| pukunui12-08-06, 05:00 AM | Hey, I was wondering ... using what's available in the SRD only (so: core, psionics, unearthed arcana), what would be the best way to make a Jedi type character? I'm surprised that there aren't more threads about this. It seems like it would be a popular choice. I'm thinking a psion (telepath) might be the best. I'm more into the whole "These aren't the droids ... ahem, I mean constructs ... you're looking for" thing than making a "lightsaber" or anything like that. To that end, it seems to me like psionic suggestion is more fitting in terms of flavor than the regular arcane suggestion with its material component, although the psionic version's auditory display isn't exactly right either. :( I've read elsewhere that the psychic warrior is the best, but while they have a better BAB and more bonus feats, they can't get access to psionic suggestion. Feel free to recommend a non-psionic build (keeping in mind SRD only). Just curious to know what other people think. Cheers. |

Use Inertial armor for AC since Jedi wear little armor (except in the past when they wore Battle armor). |
| Arturius112-08-06, 12:58 PM | You could use the Star Wars d20 book. It's got jedi guardians and consulars. |
| pukunui12-08-06, 03:12 PM | the psywar has many feats. use 1 of them to take Expanded Knowledge (Suggestion, Psionic). Cool. I didn't realize psychic warriors could use Expanded Knowledge. For some reason, I thought it was just for psions who wanted access to a power on a banned discipline list. However, I'd have to be an 8th level psychic warrior before I could use it to get psionic suggestion, whereas as a psion (telepath), I'd only have to be 3rd level. Coincidentally enough, there is a CO thread on this matter right now. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=750332 Yes, I had a look at that thread before posting here. Unfortunately, it has devolved into an argument about how to make a lightsaber in d&d - and, as I stated in my original post, I'm not really interested in d&d lightsabers. I want the whole Jedi Mind Tricks thing. It sounds like psychic warrior with the Expanded Knowledge feat to get psionic suggestion should work well. However, as I said -- that wouldn't be possible until level 8, whereas a straight psion (telepath) can get psionic suggestion at level 3 ... sigh. What about taking 3 levels of psion then 17 levels of psychic warrior? |
| serow_#R12-09-06, 09:39 AM | it might work, but then again you'd be diluting both Psion and Psywar manifesting levels. you won't be able to affect more than one person, since the manifester level cap for Suggestion would then be keyed to the Psion instead of Psywar. |
| FeceMan12-09-06, 11:36 AM | I have a list of suggested powers. Pick from those as a psywar. |
| someonelse81212-09-06, 01:51 PM | I use Jedis in my campaign world as a divine class, somewhere in between monk, cleric and paladin. here are my notes on it, tell me what you think. some of whats used here are house rules. Alterations to the Jedi Classes from the Star Wars Core Rulebook. A Jedi does not sleep, they meditate; they can eventually learn to stay fully aware while they meditate, but not at first level. When the Jedi progression says they get a bonus feat these feats may be selected from the list of fighter bonus feats or they may choose any Jedi feat except for the Force Training feats. They do not gain proficiency with the blaster, only the lightsaber and simple weapons. Jedi gain Vitality as a bonus feat even if they do not meet the prerequisites. A Jedi has the same armor restrictions as a monk; their proficiency with the lightsaber is dependant upon their mobility. A Jedi who doesn’t use a lightsaber has no reason not to wear armor, but they are not proficient with any type of armor. With the deflect ability a jedi can defend against and redirect certain types of energy such as plasma (blaster bolts), electricity and certain magic attacks like force missiles. As long as the energy is not greater than the lightsaber (meaning that the potential damage of the energy is less than the potential damage from the lightsaber.) They can use this ability with other weapons, but only the lightsaber can redirect energy attacks. Most other weapons that are used for deflecting an energy attack are destroyed in the process, unless it is magical, if masterwork it will not be destroyed if the total potential damage of the weapon