Killing the Party Rogue [Archive] - Wizards Community

First off, before someone jumps on me for tearing apart the group through PvP combat, I just want to point out that the Rogue wants to re-roll characters, and two out of three of the other party members have reason to want him dealt with, one way or another.

Now, on to the situation:
The party started at level 3 and initially consisted of the following:
CG Air Genasi (base Elf) Ranger 2
TN Aasimar Cleric of Oghma 2
CG Rock Gnome Artificer of Gond 3 [Me]
CE Tiefling Rogue 2

The gnome proved to be popular and hence the tiefling's main angle, "I may be a jerk but you need me," fell flat when the gnome ended up being the one disarming all the traps. The character stalked off, a noisy scream was heard, and he was presumed dead.

By now we'd levelled up, with everyone sticking to their original paths.

HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!
NE Drow Rogue 1 / Fighter 1

Why the player did this, I don't know. He said he had a better RP character all planned out, but it hasn't showed up, and mechanically the drow is pretty poorly off due to missing 2 levels of BAB and HP (though with most of the other party members at LA+1, it's not as bad as it could be).

We found him on a torture rack (given the party's odd nature, it seems we were collected for some form of planar experimentation, as everyone has ankle bracelets on except the gnome). The genasi/elf, who's fairly experienced IC and also fairly tolerant, didn't kill him on sight. However, he's been keeping a *very* watchful eye on him.

Fast forward, the players found themselves in a featureless corridor that turned out to be the (illusioned) gullet of a magically-bred Purple Worm, via a doorway that teleported us inside it. We turned tail and bolted back out, but the gnome had to ditch his weapons and shield to make it in time, and he wandered off in search of replacement equipment (I wanted to swap out charactes).

Enter, me...round two: NE Drow (LA+1 Surfacer variant, no SLA/SR) Ftr 1 / Wiz 2 (Going for a gish build, currently wearing a Razored Breastplate and using a Ranseur).

This was actually my original character concept, I rolled the gnome last-minute out of a zany impulse, but eventually realized I really wanted to play the established character (he has a massive backstory and several plot points, all of which the DM knew about well in advance).

As far as the party knows, I'm a self-interested wood elf with average fighting skill, since I have a ring that provides an illusory disguise, and I'm not revealing that I can casts spells, yet (additional thread here (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=14524093#post14524093)) .

Now, we've just finished spending the night in a library after the incident linked above, where the drow rogue ignored the Cleric's situation. For backstory/common sense reasons, my character does NOT like having another drow following him around, as he's 99.9% certain any such individual is out to collect the bounty on his head. The Ranger took the first watch, during which the Rogue was awake. I had second watch, and in addition to "reconnoitering" the party's packs and gear to see what everyone was capable of, I'm thinking that when it comes time to wake them, the Rogue is gonna come first.

Since the player is once again switching out (planning on a CE Half-Elf Lycanthrope Malarite Barbarian), I thought I'd double check with him to make sure he has the character ready (he already knows the Ranger is out for his hide after some recent events).

Now my question is, what's the best way to go about this? I don't want to cast anything too flashy because it might wake the party and reveal that I am, in fact, a caster. I have a Ring of Charm Person 1/day, so right now the current thoughts are going through my head:

Tie Him Up
My Use Rope skill isn't trained but I may be able to take 20 depending on what the DM rules about waking him. I have Silk Rope in my pack.
The Good: He's helpless and I can Coup de Grace him if I need to
The Bad: Even if the Charm Person ring bypasses his SR and Will save (he gets a +2 vs Enchantments for being an Elf, and another +2 to Will vs Spells/SLA for being Drow, for a total +4. His class levels and Wisdom, fortunately, give him no bonus), it'll be hard to convince him I'm his friend if he's tied up.
The Ugly:I'd need a good excuse to kill him since the REST of the party won't want to wake up to find out the guy on watch likes to tie up and kill people. This could easily blow my good image with them.

Talk it Out
Wake the character, and use the ring on him immediately. If it comes to a fight, try to back him towards the Mimic we encountered earlier (bookshelf form, we let it live since it's not mobile and the CG Ranger agreed to leave it be if it released our Cleric and gave us the magic books it had shelved).
The Good: If anyone else wakes up and sees us talking, or even breaking into argument and fighting, they're more likely to believe and help me than the rogue.
The Bad: Again, gonna be rough getting past his SR and Will save. I may well end up in a straight fight, and his HP is nearly equal to mine (he rolled well, I didn't). His hit chance is also much, much higher than mine in melee--I'm probably gonna try to keep a five foot distance and disarm from reach with my Ranseur, which'd work well since he's using a light weapon vs my two-handed one and higher STR score.
The Ugly: If I win, I won't know what he's up to. I may have to use a spell and alert the party to my capabilities if the fight's going badly. If I lose, I'm dead (though if it goes bad I can yell for help and wake the others).

