I really want to play a person that is a guru with items like, alchemists fire, and acid flasks.
Im either going to play a dwarf or gnome.
And i dont really want to be a caster even though i have to be to create items.
I know you guys can help out. Thanks.

cant help to much srry but i thought u may want to be a halfling as far as abilities go since it's close(...kinda) and u get bonuses to throwing stuff and that would help especially if u want alchemists fire and tanglefoot stuff

You might want to try artificer. Also, get the grenadier feat from PHB II.

so im kinda stuck because i dont have the ebberon books

what if i ask my DM if you can take an item creation at the level it says for being a caster.
Would this be way to overpowering.

Actually, this shouldn't be too difficult. You don't have to be a caster to create the items you mention (alchemist's fire, acid flasks, and the like).

What I'd suggest you do is play a Rogue. Max out your ranks in Craft [alchemy] and other related skills. Perhaps your character could make a living as a pharmacist, in which case you'd also want to max out in Heal and such. You may also want to consider maxing Appraise and Diplomacy, for buying ingredients and possibly making a tidy profit selling some of your wares. Feats like Skill Focus [Craft [alchemy]] should also help. See if your DM will let you take an exotic weapon proficiency in grenadelike weapons.

Dont you have to be a spell caster to be able to craft alchemy.

No.

So you want to be an enlightened chemist/pyromaniac ... ok ... fine ...

Actually, RAW says that you do:

To make an item using Craft (alchemy), you must have alchemical equipment and be a spellcaster.

That said, I feel that removing that restriction may not be a game-breaking houserule (I haven't tried it though). I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that you can actually get sneak attack damage with grenade-like weapons, I'm not certain on that so don't quote me on it but if that is the case some levels in rogue might be an investment

How about spellthief. Good skill points and spellcasting. I haven't actually done alot of research, but I think some Master Thrower could make things interesting.

I dont really want to be a spell theif. Would it be too unbalancing to ask my dm to say that i dont have to be a magic user to craft alchemy and that grenade like weapons do get sneak attack.

Well my Dm gave my character alchemy without being a spellcaster (my character is a kalashtar monk, dm designed) without upsetting game balance. Grenade-like weapons DO NOT sneak attack - sneak attack requires precision, something not noted in grenade like weapons.

Actually, since you make attack rolls with acid flasks, and can crit with them, you can also sneak attack with them, by the rules.

As to whether this makes sense, well: acid flask to the face > acid flask to the leg.

Another option would be to take just one level of sorcerer. This fulfills the requirement that you be a spellcaster without being too disruptive to your overall plan. Furthermore, since sorcerers aren't trained flavor-wise, you can write it off as just a tiny amount of latent ability that you don't really care to use. A basic supernatural knack, if you will.
