This isn't really asking for advice so much as a sympathy plea...

Been playing a nordic campaign for 2 months now. I'm a barbarian going bear warrior, am currently level 4, almost 5. I have not yet gotten a single critical hit,
(Greatsword, now +1 Greatsword of giant's bane), though I generally roll about 2 nat 1's a session. In addition, my DM has a fumble chart for nat 1's, allowing us to hit an AC of somekind or something bad happens (attack opp, damaged weapon, dropped, etc.)

I know I'm just belly aching. This kind of thing happen to anyone else?

At least you haven't got a record in your group for the most 1's rolled in a four hour period. I rolled 11 1's, and my DM has a fumble chart. This chart can kill you (crit self or ally, fort save or die), stun you, knock you unconscious, oh and my least favorite, knock you out and auromatically break your weapon, and it gives no save. So believe me your doing okie dokie compared to me. :weep: My dice hate me deeply.

All the time!! I lost one of my favorite characters to nat 1's. But a little white touch up paint fixed that! Shhhhhh...noone else knows that my d20 is rockin' 2 11's.

eez, that is bad, but i've got the record for fastest killed and most dead characters, lasted all of 5 min (thats what i get for being undead the DM says ), campaign hadn't even started!!, I've got a huge stack of dead characters, and it all stems back to my first game:
playing Rifts, my first RPG combat situation, first attack EVER

i rolled a one and jammd my #$%^ing gun!! its haunted me to this day

one time almost lost a barbarian to a 20 ft cliff, i put lots of skill points into climb now

so dont feel bad, we've all been there, again and again and again and ......

No criticals huh....
no problemo, it will come, one day not far away, you will kill all monsters with 10 criticals in a row.
This can happen to any normal player, dont worrie my young padawan.!

You want bad luck?

Back in 2nd edition, me and a couple buddies were playing in an adventure that revolved around the party paladin. I forget the specifics, but he was the main guy. Keep in mind, we just jumped into this adventure, so we rolled up new higher level characters for it. *First* combat, *first* round, I roll a natural 1 with my sword. My DM is one of those people who get perverse enjoyment out of natural 1's, so I rolled on his chart. My attack was so bad I actually endangered the paladin who was standing next to me. So I rolled to hit his AC. Not only did I hit, I hit with a critical...with my vorpal sword.

We still joke about that when we game.

My current DM is awesome, except for one detail that him and I have gotten into arguments over: The FUMBLE!! (1)

Reason:

If you roll a natural 20, you have the CHANCE to crit...you must "verify" that, otherwise you have only hit.

If you roll a natural 1, you HAVE fumbled...no chance to save against it. It's been proven, statistically, that a high level fighter with 4 rolls per attack will roll more 1's than a first level wizard...so in the worst case scenerio: A 20th level fighter comes across a 1st level wizard and decides to attack...oops, rolls a 1, drops sword or falls or trips or {insert}...the wizard rolls a natural 20 and hits him...??? (granted, this is really far fetched, just ranting about it).

But my point is this: Your own team-mate, 20th level paladin rolls a 1 with his vorpal sword...you, a 20th level {insert PC}, standing next to him, could lose your head!!

Please rant away...I'm with you on this one!!

BTW: My DM did bring in a friend to co-dm the battles...and he agreed with me!! The main DM wasn't happy about it...but he's accepted it. If we roll a 1, we can roll with our dex bonus to "save" the fumble...he will give us a number, because it changes per situation, but at least we have a chance. The fighters save with the BAB plus dex bonus, because you're supposed to be an "expert" with weapons.

Personally, I've been very fortunate not to roll many 1's in my 20+ years of playing...about 7 months ago, the fellow rogue/fighter/chain master rolled 7 ones in a ROW!! He wrapped his chain around 3 trees, threw it across the room twice, wrapped it around himself once and the last one I had to roll a reflex saving throw to prevent me from getting hit...and I was behind him.

We did away with the fumble table long ago. And now you have to miss again to fumble.

Ever since the Dice in the Vice incident.

You see, one player fumbled critically and got SOOOOOOOOOOO mad at his 20-sided that rather than just exchanging it or chucking it across the room like a normal person, he jumped up and ran into the garage, slapped the die in the vice and turned.

And turned
and turned.

And KABOOM!

It didn't flatten, it shattered, spraying us with d20 shrapnel. Luckily we both made our saves (which, back then, was probably vs Breath Weapon) and took no damage.

Never again did we use the table.

Woah. I'll have to try and see myself if a d20 will shatter when you put it in a vice. Hee hee hee..

Chucking it across the room is bad. We have a couple of fist-sized (well, a small lady's fist, but anyway) d20s. They do at least 1d4 damage on hit. And windows don't have a lot of hp.
