| Tonio04-01-07, 11:06 PM | How come so many people play, or talk about playing, kobolds as PCs? Please don't take this as implied criticism or anything of the sort. It just sometimes seems as if kobold was one of the listed races in the PHB. I can understand wanting to play humanoids, but why the rage with kobolds, and not, say, orcs? If the answer is "cuz who really hasn't wanted to play kobolds from day 1?!?!?", then I understand. :D But recently I've really started to believe I'm missing something... |
| Rocketboy1304-01-07, 11:37 PM | Because they are funny. |
| Tonio04-02-07, 12:09 AM | Because they are funny. That's what I meant... in all seriousness, is this, and others like this, the only reasons? |
| Maekrix_Waere04-02-07, 12:17 AM | Only reasons I could see why people would want to make kobolds: A)Pun-Pun B)Races of the Dragon |
| Jefuri no Oni04-02-07, 12:34 AM | Because kobolds are adorable and awsome. |
| Kadasbrass04-02-07, 12:37 AM | Kobolds are popular because: A) Clear mascot for the underdog. B) They stand out from goblins due to being more unique to a degree. Goblins appear in alot of places in both D&D and the fantasy genre but Kobolds don't get mention much. C) The first 3rd edition adventure, Sunless Citadel, had a named kobold named Meepo that players seem to remember more then other npcs in adventures and the game in general. Alot of groups have their own "Meepo story" based on how the dm played it, so gives people something to swap with each other. D) Similar to Meepo, there was a npc in Neverwinter expansions called Deekin that players enjoyed as well. Deekin defeated one of the lords of hell for me (I just stood back with a rez stick and brought him back everytime he died). So for me it was Deekin that caused me to love the kobold. Kobolds were popular long before Pun-pun or Races of the Dragon. Races of the Dragon was made mainly because kobolds were so popular. |
| green_yawgmoth04-02-07, 01:12 AM | Kobolds are popular because: A) Clear mascot for the underdog. This is what I'm going with. Also, they're an LA +0 race with sorcerer as a favored class, which automatically makes them awesome. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Ace_of_time04-02-07, 02:42 AM | It's because everybody thinks your weak, Which always gives you the upper hand. If your party walked up on a group, a half orc bar, elven ranger, human mage, and Kobold. Which would you attack 1st. Kob lives forever! |
| Drag0nUL04-02-07, 02:46 AM | I mostly play kobolds because I consider them funny. Neverwinter Nights had a big role in this(not only Deekin, but all kobold NPC's were funny like hell). And, unlike other MM races(orcs, goblinoids), Races of the Dragon provides kobolds with a variety of unique options(I finally have more liberty with my sorcerer gish builds due to grater draconic rite of passage). |
| Plactus04-02-07, 03:32 AM | D) Similar to Meepo, there was a npc in Neverwinter expansions called Deekin that players enjoyed as well. Deekin defeated one of the lords of hell for me (I just stood back with a rez stick and brought him back everytime he died). So for me it was Deekin that caused me to love the kobold. On the other hand, it was Deekin that caused me to hate kobolds. Still, I can sort of see the appeal of a kobold PC. Realizing it was a kobold who snuffed it takes some of the sting out of PC death. |
| Yokomohoyo04-02-07, 03:44 AM | What I don't quite understand is Racial Feats: A kobold character gains feats according to its character class. Does that mean that the Kobold Sorc gains a feat every level or like a normal Sorc every 4th level? I mean if it gains like a normal sorc then why have the favored class sorc and not wizard? |
| Archangel6204-02-07, 04:48 AM | Kobolds appeal to me more from the perspective of they look weak but they actualyl have a fair amount of strength if you build them intelligently. A bonus to dexterity, small size, Natural armor. As a caster they can be quite effective, the same holds true for warlocks. Also, the substitution options and the Dragonwrought feat give a lot of new power and versatility to your standard Kobold. But, for me, my interest in them began with Tuckers Kobolds. |
| tharivol26604-02-07, 06:29 AM | In rp situations kobs are likely to be underestimated which can give you an advantage if you play it right. and as to why kobs are prefferable to orcs and goblins...well orcs and gobs are ugly where kobs have a sense of style. |
| Ace_of_time04-02-07, 11:32 AM | I'm playing one now because I think a Kobold lich would the coolest thing ever. |
| green_yawgmoth04-02-07, 11:35 AM | What I don't quite understand is Does that mean that the Kobold Sorc gains a feat every level or like a normal Sorc every 4th level? I mean if it gains like a normal sorc then why have the favored class sorc and not wizard?A kobold gains a feat at first and third level, and every third level after, just like a normal character. Also, WoW has kobolds in it, which are just plain funny. They're all really low level, and they yell "you no take candle!" when they attack. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| nightwyrm04-02-07, 02:21 PM | I'm playing a dragonwrought kobold dragonfire adapt right now and it's totally awesome. He's this short little dragon that walks around and breath fire on people. |
| Tonio04-02-07, 02:31 PM | What's all this about Kobolds and Dragons? Again, did I miss something? Mebbe some book I don't have? Or, again, is it just the "fun factor" of mixing up the lowly comical kobold with the magnificent regal dragon? |
| nightwyrm04-02-07, 02:33 PM | Kobolds consider themselves to be very distant cousins of dragons. It's in Races of the Dragons. There are many feats in there that allows you to make your kobold very dragonlike. |
| darkneolink04-02-07, 02:46 PM | well they bought me with the game "Kobolds ate my baby" But i also like to play gullys in dragonlance |
| Krusk04-02-07, 03:03 PM | the interest to me comes from the description of their voice. I imagine them like little yappy dog lizards. Which of course is what you want to adventure with. |
| Kadasbrass04-02-07, 03:59 PM | Up till races of the Dragon, a few places used the connection of kobolds and dragons. In Sunless Citadel Meepo was in charge of watching the clans dragon. But it was the job of the clans "Omega" member to do (baby dragons claw things... alot...) In Neverwinter there was the connection of Deekin with dragon's blood of some kind. In the Hordes of the Underdark expansion Deekin can become a Red Dragon Discipline to build on this idea. Kobolds were given favored class sorcerer to reflect their connection with dragons, since the core book assumes dragons was the default ancester for sorcerers, if any. Personally I joke that kobolds are half-dragon fleas... But current material has built on the draconic connection in different ways. Some of the creation stories, from RotD and a Dragon issue few yaers ago, deal with kobolds being created by either Tiamat or from other dragons directly. One story is that kobolds were born from the Eggs of Tiamat that were stolen from adventurers but since had been away from the nest so long they couldn't hatch into real dragons, instead they hatch into weaker dragons, aka kobolds. Another story deals with Dragons starting off as gods but wanting more power and thus becoming mortals, in the process they cut off parts of their body and the blood and parts they gave up in the process became kobolds. In Kingdom of Kalamar I believe the story was that kobolds were born from the body of a dead dragon that had died trying to drive away a god of some kind, which plays along with kobolds being affaird of the sun since its the eye of the god they fear. |
| Ace_of_time04-02-07, 04:18 PM | What's all this about Kobolds and Dragons? Again, did I miss something? Mebbe some book I don't have? Or, again, is it just the "fun factor" of mixing up the lowly comical kobold with the magnificent regal dragon? Kobold were spawned from dragon blood to be the servants. |

