I Am Famine

Hi, i've been thinking of doing this for a few days now so now I have. Every now and again I'll post a new topic or theme to do with this world and anyone can give their ideas and oppinions on the matter. You can always PM me with requested questions which will update as soon as the current questions starts to lose interest, especially if you want MtG-centric questions for I know very little about the game!. The current question is as follows...

1) Should there be unique races alongside the core ones, eg as in Eberron with the Warforged and Shifters? If so what ideas for races do you have?

I think we should have the normal PhB races but make their cultures different depending on the mana color they represent. For the example the Red Elves would be these gruff, stone-serious types who create many quarries and industrial machinery. Many of the other elves (who are less destructive) tend to dislike the Red Elves. Such a culture might be quite expansionist as well. To sum the other elf races...

Red Elves: Industrial miners/machinists/soldiers
Blue Elves: Peaceful coast-dwelling fishermen/hunters/shamans
Green Elves: Wild and superstitous warriors/druids
White: Very civilized and noble knights/philosophers/intellectuals
Black: Cruel and vice-ridden mercenaries/assassins/temptresses

And do the same with the other races, making them distinct from the others of their color. For example Red Dwarves could be berzerker/totem warrior types, whilst green ones might be peaceful and highly lawful arcanists.

By doing that the original core races will be as unique as any new races that crop up. A few of my favorite races here on the WCP boards are the Rekkail and Sprouts(which can be found here) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=388560) which would give the setting a small amount of unhuman heroism. What do you think?. :)

Alternatively we could have entirely new races and leave out the core races entirely and have a group of about 7-9 common races. I personally prefer the afforementioned method with a combination of the two. But if we were to do this there is another thread which has made some brilliant races, namely this one... (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=486678) Note that this thread isn't part of the WCP, so if any of the races were to be included we would need their creators permission.

If I had to decide which races were going to be the core beings of this world then I definately pick...

Rekkail (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5840276&postcount=4) (cricket people)
Sprouts [bottom of page] (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6055342&postcount=7) (small plant people)
Kari (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5578236&postcount=1) (cat-like humanoids)
Brayven (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5648898&postcount=2) (goatish tall humanoids)

It would give the campaign a slightly more fantastical and inhuman edge, so it isn't a bad idea. I would just prefer the option of either playing a PHB race for one of the campains offspring... :)

I suggest we BUMP the Kender entirely... :P

Seriously though come on people. Dont be shy, I know your reading this and thinking 'what a brilliant young mind' ;)

I like the idea of having a thread to bring up ideas each interval, put i would move it to like 2-3 weeks instead of one, didnt have enough time to look over the races, but they sound cool, need names for the elves though. Devkarin work for the black one, lastest book.

Yeah, this place seems to be effected by the moons or the tides or something...

HEY! You like the sprouts! I think the sprouts are nifty.

Hmmm, that reminds me, I was going to make a suggestion for the brayven.

O.Y. "Im back"

YES!
I wouldnt be adverse to getting rid of some of the core races like orc.

There! I edited the thread. Now no one has to worry about the crazy 'once a week' idea that I terrorized Ryn2 with... :P

Thanks for the posts Shea, i'm glad someone liked else like the sprouts. I would definately love to see the Rekkail, Sprouts, Kari and Brayven in this setting, but why no Orcs? Its only because everyone has blatantly overused the Tolkien-esque view of Orcs. Perhaps we shuld revert the Orcs to their original more historically-accurates origins, as mysterious evil fey. Thats how Goblinoid creatures were originally imagined. In another post I suggested that Goblins are often a common, friendly and socialable race that often become traders, experts and explorers.

Liked the sprouts? The sprouts are mine! Of course I like them!

Ohhhh, orc fey. Thats a nifty idea.. with the whole elemental elves thing there... make both elves and orcs both fey - and give all fey types the elemental associatons. - Then we can have mystic elemental races (orc, elf, other? ) and natural non-elemental races (Human, Brayven, etc ) that can have elemental associations but dont have elemental subraces.

heh, sensative about that numeral eh Rny2?

You did?! Guess I should look at who posted what more often... :embarrass :P

I know you suggested on another thread we get rid of Dwarves but how about we take the PHB races (except Humans) as use them for your mystic elemental race idea. Say you took the 5 MtG elementS and applied it to Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, Elves and Orcs. The world like would have 5 mystic and 5 mundane races. Each of the mystic races would have 5 elemental variations, possibly with very obvious elemental features like skin the same color as the MtG element they represent. Green races could have plant-like hair and animalistic features, reds would have firey hair and glowing eyes/mouths, blues would have scaly smooth skin and large expressive eyes, white races would be pale and celestial looking and black races would be twisted and shadowy skinned.

