Darksteel Island is a huge island seperated by many, many miles of sea. It is distant from most places, which is good! Darksteel Island looks good in theory when you get to it, a gem for those hunting precious metals. The island has a few trees littered around the edges, and a few dense canopies throughout the rest of the island. The ground has mixtures of sand, soil, and rock. What makes the island really famous, however, is the darksteel! Darksteel, when hardened, is indestructable. Not even magic can penetrate this precious, jet black metal (though magic can still be added to it while its still in its liquid form). Everywhere throughout the island are darksteel 'caves'. These are essentially mines filled with a lot of hardened darksteel. This hardened darksteel, however, cant be reshaped in any way, as it is indestructable, and therefore, can be pretty useless to adventurers, magic users, and the like. There are a few rarer spots, with constant pools of liquid darksteel, such as deep down within the caves, and deep within the dense forest canopies. It is these pools which entice adventurers to come to this island, as these pools can be used to make weapons and armour out of darksteel. In the very centre of the island, is the mysterious darksteel citadul. No one knows what lives there, and it cannot be teleported into. It must be entered manually. Only fools come to the island unprepared though, as roaming the island are creatures made of the stuff! These creatures are, like the metal, indestructable. The only way to stop them is by completely immersing them in water. This will snuff the life force out of them until they are dry again. And thats the good reason the island is conveniently seperated from the rest of the world. And the reason no darksteel creatures are found outside darksteel island. Creatures made out of darksteel are 4x heavier than what they should be for their size, and if they try to swim, they automatically sink.

Making Darksteel Items

To make a darksteel item, you must be on darksteel island, using a pool of liquid darksteel. Darksteel items are automatically considered masterwork when they are made. These darksteel items, when made, cannot be destroyed.

To make a weapon out of darksteel, add the following prices:
Light XXXXX gp
One-Handed, or one head of a double weapon XXXXX gp
Two-Handed Weapon, or both heads of a double weapon XXXXX gp

Darksteel weapons do damage as if they were one size category larger.

To make armour out of darksteel, add the following prices:
Light Armour XXXXX gp
Medium Armour XXXXX gp
Heavy Armour XXXXX gp

Because darksteel is inpeneterable, light darksteel armour gives its wearer DR 10/-, medium DR 15/-, Heavy DR 20/-.

To add magic to a darksteel item, the magic must be added at the time of creation. For example, you could add a +1 bonus and a +1 enhancement at its creation. But, if you didnt add more, and the weapon hardens, you can no longer add any other magical bonus to that item. Darksteel weapons and armour weigh double the amount of their normal counterparts.

Darksteel liquid hardens a little when taken 5 feet away from its pool. This is sufficient enough to craft the item while it is in a semi solid shape. If moved any further away than this, it will cool and become indestructable in 5 rounds.

Any darksteel item is generally not available to the public unless the DM allows it. A player character must craft it herself.

I shall post the darksteel monsters later. Any suggestions for the pricing would be good.

This place sounds pretty hostile, but very vague. All you've told us is that there are caves (which suggest that there are hills or mtns.), pools of darksteel, darksteel monsters, and a few trees. That doesn't really say too much about the island's physical features.

Also, where is it located? Is it close to any deserts or not? Or is it closer to cities?

How does the metal stay in its liquid form while there are hardened caves made out of it? Is there some kind of immense heat factor (volcano, magical fire, etc.) that keeps it warm and bubbling like the adamantium in x-men?

one more thing: Indestructible? Is it some kind of super-enchanted metal, because, although I can believe it can't be penetrated by brute force, but magic penetrates anything non-enchanted. But shouldn't darksteel be able to penetrate itself, since it is as hard as itself?

It is located far from civilization 1000 miles south.

Normally it is quite temperate on the island, being sunny for the most part. However, during the night, high winds pick up and flow through the island.
Upon certain edges of the island, there are tall cliffs. It is always windy on these cliffs and the winds can sometimes be enough to knock medium creatures off their feet and send them plummeting to the sea below, which always bashes with heavy waves against the cliff.
There are indeed hills and mountains, which cover a lot of the island. The sand which i spoke of is near the shore, and in barren terrain, more like wastelands then deserts.

So, the island has 4 main terrain features:
Around the edges there are great cliffs with strong winds. Also near the shore are tree's, which become dense canopies in some area's of the island and are known to grow on the hills and mountains. Hills and mountains cover a lot of the island, with many caves full of hardened darksteel. And then theres the wastelands, normally surrounding the hills or mountains. Nothing grows there.

