So... here's the deal. I am making a world of "Tolkien" proportions, and I need help. Any advice will be thankfully welcomed.

Usually, when making a good world, you want a simple, uncomlicated, but all together great history of the world. what i do is make a timeline. Also, you want the history of races. Because races have a whole different outlook depending on the setting. I dont have a good example, because i mostly use forgotten realms, but theres definatly a difference. And leave space for heroes in your timeline. Dont add to many great and powerful Npcs, because you want the players to shine.:)

First Dritz don't rock. :P but as I was saying.
You go to your account page and there should be an Avatar thing on the side.

Do not! Go giving out advice. Questions liek these are supposed to be answered with a redirect. "Start with a timeline" what silly suckatash is this? he needs to find his way to the Champaign advice forum or as I have decided.. he should go to CoCo and get their advice on the matter.

CoCo players are uber 1337, they know everything.
And please! Before doling out advice on this forum .. I beg youto learn what is supposed to be going on here.
Thank you.

Read the sig. Follow instructions. Nuff Said.

Tolkein.

Halflings, Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Goblins, Orcs, and Half-Orcs. Those are the only races. The only monsters are demons. Move along...

So... here's the deal. I am making a world of "Tolkien" proportions, and I need help. Any advice will be thankfully welcomed.

Start with designing one adventure which includes one typical village or town. Ask your players what characters they want to play.

Then ask questions and answer them: How did the village/town get its name? Why are there monsters/villains in the area? Where do the PCs come from?
The list can be almost endless as one answer causes new questions. Let us assume the village is called Isgard's Ford. You will need a river. What does Isgard mean? Answer: Ice-Guardian. Was there a battle against ice creatures? Or was it simply founded by a hero with that name? Was the guardian maybe an ice creature guarding against something else?

If you answer enough questions for a small area it will evolve into a world as the small ties into the big ;)

Just take the real world: Essex, Sussex and Wessex in Great Britain tell of the Saxon invasion East Saxony, South Saxony and West Saxony... English came from a German tribe: Anglish etc

You see that you only have to look around and the whole world will reveal itself.

P.S.: Do not be affraid to steal from the real world Tolkien did as well. ;)
