At the North Pole:

The skys are constantly lit with a radioactive, green-white substance , commonly known as Rizwil, constantly emitted from fungi living deep within the ground. Often found flying through the air are clans of Lyrn, cousins of the dragons that reside elsewhere on the planet, but mutated by the Rizwil. Features of the Lyrn include a jawline that continues down through the neck and torso, two spines, separated by a through space spanning the back and torso and various natural, puncture wound-like formations, three extremely short limbs from which emit the hunting call of the Lyrn, and overly large wings that are attached to the rest of the body and constantly covered by a film of unearthly light metal.

On the ground below, random cracks constantly open and close, always bringing out more Rizwil. Here, smell is negated by the scent of newly melted metal, sight is negated by condensed Rizwil pockets, and hearing is negated by the clanging together of pieces of metal underground, echoing through the chasms. One of the only life forms that can survive in these conditions is the Acca Petal, obtaining nourishment directly from the Rizwil. Large colonies of smokestack-like formations constantly belch out Acca Petal 'spores,' the small, aerial larvae of teh Acca Petal. these spores fly throught the air for about 5 days, until its internal Rizwil combustion 'engine' fails. In the meantime, the spores, essentially flying jaws, attempt to find and latch onto any livng organism in the air. Once they do, the spore injects its 'teeth' into the host and begins its parasitic stay, constantly saping the host of blood and flesh as it develops into a formation completely surrounding a section of the host such asthe neck or limb. When the host finally dies, the now grown 'collar' releases from the host and flys away until it finds a suitable spot for it to grow. Then, the flying collar spits out the 'eggs' that have been growing within it along with the rest of its internal organs, leaving a dead shell. the eggs will slowly burrow deep into the ground and, using the 'hive mind' that connects all eggs spawned by a single Petal, grow together into another colony of Acca smokestacks

Rizwell, scary.

Radioactive, little bit neo-postmodern.

type - Summon Lyrn Dragon

stat ?/?
defense alot id think, constantly surrounded by metal!
attack, I get the idea that they would be not the fiercest dragons, but mean bastards. Their jaw is .. part of their chest? Freaky!

Artist!

Would they have polyelementalism issues?
Breath weapons.. oooh ohhh slimy green goo, mutational, wild magic breath, mystic acid? The Arcane Acid Fog of Rizwell, Patermutandis of the Lyrn Dragon. The very mule-eye of the unnamed world. Flatulently producing twisted dragon kind and flying man eating plants! Do the acca eat on the Lyrn?

Welcome to WCP, Rny2.

They should.

This is some interesting stuff Rny2. What if the thought of only the Acca Petal plant/spore/hive-colony things being 'one of the only life forms that can survive in these conditions' is changed to 'the only life form that /thrives/ in these conditions'. It opens the door a little to have some half-breed or mutated type races (Rizwil orcs, Rizwil subspecies, etc.) that can tolerate the Rizwil (toxic substance - be it naturally or magically oriented). Sort of groups that live on the fringe of this strange North Pole environment for this world, they can stand some of the Rizwil, but the environment around the smokestakes themselves is toxic (not to mention dangerous with the Acca Petal beasties that thrive the best around them). That is, over exposure to the substance is lethal, but not too toxic in the right doses for the half-breed types living on the rim of this ecosystem.

I really like the clanking of metal that is always heard in the environment as well. Maybe something interesting is taking place in the underrealms (underdark/deepdark etc.) of the North Pole as well?

I like the idea of the Lyrn. Perhaps as these exist around the world, this one should be the Northern Lyrn. I like the concept of the combination of :b: :g: for this region. Deadly, yet some few species do survive here fits that well. In D&D terms it makes sense for the toxic environment with some species living within (such as a Rizwil template that could be applied to virtually every creature, like the Lycanthrope template or Vampire templates).

I'd go with :b: :g: - Summon Lyrn Dragon as a 1/2 flying creature with the special ability 'Lyrn Dragon gains +1 for every other Lyrn in play'. This plays off the flock/clan mentality described by Rny2 and also makes another valid deck type (such as slivers and such), where other Lyrn would help in game play (when/if we ever develop Lyrn outside of this environment).

Well, I can see condense strands of 'nutritious' Rizwel that is excreted in thin layers by the dying Acca collar to nourish developing Acca eggs. Some Rizwell tolerant race would then seek these Rizwel strands out, kill the eggs before they develop. the condensed Rizwel, more benign than the normal variety, would shelter the race from more harmful radiation.

