Kind of an issue... [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-19-06, 09:17 AM I sometimes get irritated with the standard characters. A few months ago I opted to go with a samurai. But when I did this, other players and, in my belief, the DM, targeted me for being different. The half-orc threw a snowball at me which knocked me off a building and knocked me out for quite some time. In the past month I played a black(yeah I can say that because I am:D) fighter. I was called a moor several times and targeted for random street fights at every town. So, my question boils down to this, is it wrong to play anything "different"?

12-19-06, 09:39 AM I think the problem is the group, not your choices. We don't know anything about what's going on the minds of the other players in response to your roleplaying. However, if you are being attacked simply because you are different (and samurai are really not all that different from fighters), then you may want to address with your group.

12-19-06, 10:09 AM This sounds like a problem with the group and the DM. Unless you are doing something to provoke this attitude from the group, the answer is no you shouldn't be treated like this and there is definatly no problem with playing different type charecters.

Now, if that's the way your DM runs his world, then the Half-Orc character should be targeted because he's the result of an "unholy union" between man and orc. He should be treated as a monster. Personally I think your DM needs to seriously consider those factors, and others, for his game if he wants to make things fair (or he could just stop the targeting altogether).

Agreed. If all of the characters had something that made them distinctive, and there for open to ridicule by small minded NPCs, then it wouldn't be to bad. More of a bonding experience for the party. But, if only your character is on the receiving end far more than anyone else, there is a group problem.

It sounds like your group age is young. How old are you and your group?

12-20-06, 03:50 AM Ok, basically the samurai was a different dm. With that I was actually encouraged to not play an asian character. The Orc targeted me for special abuse, like the snowball thing. It also seemed to **** off my party members that I didn't indulge in ale. With the moor I just sort of got up and left the session. The new Dm explained that it was because I looked different but that still doesn't justify the centaur and the orc(not half, just pure) running around town killing everyone. And with my ninja I saved a boy from dying by taking a snowball(long story). I lost half my hp for that and I still got sidelong glances from townfolk. Yeah just to clarify...

Anyway, they need to get over it, and that includes the DM. If they don't want samurais, they should just say "No samurais", not punish you for choosing to play one. The group needs to accept the fact that you are playing the same game that they are and not be such jerks. If they wanted to play a samurai, would there be an issue?
This gets to the heart of the matter. Maybe they consider you, not your characters, to be fair game as a target of their jokes. Maybe they do this because they don't like you as anything other than a target. I don't know the specific group dynamics, but it seems like everyone else enjoys targetting you.
Answer this; Do other characters ever get knocked off the roof by a snowball? Do other characters ever get tormented because of their race or skin color? Do other players ever use a class that is something other than core?
