| Tolbolt_RedWing03-18-06, 03:21 AM | Hello I have been out of touch with D&D for a long time. the books I used were the first ones. I just decided to get back into it and when I searched the web. I was shocked at all of the new things that deals with Charaters. Back when I played it was very simple. So here is the problem. Beside getting a charater sheet.. WERE do I begin??? Any help would be greatly welcome. |
| Thungrum_The_Exile03-18-06, 03:57 AM | Well here are the basic progressions (there are two ways of doing it) My preferred way Do I want to be magic/close combat/ranged combat/stealth then depending on which of those four (or combination thereof) you decide you are interested in read the classes which apply. (eg, ranged combat- fighter, ranger, rouge (to a lesser extent).) after deciding which one fits your personallity best look at what race best fits that description. The other way I use (only sometimes) What is a cool race- What is that race most capable of being good at- (insert the earlier 4 categories here) and once again narrow it down. or if you are a really divergent thinker (this way only just occured to me, I must try it soon) What is a cool weapon What classes can use that weapon to its best ability what race fits the chosen class Once you have decided on what race and class you are pretty set for the basics. Post it here somewhere, and tell us whether you like to powergame or game "fluffily" (I hate that word) or somewhere in between. |
| Ryusage03-18-06, 07:44 AM | read the player's handbook cover to cover. then make a character from there following above advice. |
| MasterOfPsychic03-18-06, 08:18 AM | Or use the Roleplaying way, rather than the Rollplaying one: 1)Think about a character concept, a story and attitude... 2)Then you figure out which class would fit, and feats, skills and races as well... Read PHB cover to cover AFTER you figured out point one (as game knowledge would only ruin your creativity) |
| Tolbolt_RedWing03-18-06, 04:30 PM | Thank you all for the great advise. As soon as I get done here, I am going to read the PHB from cover to cover. Once I figure out who and what my charater is going to be. I'll let you all know. And once again Thanks. |
| taradusis04-12-06, 09:13 PM | After you've played your first character and met your inevitable demise consider getting the SAVAGE SPECIES book for character and racial variations? :) |
| taradusis06-29-06, 09:42 PM | So,wade through the pc books yet? |
| LuckyLeprechaun06-29-06, 10:11 PM | You resurrected this long dead post to ask a question you could of asked by PM? |
| utilitarian06-29-06, 10:17 PM | After you've played your first character and met your inevitable demise consider getting the SAVAGE SPECIES book for character and racial variations? :) Or, realize that Savage Species is a very specific source book and not intended for general use in the average campaign. Seriously, not everyone needs to play an Astral Deva. While I appreceate the flavor of Savage Spieces, I hate that so many people are using it to justify playing as some kind of ridiculous monster in thier next capaign, regardless of whether it's appropreate /rant off |
