| TheApokalypseShovel05-10-07, 03:41 PM | I'm playing as an evil Human Paragon3/Wiz2 who is just about to hit 6th level. For my feat I'm trying to decide between an intelligent item familiar(from Unearthed Arcana I believe) or an improved familiar. I don't really like the listed improved familiars, but I'm sure my DM would let me pick out a creature I like. If I do choose an item familiar, is it better to choose something like a weapon or something like a ring which isn't likely to be dropped or disarmed? |

Well, if you're choosing between Improved Familiar and an Item Familiar, that will depend on what you are looking for out of your companion. If you want a companion/scout (or melee combatant if you're going gish and take the CW's version of Improved Familiar), or if you want to create some interesting roleplay opportunities, go with an Improved Familiar. If you'd rather bolster your own power, Item Familiar is probably more up your alley. If you go with an Item Familiar, an item like a ring, amulet, or bracers would be the most convenient choice. With those kind of items, you're not likely to accidentally drop or forget to bring it with you, be without it while sleeping, or have it the target of a sunder or disarm attempt. A ring would be especially well guarded if you wear a (spiked) gauntlet over top of it. |