WoW Kobolds are the Andro-Mice with lit candles. Far from Draconic. |
| green_yawgmoth04-02-07, 05:22 PM | Those aren't the same sort of Kobolds. WoW Kobolds are the Andro-Mice with lit candles. Far from Draconic. Splitting hairs. The original kobolds from germanic lore were goblinoid things that seeded silver mines with cobalt; I don't see anyone defending the differences there. Besides, you don't know that they aren't dragon-descended - dragons in WoW are quite different from D&D dragons, but we still call them dragons and know that they have enough in common to refer to them with the same name. In this case, they're all low-level encounters that almost always involve a mine. I'm making a kobold encounter where every other kobold the PCs meet yells "you no take candle!" now. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Saberus04-03-07, 12:30 AM | They're small, annoying, and easily punted. The sorc as favored class means they can fry your arse in 2 shakes. Good at hiding, trapmaking, and ambushing, they can make some nasty rogues as well. It seems silly, but I think the biggest plus is, alongside the advantages of being small, they can still move at 30' a round! |
| Ace_of_time04-03-07, 01:34 AM | If you like fast kobolds try Bar/Monk/ scout. This one will drive your DM nuts. |
| Saberus04-03-07, 01:48 AM | If you like fast kobolds try Bar/Monk/ scout. This one will drive your DM nuts. |
| CrossBlade04-03-07, 02:27 AM | What I liked about what RotD was that because of the dragonblood type, Kobolds could start with wings with thier 1 feat they start with. |
| Needle04-03-07, 04:46 AM | I love Kobolds, and just started a Kobold character. The present D&D Kobolds are their most unique race they have come up with imo.. they have such great lore being built around them, and really cool looking and underestimated. Unlike their other cool races (such as Illithid) they have 0LA and are playable. Races of the Dragon was an awesome book, my favorite in recent times. |
| Comus04-03-07, 08:49 AM | Ah, I can't wait for my GF to start her new game up. The whole party'll be playing Kobolds (all two of us). Soon the world will know the power of my Kobold Crusader! |
| Magnus02904-03-07, 11:37 AM | Simply put, Kobolds Rock! My next PC will be a kobold and I have no doubt that he will be the life of the party. |
| snakeman83004-03-07, 03:57 PM | Because Kobolds are the only things where a sane DM will let you play as a Great Wyrm with. That and they are just worth it for their comic-releif factor. |
| Ace_of_time04-03-07, 06:46 PM | Get the Dragonwrought feat and than start gain dragon hit die. kobold with 1d12 |
| Radiun04-03-07, 08:05 PM | Just a side note: Kobolds + Giant Size = Many Style Points Who'll be stuffing who into a bag now? :P |
| Tonio04-03-07, 08:45 PM | Get the Dragonwrought feat and than start gain dragon hit die. kobold with 1d12 Wouldn't a Kobold Barbarian have 1d12 anyway? Or would he get a smaller hit die, cuz of his size? (Afaik, halflings don't get smaller hit die for being small....) |
| nightwyrm04-03-07, 08:48 PM | Class hit dice is not affected by race, so a dragonwrought kobold sorcerer still uses d4s. |
| tharivol26604-03-07, 08:59 PM | i think that kobold sorcerers should get 1d1-1+con bonus at every level. |
| Radiun04-03-07, 09:04 PM | i think that kobold sorcerers should get 1d1-1+con bonus at every level. ... >.> <.< ... Because? |

