That is, Rogue.

Rouge is a colour, shade of red, and often used as a cosmetic.

Rogue is a person who lives outside of normal social boundries. In D&D Rogue replaces the old 'Thief' class on the basis that Rogues do not necessarily steal (HAHAHA!).

Pogue is another misspelling, and is gealic for 'kiss'. The Pogues are an Irish band who had to change their name to avoid being boycotted by the BBC after an irate caller told an enthusiastic DJ what Pogue Ma Hone really meant (HINT: the first two word mean Kiss My ...).

This has been a public information thread on behalf of those who can spell and have heard enough of all the jokes about 'rouge' from those who think that after years of misspelling they are still funny.

Thank you for your time and attention. We now return you to your normal service.

Y'know, I've seen other forums where they actually make fun of you for trying to chastise people for their poor grammar.
Yeah, "Grammar Nazis" they called those people.

Honestly, so long as I can read what the others say, it shouldn't cause much of a fuss. Some people don't have English as their first language, and some others may not have actually gotten a university degree in Language. Some may just type so fast that they switch letters or mess up on the keyboard, and some may just like to peev you off.
Also, some may spell by saying the word. Try saying 'rogue.' It sounds a lot like the 'U' comes before the 'G,' doesn't it?

Sympathy before Apathy.

Spam also applies to this. It's about everything that is unwantedly repeated, such as... the spelling of rouge/rogue/dief/thief/whatever. This is a D&D forum, we know that there's no-one going to talk about the color RED on this forum by calling it rouge. If they want to talk about the colour, they'll call it red.

Get the term right, please. Seriously, though, I'm not berating you, it's just that threads like this really don't serve much purpose. The fact that I'm prolonging it's death throes is, perhaps, hypocritical, but que serra serrai. (That's only probably right.) I appologise profusely to the community for raising this clearly trivial matter. I humbly tender my appologies also for wasting valuable board-time people have spent reading this. Clearly the bad puns about rouge are not irritating anybody but me, and the fact that half the people here cannot even copy the word 'rogue' from the umpteen D&D rule books correctly cannot possibly detract from their ability to read said books carefully, as you are all quite clearly absolute masters of all you survay in that regard.

I shall bow out of this thread of SPAM now and not breath another word, so that it may die the death it so truly deserves.

For someone who complained about another person's spelling, you need to invest in a spell-checker of your own, just judging from your last post (quoted above)... I mean, you know what they say about people and glass houses...

I'm no grammar nazi... but there's a difference between making a mistake once, and making it constantly.

That said, some words like "Camouflage" confuse me immensely... I honestly don't know whether that spelling, or "camoflague" is correct. I suspect the former, but still...

But come on, "Rogue"? It's five letters... admittedly, it's not pronounced how you spell it, but a basic knowledge of French is all you need.

You all do know basic French, right?

Actually, it's not a mystery. It's a loaf of spiced ham, made primarily of the parts that don't fit easily in other categories (ankle meat, excess bacon-ey area, etc.) and contains no 'mystery' at all.

If you go to Minnesota there's a museum dedicated to it. There's also an annual festival every summer in Austin, Texas.

Careful ProfWhy, people can report you for less :shifty: :shifty:

I too find the incorrect spelling of rogue disturbing not only for its frequency but also for the fact that it is plainly spelled out in a ton of D&D books.

Also, if english is your second language I recommend putting your native country in your location area. That way if anyone corrects your spelling to an irritating degree you can tell them english isn't your first language and they shall feel sheepish.

However, I find a lot of the ridiculously awful spelling and/or grammar posts on these and other boards are perpetrated by those who do have english as their first language. Unfortunately these are not always 10 year olds either.

Bottom line is, one or two mistakes in spelling or grammar warrants no attention.
Misspelling rogue warrants a quick comment at the end of your otherwise helpful post.
Close to unreadable grammar and/or spelling warrants a serious comment along with a helpful reply.
Completely unreadable grammar and/or spelling to the extent that you cannot figure out the question, you should perhaps post asking what they're talking about. Which should be enough of a comment on their spelling and/or grammar to not have to elaborate on how awful it is.

