| Kavu Overlord09-30-03, 05:06 PM | What the hey, I'll try a race. Big guess what it is. (Read Title!) Kavu Rex (Ka-voo Recks) Description: Large, reptilian, Tyrannasaurian heads (with the Armor plate on the females) Steel-hard scales, 4 legs, (this is rare), 2 arms ,usually 2 normal-sized arms, 2- normal sized legs Characterisics: Gargantuan, so they suffer -4 on hide and move silently checks However, Their +4 strength and AC ability(+3 Steel-hard scales) makes up for it. Usually 35 feet tall. Usually intelligent Relations: Get along with elves, dwarves, dinosaurs, humans, and that's about it. Personality: Suprisingly, quite laid-back, nice, and likeable. People get startled about this. However, in battle, they are merciless and downright mean! Alignment: Usually Chaotic Good, or Chaotic Neutral. A Kavu Rex has rarely gone to the darkness. Thos are the ones to fear the most. Lands: Forests, mountains, wherever they feel comfortable. They like to hang out with elves. Religon: Kavu Rex follow whatever religon they wish except the ones that are evil. Those who do are promptly removed from the tribe. Language: Common, elvish, Kavu, Druidic They like to speak the first two, but the third is for tribal things, and speaking to Kavu Minorus (another species) Names: Usually elven names, dwarven names, common names. But the Kavu always have a second name that is secret. No one else knows of their Second names. Well, what do ye think of them? |
| nick01200009-30-03, 09:54 PM | If i remember correctly, 35 feet tall is Gargantuan, which imposes a much bigger penalty to hide checks than -2. Your desription of the arms and legs is just confusing. How many legs do they have, 2 or 4? +2 Strength for a gargantuan race is just laughable, no offense. Look at the entry for Tyranosaurus Rex in the monster manual. Look at it's physical ability scores. Now consider this creature is one size category larger than them, if memory serves. BTW, what would their ECL be? |
| Kavu Overlord10-01-03, 04:06 PM | 1.fixed 2.ECL? 3.What monster Manual?! I have no stinking Monster Manual! Help me out here! |
| nick01200010-01-03, 08:57 PM | The Monster Manual is the third DnD Core Rulebook. If you don't have it, here is the SRD (http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=srd35) Read it. ECL is Effective Character Level. It is a number that shows how much more powerful a race is than the default races, in terms of how many charcter levels it is balanced for them to lose. The formulas for calculating ECL's are in Savage Species, a supplement I unfortunately do not own. As far as abilities go, let's take a look at Mr. T-Rex: TYRANNOSAURUS Huge Animal Hit Dice: 18d8+99 (180 hp) Initiative: +1 Speed: 40 ft. (8 squares) Armor Class: 14 (–2 size, +1 Dex, +5 natural) touch 9, flat-footed 13 Base Attack/Grapple: +13/+30 Attack: Bite +20 melee (3d6+13) Full Attack: Bite +20 melee (3d6+13) Space/Reach: 15 ft./10 ft. Special Attacks: Improved grab, swallow whole Special Qualities: Low-light vision, scent Saves: Fort +16, Ref +12, Will +8 Abilities: Str 28, Dex 12, Con 21, Int 2, Wis 15, Cha 10 Skills: Hide –2, Listen +14, Spot +14 Feats: Alertness, Improved Natural Attack (bite), Run, Toughness (3), Track Environment: Warm plains Organization: Solitary or pair Challenge Rating: 8 Treasure: None Alignment: Always neutral Advancement: 19–36 HD (Huge); 37–54 HD (Gargantuan) Level Adjustment: — Despite its enormous size and 6-ton weight, a tyrannosaurus is a swift runner. Its head is nearly 6 feet long, and its teeth are from 3 to 6 inches in length. It is slightly more than 30 feet long from nose to tail. Combat A tyrannosaurus pursues and eats just about anything it sees. Its tactics are simple—charge in and bite. Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a tyrannosaurus must hit an opponent of up to one size smaller with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe the following round. Swallow Whole (Ex): A tyrannosaurus can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of up to two sizes smaller by making a successful grapple check. The swallowed creature takes 2d8+8 points of bludgeoning damage and 8 points of acid damage per round from the tyrannosaurus’s gizzard. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by using a light slashing or piercing weapon to deal 25 points of damage to the gizzard (AC 12). