| crustbucket12-04-03, 08:51 PM | first of all, i'm not sure if this is the right forum for this but i figured that writers should be able to come up with names, after all they have to for their stories. anyway if this is the wrong place, let me know where the right one would be if you could. i need names for my own campaign but i am horrible at making them so i ask for your help. i need names for npc's, cities, places, things, basically everything. thanks for the help. |
| The Well12-05-03, 01:56 AM | The coolest names are the ones that are descriptive. For example, a city that is filled with immoral inhabitants might be named "Sodom", or "Gomorrah", or even "Babylon". Read up on literature to find appropriate names. If you want help here, it would be nice if you describe your world and cities for us. |
| armnaxis12-05-03, 02:52 PM | names? hell, with ease. A) tips: 1) other languages. they provide nice, handsome names, that somehow sound familiar, but somehow weird. just pick up a (french, spanish, german, japanese, ..., zulu) diccionary. there are several in the net. 2) mix up and change known names. Jonatan becomes Anathan. Or, mixed with James, ist Jonamès. or Jatan. or... 3) Intonation. lidDA instead of LID-da. merCUry instead of MERcury. 4) I prefer inventing completely new ones. Its fun, and I think it can be trained to a certain degree. But I admit, it doesnt come easy sometimes. Alarama. Turrin. 5) They are not new, though nice: Names from tales, legends, myth. Hecate, Goddess of Death... 6) Try to use names of places and sites, especially foreign and lesser known ones. pick up an atlas. Dorfenstein. Tartu... B) examples: Nuran, Elomes, Fum, Gorak, Lesh, Alkare, Darstalanafumbril, Errohin, Liz Kandar, Andragon, Quaston, Merrit, Gola, Zuela, ... (2 min recreation. want more? np, just give a notice.) |

| Fairfeather12-08-03, 12:59 PM | Well, there's myriad name generators scattered about the internet. The following are also helpful... + Baby name sites, especially the more exotic names...you can use them to generate roots, which you can vary to create new names. For example, the Russian girl's name "Sinya" works as-is, though one could change it just a little and get Ninya, Silya, Sinta, etc.... http://www.20000-names.com/ is a good one. + Anagram generators. Look at EGG...not the best at coming up with names. ;) The name 'Zagyg' isn't just a coincidence. Just move a few letters around, and presto. http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/ is helpful, too. |
| nigirimeshi12-31-03, 01:14 AM | Play off the descriptions. Make ironic sounding names. My campaign world has a dark, secret island where rituals are performed that even the dragons and mightiest hengeyokai or yuan-ti mystics don't know about. I named it Isla Lumyl. Sounds like an island of light, but it isn't. |