Green/Red/Blue/White/Black Elves
Green/Red/Blue/White/Black Dwarves
Green/Red/Blue/White/Black Gnomes
Green/Red/Blue/White/Black Halflings
Green/Red/Blue/White/Black Orcs
Half-Elves (half human/half elemental elf)
Half-Orcs (half human/half elemental orc)
Humans
Brayven
Kari
Sprouts
Rekkail

That makes a decent bunch of core races. It puts a twist on the core races, still allows half-races to exist, gives humans freedom to have their own background and culture and to top it of we have 4 new races... Its a good idea if you dont mind me saying so!... :D (blowing my own trumpet) If we add another new race each of them might represent one of the 5 elements, which might explain their bizarre and magical appearances. Sprouts would be green, Rekkail white, Brayven red and Kari blue.

What do you think?... :)

So the necrifant dont qualify as a race? Or qualify insomuch as kobolds and goblins do?

I decided to make into a slightly more mysterious Fey race than a core race, they're more like Nymphs or Dryads only slightly more numerous. Heres the new stats... (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7190115)

If we use the idea of 5 elemental core races should they have powers related to their elemental blood, or just an affinity for it and an appearance to match. I'd prefer to see these beings as a non Level Adjustment race.

One of the things about elemental varients is that its pretty easy to make it balanced

Lets take elemental elves for example.
There are already write ups for the kaburi and what not but another simple way to do is to
start with an elf,
remove their save vs. enchantments bonus
remove weapon proficiencies
then ...
add one of the following;
3/day :r: red fingers (deal 1d6 fire damage on touch)
3/day :u: blue palm (heal 1d6 damage on touch)
3/day :g: green thumb (poison DC 10+1/2 con, 1d2 str damage on touch)
3/day :w: white knuckles (+cha to attack or skill check)
3/day :b: black nails (deal 1d6 life drain on touch)
and
one of following;
:r: resist elements fire 20
:u: swim speed 60ft (breath water)
:g: regenerate 1
:w: DR 3/-
:b: immune to magical fear effects

hmmm, yeah that looks pretty simple - but thats what im thinkin along the orcs idea.

What if we took the "orc" title right out? Do a boggart deal or something. Drop "orc" in as "one of the names of a what is properly called a bog-sprite - or something.

Do we have the mental facilities and enough creativity to accomplish that plan, shea?
the_one_true_shea

10-26-05, 10:45 PM
well I dont think there should be elemental subversions of all the core d20 races..

Elves have already been elementalized, and I dont think the halflings, gnomes, or dwarves really need it.

The "orks" though. Orks are a placeholder - and (ala tolkien) orks are an "offshoot" of elves.

So if we have a dark/light fey elf/ork thing. With the elemental elves (basically) as described so far - most importantly their extant cultures :shifty: but for orcs I think the elemental affiliations could be more :fight!: combat related. Whereas the elfs can be all fluffy bunny huggers as far as I am concerned.

The idea of having unique races is a good one, because the idea of having a unique character from a unique race makes the player want it for three reasons:

1) Players like to boast about the cards/characters/items that they own.
2) Players would know the game by the unique races, characters and items that it has.
3) Creativity always sells.

Now looking at how it would affect the game, it would be amazing, imagine all the ideas for stories that could come up with a unique race, you can make villians, very powerful villians, and there cannot be another villian like the first one (if it gets killed) becaused it was unique, and ssame thing with heroes

With signifigant shifts to the base subraces, and a basketful of additional races.. and three "levels" of planet to deal with... I think you could go alot of places. There seems like there would be .. "room" for that without denying consistancy.

See the problem with the elemental races is, everyone is going to have like all the same or simliar abilities, so they arent as versatile, but if you were to give them all unique abilities then that would take some time, so how do you come up with a simple chart to roll on for each race so that they can be random within the races and then be unique as a race on a whole also.

Also, elves are not aligned to anything, whoever said that, they are just bent towards nature, its not like they have to be earth or anything, most normal elves (high elves in D&D) wont be fire for some obvious reasons, but drow on the other hand might because they live underground and could use the heat.

Drow
Most Likely: Earth
Then: Fire
Maybe: Water
rare: Air (all there air would be stale for the most part because it normally recycles through underground plants instead of new air)

High Elves
Most Likely: Air
Then: Water
Maybe: Earth
Rare: Fire (Duh!)

Wild Elves (i think they call them silver elves in D&D)
Most Likely: Earth
Then: Water
Maybe: Fire
Rare: Air

Aquatic
Most likely: (hmmm) water
Then: Air
Maybe: Earth
Rare: fire

and thats how you would do it, the most likely one for a race is going to have more than all the rest, and the rare one having a small amount has birthing a rarely used element for a race does not have much of a gene pool to pick from. I would say 8-9 for a most likely and about 2-3 for rare.
