hi,
we are going to play a 2 player campaign with a lvl 4 gnome wizard and a human rog1/pal3. we start at 4th level. i play the rogue paladin and i thought up my whole background stiry and my play style. i wanted to play the towns hero, the blond haired bleu eyed guy who kills evil and gets the booty.
al fine till we rolled hit points. with my 12 con and my 6 hit points for the rogue level i rolled a two, a hour and another two. which makes an sucky 18 hit opints for the so called evil slayer. my character is the flesh shield of the miniparty. but without much flesh, i think the campaign will be over soon. wat should i do! i don't want to spend my feats on toughness. because i only have three to spend. and with tougness, it would only raise to 21.
a good armor to prevent losing hit points is a good idea, but with my dex score of 10, i doubt getting an AC over 19. i don't want to quit beforehand because that would suck even more. any solutions?

any solutions?

Yes... get over it and roleplay.

So you don't get to powergame this adventure... thems the breaks.

You get full HP for first level.

As a melee fighter, you should have a Con of 14 minimum. And yes, feats like Improved Toughness (+1 hp/level) are things melee fighters should invest in. No dex, only 12 con... you are not meant to be the big heavy with those numbers.

Yeah, where'd you put your good stats? If you don't get good rolls on stats, you should definitely not be a Paladin, since Paladins have 4 (5, counting Dex) important stats.

Ya know, every character gets hit from time to time. Its part of the game. Not every character has a +3 or 4 modifier in every ability score starting out. Just don't stress out, and play the game as it was intended.

Maybe try to convince your DM to let you reroll 1s and 2s for HP.

You don't need great stats to play a nice character. What you need is to play your character according to your statistics.
What are you scores anyway, and what skills have you invested in?

Also, roll your stats before you come up with a cool concept. That way, it might not all go as bad as it has now.

Why not just roll a D4 and add two then?

Why not just roll a D4 and add two then?

And if those ones and twos bother you, you could flip a coin and add four.

With a dex of 10 and a Con of 12, you're not a very good flesh shield. So don't try to be one. Learn to use ranged weapons, and use stealth.

Ok, here is my problem with your request.

i don't want to spend my feats on toughness. because i only have three to spend.

Aside from the pathetic and half-assed typing here, you basically explained why your inactions will cause your PC to be unplayable.

Ya' know all those threads that start with 'fixing toughness?' Yea, what they always come down to is toughness is a feat for level three fighters who rolled ones and twos on HD. Guess what. Your a level 3 fighter who rolled ones and twos on HD.

You will, at third level, have the pre-req's to take improved toughness, which will give you an additional 3 hp at the time you take it, and give you an additional HP per level (this had the effect of giving your HD a size boost, as it raises the average to the same as one size bigger).

Suck it up and use the rules to make your character effective.

Hmm, you've mentioned nothing but your character's weaknesses.

Can we have the full story on your character? Stats, any feats and equipment you've chosen?

After all, every character has weaknesses; but every character has strengths, and we don't know your character's strengths.

I agree with the others, though--your character is NOT meant to be a meat shield.

What's the rest of the party look like?

This is what you get for trying to min/max a level of rogue into the game for the skill points.

str - xx
dex - 10
con - 12
int - xx
wis - xx
cha - xx

Feats

Human Bonus - Toughness
Level 1 - Toughness
Level 3 - Improves Toughness

Rolles Rog1 6+1
Pal1 2+1
Pal2 4+1
Pal3 2+1

Add 6 for toughness, and 4 for imp toughness is a total of 28 HP

If you get into a similar problem with another character , sorry your rog/pal died btw.
Don't worry so much about the hit points. The paladins save bonuses means your likely only get partial damage. So the real problem is combat. At low level the way to deal with this is avoiding getting hit. Best possible armour, tower shield, and combat expertise as a feat(and always fight with max ac bonus) If you havn't the Int score for combat expertise , the other choice is offence, get the monster before it gets you. That has a down side, because you are a vulerable character, you need to pick your fights so what, and be prepared to retreat when necessary.

Great, flame wars broke out.

You have 3 options: Ask your DM for a reroll, take toughness as a feat and try to find some con boosting items, or just work with it.

Its alright for a character to have a weakness. I understand your concern with being unable to handle the front lines, but you can easily make that up with high AC and your ability to heal yourself.

Remember, paladins dont have to be big damage dealers most of the time. Your job is to keep enemies off your allies. Take combat expertise for added AC, and fight defensively. Dodge also helps. Rings of protection and a big nice shield (maybe even a tower shield) could help.

If you are worried about spells blasting you, take another level in rogue to get evasion. Your charisma bonus to saving throws should help and you will be immune to diseases in no time.

The point is this: compensation. Your character realizes he cant take a beating so he would most likely get whatever he can to avoid taking one wherever possible.

Your character is not unplayable. The other posters had a point about playing with it anyway, blunt and often rude as they were. Your character shouldnt be considered unplayable just because he isnt a maxed out character. Its one weakness in a rolling sea of strengths. Im sorry he died, but things happen. If we knew HOW that would help.

The USA doesn't statistically have a good record when it comes to grammar and spelling anyways. Think of their crazy spellings of colour and harbour.

i wanted to play the towns hero, the blond haired bleu eyed guy who kills evil and gets the booty.

And you blame your dice rolls for having a 'lame character'?
Sorry, but maybe its the dice hinting to get a more original story...

Dude if you want to be the uber meat shield, power melee guy then play..

Fighter 2, Barbarian 2, Human

Assuming an elite array (25 pt build) you could be..

str 15
dex 13
con 14
int 10
wis 12
cha 8

You get four feats

Exotic Weapon pro spiked chain
Combat reflexes
combat expertise
weapon focus spiked chain

you'd have 12 HP (bar 1) 6 hp (bar 2 average) 5 hp (fighter 1 avg) 5 hp fighter 2 avg) + 8 for con for a total of 36 HP

You'd be + 7 to hit (+ 8 if MW or magic weapon)
And deal 2d4+3 (+4 if magic)

You'd get 3 AoO per round, and threaten ten feat in all directions.. aka if they charge you get to attack them.

You can trip out to 10 feet with the weapon, or disarm from 10 feat with a +2 bonus. and not provoke unless they carry a reach weapon or have natural reach.

If the creatures have a high attack bonus you can sacrifice your +4 base attack bonus for +4 Dodge AC

Giving you a 16 AC naked.... 21 if you have a breastplate.. and still you move at 30' per round.

You can rage for an additional + 2 to hit, and +3 damage, and gain 8 more HP.

You just made a lame char bro...

Try harder next time.

Sounds like a rogue not so much like a Paladin... you're in it for fame and money not the glory of your God...
Besides, they may have changed it in 3.5, but I seem to recall that Paladins don't multiclass - only prc. Correct me if I'm wrong... maybe your dm allowed that... Why not going rogue 2 / fighter 2 (for the bonus feat and a little more fighting ability? In this case you can dump some low stats on wisdom and charisma...)
BTW those stats are not that bad they are just not suited to the combination you want to play.

with my 12 con and my 6 hit points for the rogue level i rolled a two, a hour and another two. which makes an sucky 18 hit opints for the so called evil slayer.

First level gets full hitpoints I think. Maybe one of our houserules, though...

'Good' -meaning armour with high armour bonus- at low (no-magic equipement) levels has most likely limitation on the dex bonus you can add to your AC anyway.
But many rogue abilitys are hindered by armour heavier than light...
Reconsider your stats... High dex should be in your best interest as a rogue, good reflex saves will make you able to avoid a lot of damage.