is more than the potential damage of the energy attack. There is no light or dark side. Ignore anything that refers to this. Force Points and action points are the same except that one of the Jedi’s class abilities is to take full advantage of them. A Jedi’s limit of action points per round is equal to half their Jedi level, so at level 4 they can use two per round, at level 6 they can use 3, ect. With every jedi level you get 5 + half you’re jedi levels. A level 1 jedi gets 5, at level 2 he gets 6, Lv3 also gets 6 but level 4 gets 7 action points. A jedi gains additional Vitality points at each level as according to the rulebook but a Jedi’s hit dice is a d3. Deflecting a magic missile: even though there is no save DC for a magic missile calculate the save DC anyway, then add the size modifier for being Fine (+8), so the average DC would be 13 +8 = 21. The Jedi must roll an attack against AC21 to hit the magic missile, with the deflect attack option the jedi would then have to roll an additional attack roll to redirect the magic missile at a target. The magic missile’s range is the maximum amount it can travel, once it has reached its limit it disappears. Drain Energy: in addition to what is listed, you can also use this power on living creatures. You must be touching the creature to do this, and since it requires a full round action you must be grappling. This power inflicts pain upon the victim so it is not something that can be done with a simple touch. The Jedi can drain one of their victim’s ability scores by 1d3 per round, with each round that he does this he gains one Vitality hit point. The Jedi must announce which ability he wants to drain. He rolls his Energy Drain check to determine the Fortitude DC made by the victim. A successful save prevents the Jedi from draining any energy. If a Jedi tries this on another Jedi and fails, the victim can, as a free action reverse the energy drain and require the attacker to take a fortitude save. Force Grip: While someone is gripped they are effectively stunned, each round on their turn, as a standard action they can take another will save; the Jedi must then reroll his Force Grip check. Each round the ability is used costs Vitality Points. Force Stealth can also be used to hide from Scrying. Heal Another cannot be used to heal vitality points, only hit points. See Force can also be used to detect psionics and magic, additional skills similar to this are Detect Alignment and Detect Secret Doors. These each requires the Sense feat. The Force Training feats (Alter, Control and Sense) can only be taken at levels 1, 3 and 4. These feats cannot be gained any other way. You cannot use your bonus feats to gain these, nor can you choose from any other feats with your force training. New feats: Vitality: Based on the alternate hit point system of the star wars role-playing game. Prerequisites: Con15, Endurance, Die Hard and one of the following; Self-Sufficient, Toughness or Great Fortitude. Benefit: you gain a number of vitality points equal to 1/3 of your total hit points (round down). Vitality points cannot be healed by any means other than a full night of rest. When you take damage you lose vitality points before hit points. A critical hit will instantly drain all your vitality points and then deal the critical damage to your hit points. For example, you have 12 hit points and 4 vitality points, an enemy hits you with a critical for a total of 8 points of damage. Your vitality points are immediately drained to 0 and you take the full damage leaving you with 4 hit points. However if you are hit for 8 points of damage that’s not critical you lose your 4 vitality points and your hit points are only taken down to 8. (Of course no one with this feat would be dealing in such small numbers, it’s just an example) Normal: normally you don’t have vitality points. Special: A fighter or monk may select this as a bonus feat as long as they meet the prerequisites; also a Dwarf with Con18 can take this feat without meeting the other prerequisites. Lightsaber rules: It requires 10 ranks in craft to create a lightsaber, having less than 10 does nothing for you, any attempt to create one will fail (possibly explode). You need a gem worth at least 1,000 PP (10,000 GP) (the color of the gem will determine the color of the blade), 2,000 GP worth of material components and a small power cell like those used for energy weapons. The craft DC is 