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. A Huge tyrannosaurus’s gizzard can hold 2 Medium, 8 Small, 32 Tiny, or 128 Diminutive or smaller opponents. Skills: A tyrannosaurus has a +2 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks Skills: A tyrannosaurus has a +2 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks Now let's compare with Mr. Kavu Rex: Type: Well, there are several options here. It could be a dragon, a magical beast, or an abberation. Hit Dice: I'd say 18 hit dice at fine. Speed: 40'/round sounds about right. Armor Class: Improving size from Huge to gargantuan increases Natural Armor by 4 (up to +9) but increases the size penalty to AC increases from -2 to -4. Ability scores: Assuming they are built about the same, then because the Kavu Rex is one size category larger, It's Str will increase by 8 (for a total bonus of +26 to Str), it's con will increase by 4 (for a total bonus of +14 to Con), it's dex will remain the same (+2 bonus to dex), and it's mental ability scores will be what? Skill bonuses/penalties: Being a Gargantuan Creature, it will get a -12 penalty to hide checks. A -2 penalty would give the race a bit a flavor, but would not be required. If they have very sharp senses, give them a +2 to Spot and Listen checks. Natural Wepons: Modeling on the T-Rex, and because it is one size category larger, it would deal 3d8+ 1.5 str bonus damage (3d8+20 damage for an average member of the race) Special Attacks: Again modeling on the T-Rex, i assume they will have improved grab and Swallow Whole. However, because it is larger, it would be able to swallow 2 Large, 8 Medium, 32 Small, or 128 Tiny or smaller opponents. Languages: Only the Kavu rex's Druids would be able to speak druidic, as teaching druidic to anyone not a druid carries severe penalties. Not all Kavu Rex's would be able to speak Elven, but maybe make it a language they can get as a bonus language for a high Int. Automatic Languages:Common, Kavu Bonus Languages: Elven, Dwarven, Sylvan, Celestial, Draconic, and possibly Terran and Aquan. Bonus feats: How many feats it will get will depend on what sort of creature it is, a dragon, a magical beats, or a dragon. |
| Kavu Overlord10-05-03, 02:21 PM | umm... it's a beast. It is not any of the things you said. I guess you are right about everything else. |

| nick01200010-05-03, 07:27 PM | The beast type got eliminated in 3.5. All of the mundane beasts became animals, the rest became magical beasts. |
| Mak10-23-03, 10:43 PM | I'll let you guys do the dirty stat work. The only problem I can see is calling them Kavu. This directly links us to Dominaria, and that might become a problem in the future. |
| Mak10-25-03, 12:38 AM | Hey, I have an idea. Since the Kavu originally came from underground, you could place them this world's Underdark! You might have to make them a little smaller though. If you like the idea, you could negotiate with the Underdark creators on my Interaction thread. |
| Kavu Overlord10-25-03, 09:12 PM | Where do i get a link to it? |
| Mak10-27-03, 02:31 AM | Um... they're right here, on this forum. Both of them.:D |
| Mordenkainen's Rubber Duck of DOOM10-27-03, 03:47 PM | Can we have a little more flavour for this race? It's hard to tell what you are making besides "Big Trex Man". |
| Mak10-29-03, 01:48 AM | In Magic, Kavu are creatures bred underground for millennia by Gaea, the world-spirit of Dominaria(their home plane). During the last great war they were released to fight and eat cyborg invaders (Phyrexians) from another plane. They would probably be chaotic good or neutral, being beasts. They are living weapons that eat anything that stands in their way. The problem is integrating them without dragging Dominaria too close to our world. |
| Kavu Overlord10-31-03, 01:59 PM | Ok. Rubber duckie. They happen to be almost all druids. Like I said, They are not exactly the same as kavu! One section of kavu mentality is the rex, and the other is the minorus. They are quite good-natured, laugh a lot, and have quite a good time in any enviornment. They are the nice side of kavu. Minorus are the cruel, evil side of kavu. A lot of them are evil, or are merely weapons for others. THERE! |
| nigirimeshi01-06-04, 09:52 PM | Still, why call them kavu? If they are separate from Dominarian kavu in all but body shape, why call them kavu? Name them something else. Find the language kavu comes from and find a similar word to base the name on. Also, please clarify your English. Is the word "minorus" singular and plural? We, though English-speaking and probably fluent enough to mentally correct bad grammer, can still be confused by words of newness. Some names that will come up on this board are new to us. Please clarify whether these words are singular and/or plural. Also, your racial statistics are incredibly minimal. Here is a suggestion of part of a more fleshed-out(though not as well as it could be) listing(some data has been added to suppliment the rest--it can be changed easily): Description: Large, reptilian, Tyrannasaurian heads (with the Armor plate on the females) Steel-hard scales, 4 legs, (this is rare), 2 arms, usually 2 normal-sized arms, 2- normal sized legs Characterisics: Gargantuan, so they suffer -4 on hide and move silently checks However, Their +4 strength and AC ability(+3 Steel-hard scales) makes up for it. Coming from in forested mountains untouched by any others, the [insert new name here] are a reclusive people, living in isolated nuclear families and on the fringes of other races societies(if at all). Personality: [insert new name here] are distant and have problems interacting with those of other species. However, they enjoy nature and are not so distant to others who care for it. Physical Description: [insert new name here] are similar to the dinosaurs in appearance, however they are far larger, standing up to 10.5 m(yes, I am American, but the Metric system is easier and we should've switched over to it, IMO(no, this wouldn't go in the description, just my opinion)) tall on average. They are fairly humanoid in shape, usually having the standard humanoid set of two arms and two legs, although a rare few have an additional two legs set in front and inward of the natural pair. Their heads are more tyrannasaurian than humanoid, however, and the females have a distinctive patch of extra-thick armor plating on the back of the head. This shape varies depending on the [insert new name here]'s age and birthplace in addition to a number of other factors, providing a wealth of information on the female. Males have a similar feature, but it takes the form of tiny horns lining the edge of the top of the [insert new name here]'s nose. Their scales are steel-hard and turn away most blows, assisted by a network of ridges that turn swords as easily as their scales prevent damage. Relations: [insert new name here] have long lived in the wilderness. Even those who are somewhat integrated into the societies of other races are wary of strangers and grow farther and farther away from the community and it is a rare [insert new name here] that lives closely with others not of its immediate family. They get along fairly well with elves, dwarves and others who live immediately on their borders primarily, while those nearer to general society befriend gnomes and humans. They regard most others with suspicion. They are most friendly, however, to druids and those who regard nature similarily. NOTE: I skipped much in my writing out of the above. I could've easily doubled the length. |
| Amrien06-04-05, 01:56 AM | I've got an idea. Kavu Rex HMMM what an original name (NOT) Kavu, that kinda springs out to MTG players, but how about instead of making it obvious "HEY THEY'RE KAVUS!!" We can instead be clever... and do something like George Lucas did, playing on what we knew in Episode 3. First of all, let's make the "Kavu" part a little less obvious, and call them say... Kavurex As a card, their creature type can still be Kavu, but the trick about the race, is that they don't know it. What were the Kavu summoned for? Why, to defeat Yawgmoth and the Phryxiens, so let's say, that these are indeed the same Kavu, only their DISTANT ancestors. They might still be the same type of creature, but they no longer remember what they were originally meant to do, and have instead, with the purpose for their creation gone, become somewhat more slothful, peaceful beasts. That way, those familiar with Kavu's will be much like the star wars fans with their anakin, going "COOL! KAVUS!". A NEAT kick would be if the phryxiens returned in some incarnation, and their whole past came back and the warrior's blood within them woke back up. Anyway. That's just my little idea of how to add a hint of flavor. |
| the_one_true_shea06-14-05, 06:19 PM | Anything other than Kavu would be better! I dont know if there is a double standard getting thrown around by the D&D racial purists, but dominaria specific races were intended to be avoided... that being said. How much or how little the unnamed world is connected to the outer outer planes (in relation to like Forgotten Realms, Dragon Lance, Grey Hawk, Modern, Future, Star Wars, Dominaria, Warhammer .. wait ... :angelhide ) is still far from decided as far as I can tell. There are already elves, dwarves, gnomes, and dragons that share ubiquitous setting presence. Phryxians and Kender on the other hand are a little more .. PI .. as they say. Kavu could be maybe a harkening to the Dominarian setting - but if so.. well this leads me into a tought that I gonna post on the race and class thread but - If they are actual gaia's protector Kavu from the dominaria setting - they should be some sort of migratory species, brought into the unnamed world by summoning magic more material than gaian. OR .. could go farther.. say that the Kavu/Gaia relationship is inherent... All gaia worlds have their kavu .. eh, theres the rub. I dont know enough about what makes a Kavu a kavu, and more importantly where um .. they come from .. what they are beyond big monsterous thingies.. with sharp pointy teeth (tim) Torian.. (you are so snappy :w00t: would be feasably for you to pull a Kavu collection - I dont knwo how many kavu cards there are - but im mostly interested in legends or ones with good explicative flavor text? |