The whole island is right above a geothermal hot spot in the sea, which is what causes the darksteel to remain in its liquid form.

Locations of the pools:
In the caves. There is no garuntee that you will find a pool if u venture into a cave (it is dark, there might not be one in there, or it is hard to navigate), but, if you do, it will be somewhere near the very bottom.
Deep within the forest canopies. Also hard to find, as you could go around in circles in a forest.
In the wastelands.

The pools are most common in the wastelands, and you will always find at least one if you search hard enough.
The pools are less common in caves or in forests, but, the monsters in the caves and forests are far less dangerous than the monsters in the wastelands.

There are three types of darksteel monsters that roam the island:

Darksteel Brutes. These fellows inhabit the caves.
Darksteel Gargoyles. These fellows inhabit the forests, mountaintops and hilltops. Their wings fail to function if they attempt to fly over water.
And last but not least, the Darksteel Collossus. These creatures roam the wastelands. As their name suggests, they are big, collossal in fact.

In x-men, adamantium couldnt destroy adamantium. If darksteel could penetrate itself, there would be no point in calling it indestructable :) .

The reason that spells cant penetrate it, is because darksteel is so reflective, that the spells just bounce right off.

Darksteel Island is a huge island seperated by many, many miles of sea.

Huge Island . . . On what scale is it? Do we have a mini-continent in the middle of a sea? Why no ocean? does the presence of darksteel on the island prevent the formation of large, deep bodies of water?

IDEA : The darksteel, more than being indestructible, manipulates energies in a way that it prevents the movement of geological plates beneath the surrounding area, so that the lithosphere becomes stagnant and oceanic trenches cannot form.

It is distant from most places, which is good!

Well, what places is it not distant from? Does it matter that a location is ever so slightly closer to Darksteel Island, or do the boundless seas negate any effect from the Darksteel?

If Darksteel Island were to be shifted in location, what would some negative effects be (assuming that Darksteel Island being distant is good)?

Darksteel Island looks good in theory when you get to it, a gem for those hunting precious metals.

Is it widely published that Darksteel Island contains these windfalls? Are they all hidden, or condensed in the caves, so that prospectors cannot simply raid the shores?

Specifically, what gems are to be found? Do they interact at all with the darksteel?

The island has a few trees littered around the edges, and a few dense canopies throughout the rest of the island. The ground has mixtures of sand, soil, and rock.

How did the forests of Darksteel Island originate? It being surrounded on all sides by lengthy stretches of sea, it would be difficult for seeds to travel to and fro.

IDEA : The life on Darksteel Island, though it appears to be similar to that found elsewhere on this world, is composed of utterly alien materials, a.k.a. Darksteel.

What makes the island really famous, however, is the darksteel! Darksteel, when hardened, is indestructable. Not even magic can penetrate this precious, jet black metal (though magic can still be added to it while its still in its liquid form).

Does darksteel, other than blocking conventional magic, also diffuse riz/ira aligned magic? psionics? truename, shadow, incarnum, pact magic also?

IDEA : At what temperature does darksteel enter gaseous form? Is this temperature attainable is our world? If so, could one inhale vaporized darksteel and die as the darksteel solidifies? This would be quick, and the solidifying darksteel would be immune to magical methods of removing it.

Everywhere throughout the island are darksteel 'caves'. These are essentially mines filled with a lot of hardened darksteel.

Is there any pattern to the location of these caves? How deep would they be, and at what angle? Is there any danger of falling to your death within a cave?

Filled? Would these caves be clogged up by the darksteel? does darksteel solidify as pebbles and rocks, or as a large mass taking the shape of its container?

This hardened darksteel, however, cant be reshaped in any way, as it is indestructable, and therefore, can be pretty useless to adventurers, magic users, and the like.

As for non-adventuring uses, is Darksteel considered a precious substance in the world beyond? On what degree is its value as a solid realized?

Is there any special ceremony relating to the darksteel, and how would average citizens react to the presentation of darksteel?

There are a few rarer spots, with constant pools of liquid darksteel, such as deep down within the caves, and deep within the dense forest canopies. It is these pools which entice adventurers to come to this island, as these pools can be used to make weapons and armour out of darksteel.

How deep exactly would the liquid darksteel be found? Why does geothermic action cause some of the darksteel to be liquid, and the rest not?

Are there pits within the canopy, or is there some other reason that the forest darksteel also partakes in the geothermic hotspot's energy? Why couldn't someone simply set the forest ablaze, and then seek the liquid darksteel among the ashes?