| tharivol26604-03-07, 09:53 PM | What siggy? The 1/4th hit die in the kobold entry in a racial hit die. siggy= signature = every one of my posts has a good 95% chance of having a good dose of sarcassm and jokes |
| calronmoonflower04-03-07, 10:27 PM | Forgot one siggy per thread. |

Dragons hit die is d12 it doesn't matter the size. When their type changes so does their hit die, AKA animals to magical beast via the Awaken spell. That means the kobold Would get the HD skill points BAb and everything. Even good saves on all base saves. |
| Ace_of_time04-03-07, 10:47 PM | What siggy? The 1/4th hit die in the kobold entry in a racial hit die. When their type changes so does their hit die. |
| calronmoonflower04-03-07, 10:54 PM | When their type changes so does their hit die. I was refering to hit die gained from class levels. Those don't change unless your undead. |
| Ace_of_time04-04-07, 12:15 PM | Class hit dice is not affected by race, so a dragonwrought kobold sorcerer still uses d4s. I was typeing about gaining dragon class levels. |
| Ace_of_time04-04-07, 12:21 PM | I was refering to hit die gained from class levels. Those don't change unless your undead. You could still gain dragon monster class levels. EX: A 5th level kobold sorc, with the DW feat could take the next 2 or 3 levels in the dragon monster class for those benefits. |
| nightwyrm04-04-07, 12:23 PM | Which book is that from? |
| Ace_of_time04-04-07, 12:29 PM | In races of the dragon there is a feat called Dragonwrought which changes the kobold type from dragon blooded to dragon. Since their type changed they would be able gain dragon class levels. They wouldn't get breath weapon or anything like that but would still get skill points Base saves and all. |
| nightwyrm04-04-07, 12:30 PM | I know where the dragonwrought feat is, but where is the book that details dragon level progression. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_04-04-07, 12:34 PM | Because kobolds are adorable and awsome. QFT. In our homebrew world Kobolds are a PC race (replaced Gnomes). They also do not have a reptilian lineage, rather they evolved from squirrels. I am serious. |
| Ace_of_time04-04-07, 12:36 PM | You can use the MM 3.5. If your asking if there is a book that has dragon levels for kobolds I don't think it's in a book but most monster class aren't. The Draconomicon could be helpful. And the races of dragon has their age cat's in it. It wouldn't be to hard to come up with one. |
| nightwyrm04-04-07, 12:40 PM | Oh, so you mean just advancing monsters as per the MM rules. I thought you mean something you might want to do with a PC. Still, it's rather subpar to advance as a dragon if all you get are hd, bab, saves and skills. Even a fighter level is better since it gets you bonus feats. |
| Ace_of_time04-04-07, 12:51 PM | Since it is a monster class it would not incur the xp penalty. The fighter class don't have good saves on all Base saves, they use the fighter BAB, and will not be limited on the number of att they get at 20 like the sorc/fighter would. Their limit would be when the get 4 attacks. AKA: the fighter/ sorc would stop gaining more att's for high BAB at 20 level. The DRA/ sorc would only be limited to when ever they got 4 attacks. That is not even including the 6+int for skil points. |

