10-13-06, 09:57 PM I am starting a character, he will be my first character. I have been DM for a few months and am joining another campaign. My character will be a lawful good knight. Any names will help. Remember it will begin with 'sir'.

Duke LaFontaine - a lot of knights are also royalty or have rank, so this could work

10-20-06, 11:43 AM For humans I usually go with a campaign appropriate given name (Torek or Berel or something for default medieval, Jarl or something for nordic, etc) and a made-up, personalized "last" name (Cooper for an NPC barrel-maker, Stormbringer or Magebane or Goldbanner for a knight). What's your knight like? I had a knight who had survived a number of slaughter-battles; she took the name Elanor Crowsfeast.

And he would recite this to anyone who asked his name. He was entertaining. :)

Examples might be: Raoul de Montliard the Bastard; Raoul de Montliard the Vile; Raoul de Montliard the Black; Raoul de Montliard the Glowing; Raoul de Montliard the Pius; Raoul de Montliard the Red-Faced. Personally I like the last example; the reason being that it is very open to interpretation. Red-Faced could mean he is an angery man, He a man who loves a good pint of Mead... Or 7, he likes to paint his face red with warpaint, he has a naturally red face, he was embaraced at a formal occasion such as a cherry pie was thrown at his face or perhaps he offended a Misstress of a Duke and she threw her goblet filled with Red wine into his face. There are many possabilities. The simple addition of an ambigious term can easily and instantly add levels of depth to the character's personality that before were hidden or unbeknownst to the other players and NPCs.

I'm sure you know all of this, so I shall close with my choice for a good knight's name: Frédéric Wildgrove d'Cortina the Stiff. :D

If you are following the medieval model, though, then it is one or the other, not both. Both place name (of Montliard) and descriptors (the Bastard) were used before surnames to differentiate individuals, in this case to know to which Raoul one was referring. Profession names were also used (smith, thatcher, tanner, etc.).

Sir Saint Montdeu III, his first name is Pierre. Very haughty and superior.

Sir Boarhill, Jack. Very earthy and charismatic. Comes from a rural area.

Sir Ander, Richard. Educated and knowledgeable. Raised and educated in a large town.

Sir Darenhar, Henry A bit of a dandy. He spends a lot of time in the king's court trying to seduce the ladies.

Oh, yes I realize that but this is a fantasy game so I figured a little bending of the rules wouldn't hurt. A lot of people that play D&D put such little thought into their name, such as 2 of the people I game with. They could care less what their name is - it could be Bob the Builder, Adrius Bewit the Dark or even Barney - And it still woulnd't matter. Personally I like crafting realiztic historically acurate names such as in Roman/Latin using the 3 name system and adding victory titles if necessary. All too many like the Roman style but tend to dote on the "Augustus," "Caesar" and "Germanicus" names. Most simply name their character Germanicus Augustus and theink they have crafted a witty Roman-esc name. Yet in truth all they have done is taken 2 great Roman names and smooshed them together like PB&J.

In conclusion, yes I did bend the typical naming conventions for medeavil times but did so out of love and the hope that people would be inspired to dedicate more time into the naming of their character as well as intertwining that into their character's history and personality. :D
