| Leaves06-19-03, 05:37 PM | I love world building. Designing new monsters and ecologies, cities, nations, coming up with histories and legends, I love all of it. I figured out how to use photoshop as a random world-map generator a while ago, and I've compiled a folder full of maps just messing around in my free time. I discovered the World Creation Project board a few weeks ago, and i thought it was a really neat idea. Right up my alley, right? The thing is, the state of the world they were all working on was a Magic:TG based world. I don't play Magic. I don't care about Magic. And I am not really enthusiastic about participating in a Magic-based project. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just not my thing. So, I'd kinda really like to know: Is this board going to be continuing the work done on the old WCP board, or is it going to be starting over from scratch? I wouldn't expect people to want to discard all their hard work, but on the other hand, it would be a lot of work copying over all the old threads, too, wouldn't it? Anyhow, I may or may not be contributing, based on random factors like work, the weather, and the color of my underwear. Oh, and if you want me to make maps, I'm definately up for that! | Hierarch Leviticus06-19-03, 05:45 PM | Personally, I'm not up for a MTG-based world, either. That's more a conversion of cards to game; there's been an on-and-off d20 Dominaria thread on the Fantasy thinktank for quite some time. OTOH, using a few of the Magic concepts as one source for a new world sounds fabulous to me... Anyhow, we could start by getting a big map, and having people/groups stake claims. So if you want to make one, I'm in on that... (I'd like a big desert, please). Or, you may want to wait and see what other say on the topic. |

By the time of the switch, that certainly wasn't the case - we were creating gods, and underdark races, which is much more D&D-related than M:tG. Just post whatever you like - a country, a city, a race, an anything, and let yourself and others post relevant D&D stuff and M:tG cards based on it. I would personally prefer to keep what we'd done beforehand, as it really wasn't that much (as in it would be quick to transfer across - obviously people put a lot of work into what they did, and it's much appreciated - and in that it doesn't restrict the world that much, as we hadn't done that much in the way of mapping). The map is really good - what software did you make it with? |
| WizO_Iyala06-20-03, 05:49 PM | The idea of the project is to create a setting that can be used by both groups. The really big problem is that both groups feel the world is aimed at the other half because of the things that have to be added to what they'd expect. If that makes any sense. To me, the project seems firmly based towards D&D with a few Magic concessions, terms like Underdark, alignments, stats are all utterly foreign to me. There is *very* little on the old boards as it stands that is specificly magic based, most MTG references were simply as comparisons/examples. The big problem is that in many ways the MTG world is less flexible in that we need certain elements in any world that will be usable. It may not seem the same but I think it can be said for D&D too. You need certain races and characteristics to be set down in a world, whereas from an MTG point of view, once the basics are sorted (areas that will produce each clour of magic) pretty much anything goes. This all ended in a pretty big debate on terminology. As a rule we have tried our hardest to avoid anything that is specific to either use but sometimes it's unavoidable. MTG will always need land and colours, D&D will always need races and alignments. The project needs a delicate balance and it can only work if both sides can accept the other and the need for the resulting world to not only apeal but be usuable but the other playing group. Sometimes that means shutting up and letting the other side have their mana colors / elves and sometimes it means shouting really loud so your side doesn't get missed. Either way neither group can or should be ignored. Everyone needs to work together :) Some of the discussions we've had on the system of magic (little m ;)) for the world have proved just how much we can achieve when we work together :) |

I kinda like it actually. Even as just "a sample" it has a certain organic look to it. Doesnt have to be the whole world, but I'll gladly call that far right bit "the western shores" where the dunno roam? hehe. The other comments are mostly strategic. "Should we do this or that" "more M:tG more D&D?" ... The big problem is that in many ways the MTG world is less flexible in that we need certain elements in any world that will be usable. It may not seem the same but I think it can be said for D&D too. The water of the far right is quite a bit darker, as is that on the far left. One of the poles, maybe, with a wrap-around effect... clouds of dragon swarms vs dragon eaters darkening the skies! tweaked OP - Leaves  WizO_Iyala Hierarch Leviticus Bandido Rny2 ... and Me ;) |
| Rny202-01-06, 08:04 PM | what would be isolating the dragon-eaters, then? do they offshore, on the small isles, perhaps? on schools of dunnos? the water of the far right is quite a bit darker, as is that on the far left. One of the poles, maybe, with a wrap-around effect? clouds of dragon swarms or dragon-eaters darkening the skies? |
| the_one_true_shea02-02-06, 05:43 PM | well i think its kinda small to be a wrap around map |
| Rny202-03-06, 03:40 PM | Maybe just an slice of the world, so the rest of the world extends 'outwards' from the map instead of along the sides of the map. |
| the_one_true_shea02-04-06, 08:51 PM | There is no way this map shows underworld relationships, or the god shell... and unless we really want to actually force ever one of all the race onto mostly one landmass... Well would that be all that bad? A multitude of races all one one.. Massive continent.. yeah we could say its a HUGE continant.. |