Sounds alot like a cold Mephidross area. Mirrodin ( Metal plane ) had stuff like this, most races adapted by having metallic growths in their bodies and outside their bodies. So would races living in the hinterland of the toxins be mutated on different levels?

like Humans look all mutated and weird like this

Moriok Rigger
Moriok Scavenger :b: (Rogues) (Home is in Mephidros)
or
Auriok Champion
Auriok Steelshaper
Auriok Bladewarden :w: (Soldiers and Clerics)

or
Vulshok Battlemaster
Vulshok Berserker:r: (Barbarian)

I wonder if the drakes look metallic like that or simply "fleshy"

I would suppose it's similar to Mephidross, but i'd think of more congealed mosses than metal.

About the Hive mind contact... will they use sound or electricity ( something physical) or will it involve magic such as psionics?

Also I think the area should be littered with skeletons of wandering creatures which should be a telltale sign to travellers even from a distance.

How large are the spores? through each progression of their life cycle it would be nice to get an idea of size since some distance a way they might be found away from the North pole.

It sounds like a Necromancy haven to me, having underground communities of inhabitants who have adapted to live there either physically , magically or a mixture of both.

Thats amazingly relevant to normal biology. The natives adapt to the hostile environment by eating the fruit of the plant that fluroushes in the area. So acca would be on your menu, but your on the acca's menu too... hehe!

As far as rizwell types and stuff, template .. definatly. But what about this idea:

The rizwell is spreading! With each passing year it expands farther south. Enchantments, equipment, creatures, and spells with the rizwell feature (not type - feature like fear) expand each other... reminedes me all the sudden of the zerg.. anyway... The lyrn could be the dragon type creature that adds +1, and then there could be cards for acca plants and they could do funky stuff - like "add a poison counter to any creature that attacks you" .. maybe acca plants would be walls. What about a rizwell chieften? Some kind of tap an acca plant to regenerate target creature killed by poison counters.. umm just makin stuff up now.

Whats going on in the underdark is a good question.. is the rizwell "supposed" to be there? is it a mistake of LARian proportions.. is it a LAR? oh oh that could be a way to go to! What about the plot of some specific wizard with a demonic mentality, or is it a.. something I havent thought of yet? Really I think the simple important question is - Is this simply one of the extreem(est) environments of the unnamed world or is it a "problem" that could be "fixed"?

Perhaps, in combination with the spreading Rizwil theory for this region, there could be zones of 'radiation'. For a certain diametrical space around the true pole itself is the red zone of Rizwil, only Lryn and Acca spores/plants/thingies truly survive here at all, and maybe some other alien type lifeforms that live off Rizwil alone (side note, I imagine this region like the volcanic vents in the atlantic ocean). Then there is an orange zone of Rizwil, where half-breed types of creatures live. I'm not familiar with the universe of M:tG, but the races that adapt to the Rizwil, by wearing the moss/infusing it with their bodies, dwell here like the race Tolarian Flare mentioned. Then there is a yellow zone of Rizwil where creatures can live for periods of time without wearing the moss, but death is emminent in the long run. Some of the wildlife has adapted in this region, still not much both on account that it is a polar/tundra region and only a few animals have lived near it long enough to adapt. Then there is a green zone where the yellow zone animals live part time as well. Between yellow and orange zone is where the most skeletal remains are of creatures that die to Rizwil exposure, perhaps even entire villages lie in ruins where some races ventured too far north to establish new homes. The zones aren't specifically defines so much in the world, it is a gradually change through each zone, but gives some ecological divesity to develop in the varying spheres of the Rizwil.

I can see Shea is pushing this somewhat towards the Cascades with the idea of the toxic volcanic ash/Rizwil combination. But perhaps this could be tied into the Hinterlund Expanse I mentioned. The area is dangerous outside their home because the wildlife is indeed Rizwil influenced and more deadly then counterparts to the normal wilds further to the south? Just a thought.

I also like the spreading Rizwil idea and the concept of there being conflict between the natural occuring world and the toxin world inflected with Rizwil. I don't think, from a world creation standpoint, we need to define how to 'stop' the spreading of Rizwil. But from the standpoint of making a fantasy set of cards, D&D adventures and telling stories of this world, it gives potential authors something really pliable to work with.

Also, the LAR concept. Shea and I have bantered a little over the Mad LAR concept, perhaps this could tie into the underground environment as well. Perhaps this growing Rizwil is some mad magic offshoot of the Mad LAR, perhaps the shifting chaotic earth ties into that idea as well.

I really like this idea, it gives rise to incorporating an Aurora Borealis like effect in this world north pole, except that the northern ligthts are actually something real and deadly.

Rizwell vs Radiation - I think that the "magic energy" that radiates from the rizwell moss could simply enough be refered to as "the Rizwell" collectivly.
A- were not dealing with advanced terminological societies (at least not explicitly) and the two are near apart. If you see the rizwell glow - then there is moss nearby. If there is rizwell moss around ... your probably glowing. Without going too much - medium to major transmutational aura (KS: Arcana 23, KS: Nature 15 to identify rizwell from either glow or moss)

I get this very creeping feel about the rizwell. The rizwell infection that Amrein came up with makes me think of the Lyrn dragons being not really dragons (as they are being discussed on the dragonss and colors thread) so much as dragon sub-typed construct/abberations.

