| Tarquinius01-13-07, 10:55 PM | I think we have all met them. Perhaps I have a tendancy to run into them more often. Many of my fellow PCs seem to have an irrepressable urge to steal things. They ninja-loot kills, they steal from other PCs and have even attempted to frame my character for stealing an item he rightfully owned (a circle of truth spell sorted it all out). It seems to me that my character, a fighter, will never get the equipment he needs to succeed as an adventurer (fighters are what their feats and equipment make them after all) if I cannot aquire enough loot due to other character's selfish acts of larceny. Besides an outright asskicking how am I to stop other characters from stealing my stuff, stuff that should not be stolen (ex. ancient dragon's treaure by a level 5 PC and yes they did try), or stuff that belongs to people I care about or depend on? As far as run-of-the-mill NPCs go I don't care as much so long as they don't get caught. I'll even help them if they decide they want to knock-over the local jewlers so long as we do it with some degree of stealth and tactics. So how do I get the other PCs to share loot and channel their stealing urges into more productive means for the party as a whole? |
| philnicau01-13-07, 11:08 PM | If they steal from NPCs then remind them that actions have consequences, ie: the person they stole from is rich and influential so he hires people to cast divinations, and then sends powerful adventures after the thief. If they steal from the players They die!, remember the DM has infinite power! |
| Nightbluejh01-13-07, 11:16 PM | As a warrior you can one, as you pointed out kick thier butts, two, not protect them when they need your protection, three, embaress them by pointing out to everyone you know and meet that they are known thieves, four, beat thier butts in, five, and finallly take the DM off to the side or speak to him seperatly and explain to him/her the problems this presents for you PC there are always lots of fun and entertaining things DMs can do dissuade or teach lessons to pifering PCs |
| bob_the_great01-13-07, 11:29 PM | i believe in telling the other players that I play D&D for fun and don't enjoy being stolen from. If they insist on doing it then I tell the DM it's an issue and that I'll be forced to leave the group. i'm kind of straightforward like that. i haven't had to deal with it though. maybe i've just been lucky. in my last game people would miss a session and when they arrived for the next they'd often be greeted with "we picked up this item that would be perfect for you. you now have a (insert item here)." |
| Tarquinius01-14-07, 12:09 AM | Well I could tell the town gaurd of their exploits but they know of mine as well. As I mentioned before I am not averse to stealing from NPCs so long as the theft is not too malicious or damaging. An example would be that I am currently attempting to infiltrate the clergy of Pelor and eventually rob them blind. Two of the people in my group know this. One used to be willing to steal from me but eventually came around to the conclusion that without my items I have no means to keep his ass from being stomped but the other not so much. She has a friendship with the monk who doesn't like me very much and acts a bit too chaotic for most DMs to have let her remain a monk but my DM is pretty lenient in that aspect. I'll probobly bring it up if she tries to steal from me again. Of course I could probobly subdue or kill the next person who steals from me but I find that PvP fights always end in misery for everybody. But to sum it up I have a druid an a paladin on my side if **** hits the fan and the female klepto bard has a monk and a rogue. I think I would win should combat be an issue. Though I rather it didn't. |
| Krusk01-14-07, 02:23 AM | Would you hang out with guys who steal from you constantly? -if so we need to hang out- Seriously, say in character "you know guys, im done with that, im leaving" and roll a new character more like theirs. or depending on how your character would react, the second you notice they stole, "i notice he took something that is mine? well then whats his AC? i have quick draw, full attack" you get the item back. |

Why would I leave when I am not doing anything wrong? I like my character and am not about to re-roll for something this stupid. I talked to the monk today and she agreed that she will not steal from me any more. That is two out of three kleptos down, one to go. Since she is friends with the other two I don't think she will be hard to persuade. |
| Dm_Farble01-14-07, 04:05 PM | In my dnd group I havent had to deal with anyone stealing items from each other. I'm not really sure I see how you COULD steal from another character. After an adventure or something they usually just sell most of the stuff and split the gold evenly. Sometimes they want to keep a certain magic item, but not usually. If it were me I would just do a pvp match for the items with a couple ofhealers standing by in case things get too gorey. |

Also they ninja-loot which means that they loot corpses or rooms when nobody else is around and they don't share. |
| Issabella01-14-07, 09:14 PM | in dragonlance we all them kenders! |
| DarkNick01-14-07, 09:41 PM | Well, I would threaten them. "This is all fun in all, but If you take my stuff, I will **** in your backpack. Do it again and I will then kill you, I'll kill your dog, I will murder your horse, I will then take all your money and pay some bums to have their way with your body. I will then have you raised as a zombie to be my own personal slave and everyday I will chop another slice off your undead willie and make you eat it." Then follow through with it. They should get the message after you **** in their backbacks" At least this way they will stop taking your stuff. Or you could just talk to them out of character and explain how you feel. |
| jeffepp01-14-07, 09:45 PM | Once we dropped one down a nearly bottomless pit that spontaneously appeared in the middle of town when he tried to steal from a barkeep. We had been in town for only about 5 min. This was the player that played a thief, no matter what the game, and you didn't want him any where near your magic trade binder in RL. |
| theotherdraxen01-14-07, 09:55 PM | I suggest you try this (http://www.freefilehosting.org/public/29491/steve.pdf). |

Since she is friends with the other two I don't think she will be hard to persuade. thats why i had the other suggestion of "kill them in their sleep". I wasnt sure how your character would react. Remember move silently and coup de grace is going to be your friend here. Dont forget not to wear your armor for this task. But keep in mind their next characters are probably going to be very similar. And players who steal from the party seem like the type that hold a grudge and their next characters would probably not only do the same, but kill you for the out of game reasons. BEst suggestion is to find a new group, or adopt to their playing style. |
| DM Denubis01-15-07, 02:26 AM | Honestly, I think you've already found the best way of dealing with it. Talk to them out of game. I'm not huge on PvP, combat or theft. Personally, I think it detracts from the game. |
| BW022201-15-07, 03:26 AM | Tarquinius, Trust is the core of any unit. What happens in the army when someone is caught steeling from his fellow soldiers... they take him out back and beat the snot out of him. Honestly, if you can't trust someone not to steel from the people who protect, heal, and risk their necks for each other... then the guy belongs on his own. All groups should have a simple rule... if the PCs vote your PC out of the party, then that player must leave the game. In the real world, if you steel from your friends, workmates, budies, etc. then you are sent off on your own. After doing this a few times, maybe the player(s) will learn. |
| seldom_seen01-15-07, 11:04 PM | I love playing sneaky bastard thieves, and once I had one that was the only lockpicker in the party. He got first crack at any loot we came across, but.... Anything useful to the other players went to them. I drew the line at actually taking anything from their persons. I was a little guy, and the battle tanks in the group would have made short work of me. If you have the type of guy who will steal from friends, then there is a problem. I would think somebody stealing from party mates would and should be handled in character. Let the ass whuppin' commence. |