30. A lightsaber is a light weapon, wielding a lightsaber uses Dexterity rather than strength, if you don’t have weapon finesse you do not gain any ability bonus to your attacks. Jedi, Ninjas, Monks and Samurai are automatically proficient with the lightsaber. All lightsabers are masterwork weapons. A lightsaber’s critical range is 19-20x3; its botch range is 1-2x3. A lightsaber deals 2d8 points of slashing or piercing energy (plasma) damage. If you are not proficient with the lightsaber rolling a 1 is an automatic fumble. If you are proficient rolling a 20 is an automatic critical, rolling a 19 still requires crit confirmation. A lightsaber cannot cut adamantine quickly, although it does defeat the damage reduction. Think of the scene at the beginning of episode one when they start cutting through the door with their lightsabers, that door was solid adamantine. |

| GaffeR12-09-06, 03:33 PM | If you want a Telepath, Ranger 1/Telepath 6/Slayer 9/Sanctified Mind 5 works |
| pukunui12-09-06, 03:43 PM | If you want a Telepath, Ranger 1/Telepath 6/Slayer 9/Sanctified Mind 5 works Why the 1 level of ranger? Also, "Slayer" and "Sanctified Mind" aren't in the SRD, so no go with them. |
| EscherEnigma12-09-06, 03:49 PM | Slayer is. From the hypertext SRD: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/slayer.htm It's one of the psionic prestige classes. In the wizards SRD files, it's near the end of the psionic class file (with the other prestige classes) But you're right, sanctified mind is from Complete Psionic. But Telepath to Slayer... that would work rather well, I think. |
| pukunui12-09-06, 03:52 PM | So it is. Thanks for pointing that out, Escher. Is the Slayer some sort of psionic ranger? Just curious ... it's got the favored enemy. |
| GaffeR12-09-06, 03:55 PM | So it is. Thanks for pointing that out, Escher. Is the Slayer some sort of psionic ranger? Just curious ... it's got the favored enemy. Sorta. Like a psi-ranger-eldritch knight. It's Illithid Slayer in the XPH, but no OGL for Illithid. Ranger 1/Fighter 1/Telepath 4/Slayer 10 would get you 16 levels... 4 more levels of telepath afterwards would get you BAB 16 and ML 17 at 20th level. Feel free to put fighter in wherever you like for the feat. Ranger is in there for free Track. |
| pukunui12-09-06, 04:04 PM | Yeah, I was wondering about that ... the SRD talks about "a creature" extracting and eating a Slayer's brain. Kinda obvious what sort of creature that is, even if they can't say it in the SRD. LOL. I'm not sure about the Slayer though. It seems too geared towards combating one type of creature ... sure you get +1 manifesting for 9 levels with 10 levels of full BAB but you also get a whole lot of stuff that's only useful against mindflayers. In order for ranger 1/fighter 1/telepath 4/slayer 10 to work without multiclass penalties, I'd have to be either human or elan for race. Neither race is really interesting to me (one because I am human and so like playing something else, and the other because it's just weird ...). But thanks for the suggestions anyway! I appreciate all the feedback I've received so far. Keep it coming please. |

Add on to that +4 saves vs compulsions/mind affecting, followed by complete IMMUNITY to mind affecting effects. Let's not forget -1 SR/PR to your enemy on each swing, and immunity to Scrying. There's some anti-illithid stuff in there, but there's a lot of other stuff too. I had a look at it again, and there aren't as many mindflayer-focused abilities as I thought at first glance. There's really only 3 - favored enemy (although you could choose a different one, the most obvious choice is mindflayer), the making your brain taste bad to 'flayers thing, and the resistance to mind blasts ... So yeah, Slayer could work well. Thanks. Also, I can't believe that I forgot about half-elves. Unlike most other people on these boards, I actually like playing them! Half-elves, halflings, aasimars, tieflings, and air genasi are my favorite races. |
| EscherEnigma12-09-06, 04:40 PM | Also about slayer is that if you're willing to spend one of your feats on track (and a skill point or two in survival), you can get in with a simple Psion 8. Sure, you don't get in terribly FAST, but you take a smaller hit to manifester levels. Personaly, I'd rather be only one level behind in manifester (at the same place as Wilders and Sorcs) then two (being a full power level all the time), and personally, I don't think the benefits from 1 level of ranger when you hae so many non-ranger are going to matter as much. But to each their own. |