OK, this is a bingo bango out my hat Idea, I was writting on something else ( hinterland waste (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=6443586#post6443586) ) and I was just like woah! Hey! Mana/Land stuff - here ya go:

Rizwell Land

A special land type (theres a proper term for that like an artifact land - but a rizwell land) Rizwell Island, forest, etc, etc, etc. And they produce
One mana of the proper color mana
And one point of Rizwell "Mana"

Also - when you have an acca plant - there could varius "acca" flowers that do different things, but the basic "acca root" or just plane acca plant could do this

On your upkeep place an acca counter on a target land. A land with a rizwell counter is considered a rizwell land of type - and function as such.

Rizwell can be treated as colorless mana and serves to power Acca flower and Lyrn Dragon Mana Activated abilities.

Examples -

Acca Spike flower
Summon Rizwell Plant
1 Rizwell = Deal X damage to target creature. X is equal to the number of Rizwell cards in play.

Acca Infection Seeds
Summon Rizwell Plant
1 Rizwell = Place a rizwell charge counter on target creature.
If a creature accumulates a number of rizwell charge counters equal to its attack adds the type rizwell to its description.
If a creature accumulates a number of rizwell charge counters equal to its defense is buried (or what ever "cant be regenerated" is these days).

Acca "charge" flowers
Summon Rizwell Plant
2 rizwell = Place a rizwell charge counter on any card.
If you place the counter on a land that land becomes a Rizwell land.
If you place the counter on a creature-
If a creature accumulates a number of rizwell charge counters equal to its attack adds the type rizwell to its description.
If a creature accumulates a number of rizwell charge counters equal to its defense is buried (or what ever "cant be regenerated" is these days).

ok running out of naming things steam, next!

On the opposite side of the globe, at the South Pole, the living earth cracks open. Here, the largest tectonic plates are only a few miles across, and earthquakes are a constant threat. At the few semi-permanent places where the ground almost ceases to shake, a thick, blood-red growth known as an Iradro ‘molar’ stretches in a column to the nameless heavens. All across, thin but sturdy sheets of ‘Cold Iradro’ stretch in all directions from the Iradro molars, building seemingly planar ‘layers’ over the polar plain. Over the cold Iradro comes a translucent ‘Warm Iradro,’ which continuously melts and refreezes as certain fibres within the Iradro molar tighten and relax, trapping hapless creatures within its grasp. The continuing layers, with more and more exotic shapes to be found within, seem to be endless, but legend holds that, with horrifyingly powerful magic, one can pierce the layers and reach the Iradro ‘root’. When that happens, the old sages say, the essence of It shall pour through and shatter all the layers of Iradro and flood the world over nine times. Now, eight master mages have tried to reach the Iradro root and all have failed, each getting closer and closer. Nine always did hold a dreaded place in the heart of any scholar of the south. Even now, ‘buds’ of callous-like growth have been found on certain areas of the cold Iradro, and at certain times when the warm Iradro falls away, horrifying sounds echo back and forth in the vicinity of these buds.

Even if one only stands to watch a single ‘washing’ of the warm iradro, they can see unnameable things hidden within the growths. Often, these unearthly creatures bespeak of a marine origin, as flappers and fins transpire unanimously from all the half-dead fossils. Other than those, the only native semblances of life are the hideous beings that ‘sprout’ from deep within the Iradro molars and slowly make their way to the Iradro buds, their movement a gesture demeaning of both slithering and crawling. Sized by scholarly mathematicians to be, according to respected calculations, more than fifty meters wide at the least, the red behemoths slowly drag their diseased feelers and distorted limbs to the site of a bud, where they slowly ‘root’ themselves, their ‘roots’ being found miles away as they expand in all directions of the Iradro. When the beast sees that it has grown fit, it ‘flowers,’ expanding its unholy organs to gargantuan proportions unfitting to anything of humanity’s creation. On a day close to the end of the year, when children hide in cellars and crates in their homes, the rooted fiends will explode in bloodless gore, dispersing chunks of its forbidden flesh all across the surrounding plains, and spreading the seeds for a new generation of prophetical beasts.

*Iradro was referenced in the "Let's make a story" thread

This nameless world has gotten alot scarier since you got here.

Rizwell and Iradro... One side of the planet pumping out gassy grassy green-moss like funkiness. And the other now with this serpentine, fibrous, grasping growth.

I like that the Iradro "reaches to the heavens" where as the acacia spreads the rizwell, the Irdadro spreads itself.. and entangles anything that gets in its way .. ooooh.

Bold adventurers could brave the Iradro pole in a foolish attempt to storm the rings of heaven!
