Well, what do you need help with? From what I'm gathering you read the whole book and you have no clue what anyone of it means, and that means I can't help you.

Okay. First off, the Basic Set?

Pitch it. The miniatures in it are worth something like three times the box price, but from the 3rd edition review, it's clear that whoever made it was an idiot. Find a real DM. Find a group of gamers, and ask them to take you in.

Beyond that:
(1) roll your ability scores
(2) pick a race
(3) pick a class
(4) pick a feat (plus a bonus feat if you're a fighter or a human)

Fill out all of the above on your sheet.

(5) add a description
(6) equip your character

Comment: the basic game is a rather good introduction if you have someone who already knows how to play as the DM. However, the rulebooks are not very well organised for the complete novice.

I learned as a complete novice, right from the ground up. It took much time, dedication, and hard work. But it can be done. Read over everything about 100 times. After that, read it another 1000 times. If it dosen't make sense then, well, read it again.