In the very centre of the island, is the mysterious darksteel citadel. No one knows what lives there, and it cannot be teleported into. It must be entered manually.

Is the darksteel citadel, as its name implies, forged entirely of darksteel? That would explain the prevention of teleportation (magic).

What are the features of the citadel? Does it appear to be natural or artificial, and is it hollow or full?

Only fools come to the island unprepared though, as roaming the island are creatures made of the stuff! These creatures are, like the metal, indestructable. The only way to stop them is by completely immersing them in water. This will snuff the life force out of them until they are dry again.

Are these creatures natural life or constructs? If natural, what do these creatures metabolize, if much of their surroundings are by definition indestructible? If construct, what sparked the intelligence in these beings? Do they have a creator, a purpose?

Why does water affect the darksteel creatures so spectacularily? Will non-liquid forms of water provide similar effects? if so, why haven't the creatures all de-metabolized because of water vapour in the air?

And thats the good reason the island is conveniently seperated from the rest of the world. And the reason no darksteel creatures are found outside darksteel island. Creatures made out of darksteel are 4x heavier than what they should be for their size, and if they try to swim, they automatically sink.

Is natural, normal life also found on Darksteel Island? Have they migrated here, or away, in ages past? Can darksteel creatures wade through pools, and fly through clouds without sinking?

Looks nice

IDEA : The darksteel, more than being indestructible, manipulates energies in a way that it prevents the movement of geological plates beneath the surrounding area, so that the lithosphere becomes stagnant and oceanic trenches cannot form.

Not quite a mini-continent, but fairly close. To be honest i said a sea because I didn't know that a sea was smaller than an ocean. So, an ocean would be fitting. I like the idea, but, that would now imply non-oceanic water^^.

I dont know what places it isnt distant from, our whole world hasn't been created yet, or are we just creating our own worlds?

Right, the reason its good that darksteel is seperate from everyone, is because the darksteel creatures want nothing more than to leave the island and cause havoc. Since they are indestructable, they would be pretty hard to stop.

Is it widely published that Darksteel Island contains these windfalls? Are they all hidden, or condensed in the caves, so that prospectors cannot simply raid the shores?

Specifically, what gems are to be found? Do they interact at all with the darksteel?

Ah, when I said that it was a gem, I meant it as in, the island is viewed as a great place. Like, for example, a sword can be a real gem to someone. What do you mean when you say windfalls?
Darksteel is not found on shores, but, gemwise, there could be gems growing on the trees (I'll explain in a later quote).

Darksteel.
Now here you have given me an idea. A very good idea. There will be more on this idea in a further quote.

The trees themselves are twisted an alien like, but still retain some semblence of the material world. It is as if the seeds originated from the far realm...some trees grow gems on them, but they attack all who try to take them.

Ah, i see what you mean, turning the liquid into a gas. However, darksteel is not immune to magic until it has fully solidified. But, as a special weapon, I can see something here.

Going to a pool of darksteel, you apply a certain magic to some of the liquid to keep it hot enough to remain in its liquid form and store it in a container.
Maybe a new spell, called, Maintain Temperature, lvl 1, being permanent, but the caster can dismiss it.
Darksteel liquid cannot attain gaseous form while in the normal world, as the normal world does not have anywhere that can supply a high enough temperature. But, with a trip to the plane of fire, travelling to its hottest parts, one can achieve making darksteel gaseous.
This can then be used as a grenade like weapon if stored in the appropriate container, and will dismiss the spell when the container hits the target and smashes open, causing him to die a quick death.

Again, it is hard to make this, but possible.

Because the geothermic hot spot is a hotter spot than usual, sometimes eruptions occur. These eruptions are what fill the caves with their hardened darksteel. Normally such eruptions solidify darksteel in the form of rocks and pebbles, but, darksteel can solidify in the shape of a container.
There is no pattern to the caves at all, and there is certainly a danger of falling to your death in some of the bigger caves.

As for non-adventuring uses, is Darksteel considered a precious substance in the world beyond? On what degree is its value as a solid realized?

Is there any special ceremony relating to the darksteel, and how would average citizens react to the presentation of darksteel?
I don't know yet, any ideas?

How deep exactly would the liquid darksteel be found? Why does geothermic action cause some of the darksteel to be liquid, and the rest not?

Are there pits within the canopy, or is there some other reason that the forest darksteel also partakes in the geothermic hotspot's energy? Why couldn't someone simply set the forest ablaze, and then seek the liquid darksteel among the ashes?