| pukunui12-09-06, 05:02 PM | Yes ... although it seems to me like the Slayer is very much a "hunter". That doesn't really fit with the Jedi flavor, especially the Jedi Mind Tricks aspect, which is what I'm most interested in. It seems to me like I'd be best off just going straight psion (telepath) for 20 levels. Or maybe psychic warrior for 20 levels with the Expanded Knowledge feat. Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! |
| EscherEnigma12-09-06, 05:18 PM | Just off the top of my head... A completly non-psionic possibility may be bard. They can cast suggestion as a second level bard spell, and they can use it with their bard song, also they get a few good melee profencies and can wear light armor. If you choose their spells carefully you can imitate many of the typical 'jedi' abilities, including healing, illusions, mind tricks, and if you also have the Spell Compendium some of the nature tricks and move abilities. To make it more like the force and less like spells, eschew materials, disguise spell, and a few others may help. Not sure if it's a stronger option or not, but I think you could pull off playing a bard as a Jedi. Oh yeah, and bard song could totally be your 'battle meditation.' |
| pukunui12-09-06, 05:29 PM | Yes, I think that someone on the CO board suggested that. I think bard is certainly the best option for a core-only Jedi type. But considering that my mom is getting me the Expanded Psionics Handbook for Christmas (she told me because she wanted to make sure she'd gotten the right one ...), I wanted to explore psionic possibilities as well. I think psionic powers fit better with the Jedi flavor than arcane spells, although using silent spell, still spell, and eschew materials on the arcane suggestion could work (although you'd have to be pretty high level to pull it off, eh?). Does psionics have the equivalent of the silent spell metamagic feat? The whole "auditory display" of a swelling noise that goes along with psionic suggestion doesn't fit with the Jedi Mind Tricks either. |
| FeceMan12-09-06, 07:19 PM | May I please see your list? It's in the thread. |

| Bester12-10-06, 01:07 PM | I'd go with a monk, psion (kineticist), soulknife build. Take your monk levels first unless your GM allows monks to multiclass freely, then alternate psion and soulknife. Vow of Poverty (BoED, not SRD) would complete the character. My optimal 20-level build for this would be a human Monk4/Kineticist5/Soulknife11. You lose one BAB from the fifth level of psion, but you get more power points, a bonus psionic feat, and third-level powers in exchange. As long as you keep your lower two classes within one level of each other, you'll never suffer multiclass XP penalties. |
| pukunui12-10-06, 02:13 PM | powers are already silenced, as in you don't need verbal components. the audio display can be suppressed with a concentration check. Really? That's awesome. I must have missed that. Psionic suggestion is definitely the way to go in order to achieve the "These aren't the droids you're looking for" effect. As long as you keep your lower two classes within one level of each other, you'll never suffer multiclass XP penalties. How do you keep levels within one level when you can't freely multi-class with the Monk class (with the races the OP likes...only with Human you can)? You would have to go Monk for 4 levels before taking Kineticist & Soulknife. I have looked into a Monk/Telepath for a Jedi-like character and to get certain abilities from the Monk I have to go full Monk for 3 levels...I think the Still Mind ability would go great with a Jedi. You're best bet is to accept a human PC if you want to multi-class to get what you want from certain classes. Or just go straight PsiWarrior or Telepath. One last suggest (I think might be the best)...the Ardent from the Complete Psionic. The Ardent has the BAB of a PsiWarrior and the PP of a Psion. It's a win win situation. Plus, with the Communication Mantle you get Psionic Suggestion at 3rd level. |