The Mimic
This one just occured to me. Similar to the "tie him up" plan, I can use Knockout Poison to keep him asleep, drag him to the Mimic and have it grapple him. Then it's wake-up-and-interrogate time.
The Good: Again, helpless
The Bad: Another +5 vs the Charm ring due to being in danger from the caster.
The Ugly: As before, the party probably won't like to wake up and see this, and the Mimic may kill him before I get anything useful out of him, depending how cooperative it is.

Any thoughts? I have Daze prepped, as well as Grease, True Strike, and Color Spray. I also have two Oils of Speed, a Potion of Spider Climb, and scrolls of Fireball and Scorching Ray at my disposal, though I hate to use too many of my few good consumables.

On a side note, I wonder if there's any way to get that Mimic as a familiar via Shrink Object... probably give a +2 to Disguise? :D

Why interogate? 99.9% sure he's after the bounty on your head is good enough for me. I like the mimic plan only ending in his death. Then plant some of the partys possesions on him so it looks like he's a thief and was making off with thier stuff. It sounds like he has knocked heads with some of the others so this turn of events will seem belivable to the group. You guys are better off with out him. The mimic did you a favor really, now how will you divide his gear?;)

Gotta love them drow

I'd like to interrogate him out of the simple philosophy that "knowledge is power" and if there's more danger coming my way, I want to know about it. :D

I'd say be nice to the rogue myself, even if that means having to tie the rogue up. Now if he misbehaves, then while he's tied up let the whole party use him as a party game when they wake up mad because someone woke them.

I do want to give him half a chance to do something, even if it's just to RP acting snooty. The character has really been in the back most of the game, largely because the player just fades into the background himself. I think it's partly why he keeps wanting to re-roll, he's hoping to find some sort of magic bullet...

So is he dead yet? Or still deciding if/how to do it? I play an evil underdark campaign and we sometimes kill eachother, but try to discourage it. We play like an evil mercenary company and inner-company killing is considered a waste of resources. Plus it just sucks to get blindsided by conspiring buddies and your fav pc die.

When it happens both players sometimes know it. Like when my drow fighter Graz was left alone with the half-fiend/drow rogue. He had few hit points and his constitution was close to 0 due to a scrap with abyssal ghouls I think. Any way my buddy sail he would probly kill Graz if the two were left alone and since I didn't really protest the thought... That half breed cast horrid wilting on poor Graz then she ate his brains and took her pick of his gear. All in good gaming. I only wonder the consistancy of horridly wilted brains. Crunchy?

I would imagine something more like raisins...

As to the rogue, he disintegrated. Being a planted mole can have disadvantages, the contingencies your boss puts on you can be a bit unpleasant. :D

Thus far the game is rolling right along, and the party still has no idea of my true nature (though the now-TN Cleric does know I'm evil).

I'll confess...made me laugh out loud.

I'm not a big fan of PVP, so sorry, I can't help you, but i thought that the choices provided to us were laid out well.

It seems to me you have good plans, but you need to make infalliable evidence that it's his fault (whether it is or is not). Like Gloomweave said, you don't need much more evidence then you have; this is no courtroom.

What I would do is try the talk it out method, but be ready for him to attack you. Disarm and kill him (I can't really see a failure there, you can try more than once if you need too). You can use color spray if you think you could stop him with it, but it doesn't seem likely. Since this will likely wake the others, be yelling about how he attacked you first while you were just talking to him, or something. If you manage to be quick enough, stab yourself in the side/back and claim it was him.

If you don't think you can, tie up/coup de grace to the chest with your ranseur. Then untie him, dischevel the area, and stab yourself in the back or soemthing similar. Wake the others up by yelling something along the lines of victory over the traitor!

Hope I helped :/

Im not sure, but i dont think tied up is the same thing as helpless.

i like plan C, but i would change it some.

knock out poison as normal, carry him to the mimic and tr to convince it to kill him while giving your rope back. -it seems reasonable-. then wake the party to a rushed "you guys have to help me, he wouldnt listen and i think he snuck off toward that mimic, no idea why". They show up and he has been eaten by the mimic. unfortunatly i think this might mean the party kills the mimic, but eh your an evil drow.