Ok, darksteel liquid in caves will be found very deep down.
Setting the forest ablaze would be a very bad thing, as it is the home of the darksteel gargoyles there. Trying to do so would alert them and cause them to attack you. Unless you can withstand 30 indestructable creatures at once, then its best not to try. Plus, some trees can fight you back;)
I'd also say there are pits.

Is the darksteel citadel, as its name implies, forged entirely of darksteel? That would explain the prevention of teleportation (magic).

What are the features of the citadel? Does it appear to be natural or artificial, and is it hollow or full?

It is indeed forged entirely of darksteel, and why i said prevention of teleportation. Near the top of the citadel, there is 1 belcony. This would suggest that it may be occupied. It is fairly large, and has a collossal sized double door at its base, so a bit more than fairly large then. There are a few windows here and there, but they can be bolted shut. It is definately artificial.
It is rumoured that there is a permanent portal to the far realm, which is where this darksteel came from, and it is the darksteel citadel which stops the waves of insanity from spreading. Fortunately, if the doors were to open, the insanity would not reach any civilized people, being so far away from community. If the island were to be shifted to a closer location though, and the doors did open, waves of insanity would crash over many innocent people. This would also explain the twisted nature of the landscape, as it would have no doubt infected the land before the citadel was built. No one can fathom how it was built. It is also rumoured that this is where the darksteel creatures come from.
(Both rumours are true)

What can one find in the citadel? Perhaps the secret on forging darksteel buildings, or perhaps the secret of overcoming darksteel, or even the secret of indestructability. It is up to the DM to decide.

They are constructs, and are considered awakened, due to coming from the far realm. This means they have a concience and free will, and intelligence.
Only actual water that touches a darksteel creature will work, so water vapor wont work. Magic which creates water also works against darksteel creatures, which is the exception to darksteel being immune to magic. As for the reason that water effects them so spectacularly, i don't know yet. Any Ideas?

Expect to see some creatures tomorrow.

Interesting.

Lets see what we have here -

Creepy hard to get to island - good.
Filled with indestructable monster constructs - double good!
Giant indestructable tower... umm... curious.
The potential for great profit.. and dire consequences... EXCELLENT!

I really like the idea of Gemstone Trees! They shouldn't be horribly valuable though. Just to offset the commonality (well they are only 100gp value rubies.. but I got a bush full of em! )

.... first problem - ecology? I assume there are non-indestructable animals for the indestructable animals to eat? I mean they don't have to be constructs .. well maybe they have to be constructs... yeah they probably should be constructs if they are made entirely of metal.. but they don't have to be constructs. This begs the question of :

How much "destructable" ecology is there on the island?

Another question - how are you supposed to defeate these things? Run? is that the only option? Can charm spells stall them? Can you Handle these indestructable Animals? As constructs would they have "usage" rules for like disable device or use magic device?

Its very interesting as far as a "story" setting to have undefeatable monsters that get to run your main characters around - but playing in such a place.. can be frustrating.

Now - this citidale... hmm. Where did it come from? What is it for? Who is it for...

What if there were "gods" that came down and used the Darksteel Temple specifically for the creation of these darksteel beasts? That would indicate that these creatures are used in petty god wars... thats an idea.. OR! Maybe an arcane collective meets there to craft an ever growing army of indestructable monsters that they one day plan to unleash upon the unsuspecting world!

:D eh?

And regarding the "general populace" darksteel should be as rare as the mythical adamantiumTM (not adamantite thats actually relativly common). It should be almost unrecognizable to anyone but master crafters. Anyone else would probably mistake it for a magic sword.

Darksteel Brute
These creature appear to look like savage beasts, with spikey fur covering their body, a large, 'furry' tail, menacing claws, and a maw like that of a bearr, tiger or other such animals.
In truth, this fur is spikes that damage opponents when hit with them.
Darksteel Brutes live in the caves of Darksteel Island, and in the far realm, and have adapted well to live there. Not only are their claws menacing, but they allow the creature to climb any rock-like surface - even a vertical wall. They are living constructs, their spirit inside them awakened, giving them intelligence, a will of their own, and a conciousness. While this would normally leave them vulnerable to mind effecting effects, being made out of darksteel renders them immune to magic. They want nothing more than to get off the island to visit the rest of the world, where they will cause as much havoc as they can. A darksteel brute has no hit dice, as it is indestructable. Darksteel Brutes speak Darksteel and common.

COMBAT
While a darksteel brute does like to attack things, it does have some intelligence. If it sees a newcomer, it will approach it and ask if it can provide a way for it to leave the island. If they don't, it attacks.