| pukunui12-11-06, 02:38 PM | so um....I dont know if you noticed or not but I posted in this thread. it was a big one too. is everyone just ignoring me or am I really that uninteresting? Yes, you did, and I apologize for not responding to you. For me, at least, it wasn't that your post was uninteresting ... it just wasn't all that useful. I specifically asked for suggestions using only the d&d 3.5 core rules and whatever else is OGL (such as psionics and unearthed arcana). A Jedi class adapted for d&d from the Star Wars d20 book doesn't fit my requirements. Sorry. Thank you anyway for posting it, though. I do appreciate that you took the time to write it all out for us. Perhaps someone else (aside from you, that is ;)) will find it to be more relevant that I did. Cheers. |
| pukunui12-11-06, 04:30 PM | I have to say - the Ardent from Complete Psionic is looking pretty good so far. The flavor fits well (all that talk about transcending deities and seeking universal truths and what-have-you. It's very Taoist ... er, I mean, Force-ist ...). Communication and Force are prefect for primary mantles. Possible secondary mantles: Freedom, Guardian, Justice, Mental, and Repose. The 3/4 BAB and full-psion manifesting are good too. :-) Now, as I've said before, I'm not that fussed about a "lightsaber" ... but just out of curiosity, would it be possible to come up with something lightsaber-ish using only Simple weapons (since the Ardent only has Simple Weapon Proficiency ...)? I'll have to make an exception to the SRD-only thing seeing as the Ardent isn't OGL. |
| bielmic12-12-06, 02:07 AM | i thought about that in the past and also only wanted to used core books to develop a jedi-like character. what i came up with was a combo bard/monk. yeah, i know the alignments are mutually exclusive so you'll have to advance in one then switch over until you get the prestige class you're interested in. as for prestige classes, the enlightened fist (monk/sorc combo in complete arcane) and the prestige class in the DMG that grants full spellcasting and BAB work also (i can't recall the name at this time). |
| dnddreamer12-13-06, 11:08 AM | Now, as I've said before, I'm not that fussed about a "lightsaber" ... but just out of curiosity, would it be possible to come up with something lightsaber-ish using only Simple weapons (since the Ardent only has Simple Weapon Proficiency ...)? My suggestion would be to take a level in Soulknife or what until higher levels when you can purchase a Brilliant Energy Quarterstaff +1 (50,000gp)...good luck on that last one. Let me give some other advise on the Ardent...after 1st level take three levels of Human Paragon (that is only if you take Human as your race). Those three levels of Human Paragon will give you: *+2 Manifestor levels on your Ardent class *1 Martial Weapon Proficiency *Your choose of 10 skills to make class skills for those three levels -- great way to fine-tune your PC's skills to meet what you want as a background for your character *1 Adaptive Learning -- Choose one skill to be a class skill in all your classes *a bonus feat *Fort +0/Reflex+0/Will+3 *BAB +2 * and most importantly a +2 to any ability score Try it...I think you'll be rather impressed. |
| pukunui12-13-06, 05:37 PM | Thanks, dreamer. I'll look into it. New question: would it be viable to have a mute psionic character who just communicates telepathically all the time? Or would that eat up too many power points? |

| pukunui12-13-06, 10:03 PM | Adapt the mindbender to psionics. Interesting. Not exactly the flavor I'm going for though ... What else grants telepathy at will (aside from being a ghostwise halfling)? |
| FeceMan12-14-06, 02:02 AM | Interesting. Not exactly the flavor I'm going for though ... What else grants telepathy at will (aside from being a ghostwise halfling)? | pukunui12-14-06, 02:09 AM | What's wrong with that for flavor? It would be fine for a "Dark Side of the Force" type of thing, but that wasn't what I was after. I don't like the whole "domination" aspect -- the permanent thrall at 10th level and such. The following mantles are good for Jedi: Time Knowledge Justice Force Fate Energy Deception Corruption and Madness I think Communication and Force are the best for the primary mantles, with possible secondary mantles being: Freedom, Guardian, Justice, Mental, and Repose. What do you think? |
| Newpaintbrush12-14-06, 02:23 AM | Hey, I was wondering ... using what's available in the SRD only (so: core, psionics, unearthed arcana), what would be the best way to make a Jedi type character? I'm surprised that there aren't more threads about this. I know you just want to go SRD. But if you're asking why there aren't more threads about this - most people that want to play Jedi type characters actually PLAY Jedi; they go out and get the d20 Star Wars system. That is also what I would recommend. I know you have some reason for using SRD only, but I recommend that you at least stop by your local gaming store or bookstore and check out the Star Wars system. |