But that's just my system of course.

Agreed. I shouldn't have to whip out a cipher to read someone's post. We aren't in a lightning fast chat here, it's a bloody forum. It isn't hard to take an extra 5 seconds to proofread and spell out whole words like "you", and figure out the correct form of their/they're/there. And if english isn't your second language, guess what! You should either be fluent enough to where we can't tell, or posting on a french (or whatever language) forum. And if you find a typo in your post, use the damn edit button. It's there for a reason.

For the love of God, spell check exists for a reason. Grammar exists for a reason. Just use spell check, ignore those words that it picks as "misspelled" (or is it "mispelled?") that are from fantasy or rules (such as "Drizz't" or "AC"), and correct accordingly. With grammar, at least make an attempt at correctly punctuating, don't give us a post that is made up entirely of one run-on sentence! Capitalize letters at the beginning of sentences and at the beginning of proper names (and only capitalize "God" when referring to Jehovah!!).

The purpose of punctuation is so that sentences are separated from each other in a logical and easily readable manner. One of the main requirements for a civilization is that it has a written language (not necessarily a unique writing system). Civilizations are measured by their writing, for example, ancient Egypt by their heiroglyphics, ancient Greece by their theatre (I prefer the old spelling), and ancient Rome by their political works. How would posterity measure us, by the rubbish we spew forth on the Internet? God, I hope not.

[EDIT] Oh, silly me, I didn't notice that there is no spell check on here. My bad.

Old English is dead as a spoken language. Modern English is not, thus Colour is still the valid spelling.

That depends on your definition of "Get", now doesn't it...

If by "get" you mean "get a reply", then yes.

If by "get" you mena "get someone annoyed", then I see no evidence of success.

The complaint that started this tangent is not only unsound, but invalid as well.

Saying rouge instead of rogue is not the same as saying colour instead of color.

"Colour" is correct in some countries. "Rouge" is not, nor has it ever been.

What I think people fail to realise is how petty all this sounds the colour/color converstaion proves it. Some peeps get petty (is that how you spell it) when it comes to something as small as spelling. As stated earlier I am DYSLEXIC and have on many occassions spelt rouge and rogue my group laugh it off and say will I play any other kind of colour/color next week? They don't get upset with people for typing errors especially when they may have what is now classified as a special need.

Of course if some of you wish to insult me or others who have difficulty with spelling because you are soooo perfect that is fine I'm big enough to understand how small you are!

OK so how do you spell colour/color? There are spelling differences depending where you come from as well maybe we should pick on those people as well.

COLOR is pretty much only used in the USA. COLOUR is British/UK English and is used in many european countries as well as Canada.

However, since US media has permeated the world, the spelling of "color" has begun to take precedence in people's minds.

Also, since you bring up dyslexia: shouldn't people spell words correctly so that those who are dyslexic can know the proper spelling if they choose to look it up? Or shall we give you the right of way only because you can't be bothered?

Spelling something wrong by accident is one thing, but laziness is another matter entirely. Since you are dyslexic, people should give you more leeway in your spelling, yes, but only if you are honestly trying.

DorsetDas, I can see that you are trying, so that's really cool.

Nah dont HAVE to get it right. It wont cost me anything for not spelling anything wrong. Even in my job I have spelt things wrong and its an aid as it makes the kids realise you are human.

Am a teacher and find it very hard to teach with my problem but do my best gives me a better understanding of how people find it hard and rather than flame em I help them.

Problem with this post is a few people seem to get upset if someone spells rouge instead of rogue. Not sure who dies when this is written but have to say if someone has a prob and is trying to not make mistakes the helpful words in these posts might put them of or insult them. Some people are trying to do their best and if its not good enough for anyones standards thats a shame but a free world and on this forum I understand if rouge goes down they mean rogue so I won't get upset. Just like I won't get upset with people who come up with stupid ideas or questions in the forum which could be sorted if they just read the rulebooks and think. And there are a lot more of those, spelling mistakes and all.