Darkvision : A Darksteel Brutes darkvision extends as far as it can see.

Magic Immunity : A Darksteel Brute is immune to any spell or spell-like ability. In addition, any spell or spell like ability that creates water slows (as the spell) a Darksteel Brute, with no saving throw. Natural water also has this effect.

Indestructable : A Darksteel Brute is indestructable. It cannot take damage. The only way to kill it is to submerge it completely in water. This snuffs its life force out until it is dry again. You can use a wish or miracle to keep its life snuffed out whilst its submerged.

As for the gem tree's, I'd make it so that anyone with a high enough skill can find the seeds of the tree that has the gems on it, and take them home and plant them. Maybe infusing the seeds with magic so that when the trees grow, they would let their owner pick the gems off.

There may be natural animals in the forests and insects and such, but thats about it. The only threatening things on the island are the 'alive' trees and the constructs.
Around each pit with darkstteel liquid in a forest, there are several alive trees. These trees dont have gems, but they find the darksteel soothing to be near, and will attack all who try to take any.

The citadel, as i've said before, is mysterious...No one knows how it was built, no one knows what it is for.

It certainly is rare for "general" populace, which is why i stated in my first post it should not be available to the public unless the GM allows it. Whatever darksteel you want, you must get from the island.

yip! Zowie and Kazam! That looking good! :shifty: my roomates arn't around and I am using their computer. I just wanted to respond to the thougts real quick before I actually activate math and look at the game balance of the darksteel beast. Probably have some cards for you in a "second" or two.

Yes, this stuff is the thing of legends of course. I mean its latest block right? Darksteel fortress sounds right... hmm.. (you do that beastie yourself? ) nice... uh yeah - but I imagine that there would have been legendary warriors that were said to have darksteel weapons (and even fewer who actually did eh? ;) but by and far its a once in a lifetime event.

By once in a life time I mean most people might see one. In the possesion of a king. In a museum, something. Some people of course never leave home, but anyone who "gets around" would theoretically have seen one in the possesion of some very particular. Thats how it becomes the stuff of legends. "The High Lord of the Hinterlands, holder of the darksteel saber.. yayada."

or do you think it should be more along the lines of "ancient lost weapons" excalibur, masamune, etc. Remember the world is a high magic setting. For our purposes it would be nice to have darksteel available to the players and stuff. Really that is what sets the cost. How often does it come off the island. How does it come off the island.

Who is making these darksteel beast!?!? (and don't say "Iam" buster - I know that)

I prefer the top paragraph, belonging to a king or something, not ancient lost weapons. It comes off the island as often as people venture out to the island to get it ;)

Maybe when water hits the metal it loses its indestructible qualities for a second or too, which scares the creatures, because that means that they could die.

Also, WHO DID THOSE PAINTINGS??? They're really good and I'd like to know, my being a sketch artist and all.

Undernetter suggested water, but in general that idea sounds interesting....

What if there was some sort of condition that made the darksteel creatures vulnerable to normal damage? That would make them better challenges to the D&D side.

I mean "a wish" will get ya where you need to go, but something short of wish... water might be too simple.. but .. hmm.. have to think about that.

Water blast - thats pretty rough... hmmm.. considering Darksteel...

The thing is that darksteel is a "indestructable" metal - ala M:tG current paradign. We could say that this is WCP DarksteelTM or we could say its standard darksteel.

If its WCP Darksteel we would have to define it in some way similar to this:

WCP Darksteel provides protection from Red, Black, White, and Green. (leaving blue/water weakness).

Or we could leave Darksteel as Darksteel and add some sort of "special death" senario for the creatures in their D20 stats "Water Allergy" (or something) that either kills them outright or acts like a suffication effect.

As far as the M:tG caveats that would have be something like .. well.. er - I thinking this would have to be either some sort of casting proscription like: Cannot be played if you control an Island - or a more complicated "indestructable override" that allows certain forms of blue spells.. like "can be removed from game by blue spell" eh?

IDEA: Yes, the darksteel creatures know enough not to venture out to sea now, but as they aren't extremely adaptable, it took a good time for the creatures to realize that.

Thus, there could be inactive, nulled darksteel creatures lying dormant in the seas around darksteel island. maybe even hordes that fell in ala buffalo stampede?

If so, then could one tap into these dormant resources? study the darksteel creatures without getting too close to a live one? maybe mass awaken them to cause mayhem in the enemy's nation?

If darksteel is common to the extent that many kings possess darksteel objects, then couldn't powerful lords also have darksteel creatures as pets? caged trophies?
