlapping too much (and two people with disable device and trapfinding is a /good/ kind of overlap) I recommend the improved manyshot/expeditious dodge series of feats, as a personal favorite.

If you don't like the only diety, then don't worship it. The rules do state that a cleric or palidan does not have to revere a diety at all. In the case of clerics, this lets them pick their domains from all of them (exception: to pick an alignment domain, you must be that alignment), a much broader category than any diety provides. Plus, if you choose to be neutral, you can cast any spells as well as get the choice for turning or rebuking undead.

In the case of palidans, if they don't revere anyone, they just uphold the ideals they follow, not some god's ideas.

Try Warblade. It's awesome as hell.