Dragon HD progression is in the MM, under "advancing creaures". A dragon HD has full BAB, all good saves, and 6+int skill points. It's one of the few monster HD worth spending a level on. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |

I said where the DW feat was, and where dragon HD was. assumptions = bad, m'kay? Thanks for playing. Outsiders don't get a d12, either; they get a d8, but get the same BAB/save progression and 8+int skill points. Definitely another worthy monster HD. I think that the other HD types suck, though. Definitely not worth the LA that WotC gives them. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| aotrscommander04-04-07, 08:06 PM | Personally, I've always seen Kobolds as another, smaller type of goblinoid, not disimilar to Warhammer's Snotlings. Indeed, in all but official campaign worlds, they are depicted as such. This image - which, granted is of unclear origins - has survived through 2nd Ed (when Kobolds were rat/dog-like, not reptilian) into 3.x. It may have come from Rolemaster, but I don't even think that was responcible, so go figure... As a great irony, I found that Dragon Mountain, the Kobold adventure of 2nd Ed as it were, depicts Kobolds in the illustrations based on the picture of the Goblin in the Monster Manual of 2nd, not as the dog-like creatures they were then. This is especially ironic, since as I am converting the module to 3.5, am I replacing what fits perfectly with own personal typified image of Kobolds with that of the 3.x version...(which granted, is light-years ahead of the earlier rat/dog thing.) |

Can you post that rule for me because the only thing I have found is that they usually take class level but no where where it said that a monster with by class under Advan can't take a hit or two. |
| Toran_A_Sunder04-04-07, 09:46 PM | If you like fast kobolds try Bar/Monk/ scout. This one will drive your DM nuts. I played in the RtoEE as a kobold named Yik-Yik (cookie for the reference). He was a gestalt Monk/Scout. Took a lot of feats and stuff from PHBII...made if friggin awesome. His speed was ridiculous...i think 60 ft. at 5 level...something like that. DM blew though and said that the fast movement from monk and scout stopped stacking at a certain level. Gay! :D Awesome character though. Not cute. Very serious and wise. And powerful, for a 3 foot lizard. Oh, he was dragonwrought too. Had wings and all. Kicked ARSE! |
| Limousine_Liberal04-04-07, 09:47 PM | Yeah, it's the underdog status that makes them so popular, but it is a longstanding tradition with them. Back in first edition, for a long time, kobolds were a bit of a joke because they were so weak, expressly made even weaker than goblins. Then they started publishing storylines featuring kobolds that were actually dangerous (even to a reasonably well leveled party). One of the more popular of these involved kobolds making and setting traps (a precursor to 2nd edition Dragon Mountain boxed set)...which started mini-tradition in and of itself (despite the fact that kobolds were of low/average intelligence). Those were also the days when they were suggested as being related to Dragons (nothing in the Monster Manual even hinted anything about that). These adventures (which I recall reading about in Dragon Magazine...or maybe Dungeon...too many years ago now) started a bit of a cult around the little buggers, trying to make them interesting opponents for PCs. When monstrous races became more acceptable as PCs, they were an obvious choice because everyone knew that a kobold played intelligently could be a threat, and they had a lot of backstory accumulated through all those previous adventures. (Now, in third edition, they are if anything relatively stronger than they used to be. Power creep has hit them pretty hard.) |

It's not an absolute statement only because DMs might want to make an exception for some extraordinary case. |

They say that so the DM can add HD on them If he sees fit. and the type changes him to dragon and they can do ether/or. But you are right that the DM has to approve anything made into a PC. But RAW doesn't say anywhere that you can't. |