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have no interest in playing the Star Wars roleplaying game whatsoever. Don't get me wrong -- I love the original Episodes IV-VI, but I'm not a Star Wars fanboy. I've never been interested in having anything to do with it other than enjoying the story as told in the original trilogy. What I'm looking for is a Jedi-like build -- emphasis on "like". As I've said before, I'm really only interested in the "Jedi Mind Tricks" aspect. I'd love for my character to be able to wave his/her hand and say "These aren't the droids you're looking for" and have the enemy respond with "These aren't the droids we're looking for." That sort of thing. My reasons for SRD only are: a) I wanted to keep it simple, and b) I only own the 3 core rulebooks plus PHB2, DMG2, and Spell Compendium. Cheers. |
| FeceMan12-16-06, 02:05 PM | It would be fine for a "Dark Side of the Force" type of thing, but that wasn't what I was after. I don't like the whole "domination" aspect -- the permanent thrall at 10th level and such. I think Communication and Force are the best for the primary mantles, with possible secondary mantles being: Freedom, Guardian, Justice, Mental, and Repose. What do you think? Oh, no, you just take a one-level dip into mindbender for the telepathy. I'm not sure about the mantles; I'll have to review CPsionic. |
| High Octane12-16-06, 03:26 PM | Hey, I was wondering ... using what's available in the SRD only (so: core, psionics, unearthed arcana), what would be the best way to make a Jedi type character? Samurai. |

| UndeadMouse12-16-06, 06:40 PM | i would suggest monk/psion(psychokenesis or telepath), maxing monk at 5th or 7th level, then going to psion since it gives a good spread of what is shown in the movies. also, just looking through the star wars rulebooks without buying them (borders usually has one or two of them in stock) you can get a better idea of what you need. |

I hate monks, but thanks anyway. There are only two hobby shops here in Auckland that sell d&d books and both are downtown and kind of a pain to get to ... sigh! |
| Onikani12-17-06, 10:44 AM | ninja/psion (take your pick which). Easy. Psion then, since ninja's not in the SRD. Sorry for the confusion, i meant you multiclass between ninja and psion and you pick which flavor of psion you use. If you don't like the ninja, than any lightly armored (non armored is better) dex type is preferred. I would NOT suggest monk since the flurry and other things seem way out of flavor. I would suggest: ninja, or swashbuckler, or thief, or ranger. Ninja always seemed the closest (lucas based jedi off of samurai and ninja - but the dnd samurai isn't even close to a jedi), swasbucklers are decent since they have finesse and some decent rogueish abilities. Thieves and rangers are the core dex fighters. And i don't care what anybody says, a lightsabre is a finesse weapon. :D |
| Archmage Atrus12-17-06, 02:21 PM | Side note, since I'm not sure if anyone's actually said it by now. But you *are* aware that the Jedi suggestion ability has an Audio component to it? "These aren't the droids you're looking for" - do you think he's, what, narrating this to the audience? It's not like people without Psicraft can tell what the heck's going on anyhow. Just play your Psion Jedi-wannabe and move along, move along. |

Just play your Psion Jedi-wannabe and move along, move along. Fair enough, but the XPH describes the Auditory display as a "bass-pitched hum" that grows into a "shout strident enough to be heard within 100 feet" [or only within 15 feet at the manifester's option]. Imagine trying to say "these aren't the droids you're looking for" while this weird hum gets louder and louder all around you. That doesn't fit with the Jedi flavor at all. In fact, I don't really like the whole "Display" aspect of psionics in the first place, but that's a topic for a whole other thread. Cheers. |
| pukunui12-26-06, 04:37 PM | I just had a thought - what about a gestalt soulknife/telepath? You get decent fighting capability, a "lightsaber", and stuff like psionic suggestion. |
