The Shadowrats, a race of elemental humanoid rat-men. Formerly just rodents, they were warped by Shadow Magic as they fed on the refuse from a thousand battles, and people's preconceptions of them as bringers of disease and causers of strife produced their current form.

Shadowrats

Rats have been known as carrion eaters for many years, and some have, over time, been changed by the shadow magic that battles produce. Shadowrats resemble large, humanoid rats that are covered with a variety of sores, bony protrusions, and mangy, matted hair, which is typically mottled brown and black. They are well known for their mastery of shadow magic, as well as the number of magic items they produce, powered by that magic.

First thing.. "Shadow Rats?" Yer killing me!? :why?:

Shadow Rats simply must be a derogatory term... however considering that they are a "created race" you do have to throw some "normal" societal naming conventions out of the door.

In a real world scenario these things would get "frankenstien" names. People would say "ya know .. those beastmen that {whatshisname} made" - they would refer to the accident, and therby that name would become common referent for "his monsters" ... or better yet they could be .. umm ...

The Tsetsy.
--> Sounds like something a "rat person" could say. Rather than the name they are saddled with.. the name they give themselves? "Translates to..." but sounds like a rat chittering.

Thats my first thought anyhow
