| Oops07-28-03, 01:37 PM | This is an idea I brought up on the old boards that should allow for more freedom in what we do here. The idea is this: we should come up with a way of coordinating dates between ourselves so that we can create races and civilizations that exist at different times. This will especially help people who want to use different levels of technology. |
| Leaves07-28-03, 02:58 PM | You'll notice a thread of nick's proposing a disappeared technological race. We were talking about how the race might have interacted (somehow) with the more tech-savvy gnomes before they disappeared. I was thinking that it would be logical for burrow/mariner gnome historians (but perhaps not the average gnome peasant) to mark time starting with the fall of the civilization of the ETRs (the Erukhora?) as a year zero. This may or may not be a useful point for us, but if there was indeed a widespread technological race that vanished centuries ago, the amount of time that has elapsed since their fall might be a useful thing to keep track of. http://www.geocities.com/leaves_or/twocents.txt |
| WizO_Iyala07-28-03, 05:04 PM | What matters is scale rather than details. If we consider things in terms of a human's life span, an elven live span, an ETR lifespan, a Shalendae lifespan or several times any of those, that's waht really matters. We don't need to put a value on a year, a day, count seasons or the stars to give an intuitive idea of how long ago a certain race lived. If we're talking about different levels of technology the principles of it and the continuity between different civilizations is what matters, we can pin down the centiuries afterwards. |
| Oops07-29-03, 03:03 AM | I believe we should keep track of years (even if we don't decide how long they are until later), since it is a nice standard that many civilizations would keep track of. Even if the starting dates are different, the year is the same throughout the world. There is no reason to be creative with the calendar; the easier it is for us to get used to and to work with, the better. |
| Jaerc08-01-03, 03:59 PM | Yes I know this is going to sound over cliched but...what can you do. Anyway How about Ages . Every Age is 1000 years no matter what earth shattering events occur. The Time of the ERTs would be BA time (Before Ages). From there we have a way to divde large spans of time. Well thats all I can think of now , I trust someone will run with the idea. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-12-03, 05:51 PM | The reason a creators calender isn`t working is because we have no historical events as far as I can see. P.S. Nobody has ideas about Ages? |
| Leaves08-12-03, 06:40 PM | There's nothing wrong with "Ages", although I can't see why we shouldn't just call them "millenia". First millenium, second millenium, 35th millenium, whatever we need. Actually, calling them Ages might be confusing, later on, when people start talking about historical Ages in flavor-text. I think one of the important steps for a calendar is figuring out how long each of the races live. It's easy to understand how much change and history can be included in 1000 years of human history, because it's the same as real-life history. But 1000 years would only be like 500 years to a dwarf (? for example), etc, so should there only be the equivalent of 500 years of historical change in dwarven history? I don't think I'm explaining this very well. I hope you understand what I mean. :P |
| Obsidianjaerc08-12-03, 08:43 PM | Yes I agree with Leaves . I think that is more reasonable than my idea. I am going to start an race lifespan thread now. Leaves |