As part of the Dragonwrought feat, a Dragonwrought Kobold can take the Dragon Wings feat at 3rd level, even though it is otherwise only available at first level. Any creature that is of the Humanoid[Dragonblood] (like Kobolds), or Dragon (like Dragonwrought Kobolds) type can take the Dragon Wings feat. |

| Toran_A_Sunder04-05-07, 11:03 AM | OOTC! I like cookies! LOL...I'm going to assume to meant OOTS...but because I am a generous and benevolent deity... :cookie: |
| calronmoonflower04-06-07, 02:26 AM | You're not reading what I'm typing, you're putting in what you want to see and responding to it. That's what we call a Strawman. Stop that. I am simply putting the rules out there, as they are requested. Also, it isn't mandatory that a creature drop one HD for a class level. It's just a tremendously good idea because all monster HD, save for dragon and outsider, suck like a black hole. I can see why you might think that, but I really didn't understand what you where saying. I looked it up in the Dungeon Master's Guide and it say you must start with one or more class level for a monster race with 1 or less hit die, but it doesn't say that you must forfeit that hit if you start at 2+ levels. Getting back on topic. Playing a kobold is as close as the core set has to a dragon that a PC can play. Also if you have Races of the Dragon (and the web enhancement) you get some really good traits to compensate for the bad ability scores. |

I didn't know that there was a web enhancement, I have to look it up. My kobold has 2 more levels till lich heaven. how long can people live paralyze. I might have to replace the dead ones after they pass on. Maybe I can make some of those Ion stone that let you go without eat or drinking. |
| UltimateReality04-06-07, 10:10 AM | I'm playing one now because I think a Kobold lich would the coolest thing ever. GANKED for my next campaign. That would seriously make an awesome BBEG. |
| Toran_A_Sunder04-06-07, 11:36 AM | GANKED for my next campaign. That would seriously make an awesome BBEG. Seconded |
| Ace_of_time04-06-07, 08:29 PM | I'm trying to make him a boss but they like him so much they'll join his side. |
| Damior04-06-07, 10:01 PM | Kobolds=Awesome. crunch and fluff, they are among the best in my book. They even beat out elves in the fluff category. On a side note, I have a PC in my campaign playing a were-cat kobold rogue, sneaky to the extreme. In the same campaign I plan on having an important kobold knight npc |
| turalisj04-06-07, 10:18 PM | I love 'em because it gives me a chance of playing a dragon-like character, without the level adjustment. The 'Meepo' for me would have to be a courageous little kobold named Uleok. He started out as a minor character whom my swashbuckler made wet himself, and grew into a courageous little thing that would give anything to assist us. ^_^' |

| turalisj04-07-07, 02:07 AM | DAVTK Dragons Against Violence To Kobolds. :D Put it in your sig and rally the troops! |
| Ace_of_time04-08-07, 01:21 AM | My next kobold will be a wight monk, what do you think. |
| _Jayne_Cobb_04-09-07, 12:42 PM | Yes there is, BLASPHEMY! Hell no. Making them reptiles was the blasphemy. Before 3e they used to be an ill-defined kinda-dog kind-rat kinda-lizard looking thing. A large, hairless bipedal squirrel actually fits much better with the cowardice and strange, unfamiliar appearance of the classic kobold than does them being little dragon-men. |

Hmm, still not getting the Squirrel thing though... Also I love where you say making them reptiles is blasphemy and yet in your own description you refer to them as kinda lizard  I can go with the dog reference, the whole yipping and yapping thing.... but squirrell? |
| _Jayne_Cobb_04-09-07, 12:57 PM | Hmm, still not getting the Squirrel thing though... Oh well. Also I love where you say making them reptiles is blasphemy and yet in your own description you refer to them as kinda lizard  Glad you love it. I thought "ill-defined kinda-dog kind-rat kinda-lizard looking thing" made it pretty darn clear that they were not exclusively, or even primiarly, lizard-like in any way and the the use of the word "looking" made it abundantly clear that I was speaking solely of appearance. I can go with the dog reference, the whole yipping and yapping thing.... but squirrell? Sorry, I guess I forgot about all those yipping and yapping lizards. |
| Magnus02904-09-07, 01:01 PM | Hey now, there is that yapping lizard all over the TV... man I wish that Geiko lizard would shut the hell up. More than Happy to concede Annoying dog/lizard thing. |

Concede whatever you wish, it affects my game not one iota. And I concur 100% about that damned Geiko gecko. |

More than Happy to concede Annoying dog/lizard thing. the only thing is however that geckos are amphibians and lizards are reptiles. the geiko gecko is not a lizard. but i agree |

| Ace_of_time04-09-07, 06:39 PM | Well he is also not a kobold! |
| meshon04-10-07, 10:02 AM | But, for me, my interest in them began with Tuckers Kobolds. You are OLD! Or maybe you just enjoy reading really old Dragon magazines... I too fell in love with Kobolds after that editorial and I think that the development of Kobolds into what they are today can probably be traced back to that one article. Tucker's Kobolds were the Sex Pistols of the New Kobold Wave. cheers! meshon |
