| Dark Kurgan08-16-03, 12:25 AM | I already know there's another reptilian race being created on this board, but here's another one that will be fun and twisted at the same time. I've had this race in my mind for years w/o an outlet to put them in. OK, here I go: The Drakar are a reptilian race descended from some type of dragons, and are actually a collection of many, many sub-races (kinda like the Formians in D&D), except their 'core' race (the one every other race is adapted from) is still around and forms most of the high-level positions within their 'hive' which is centered around a big, nasty queen. Here's some of the sub-races so far: The Core Drakar - reptilian humanoids that make elves and dwarves look modest and are vicious warriors. The 'Drakini' - a rodent-sized variant that serves as the 'eyes and ears' of the Hive's Intelligence forces, they spy on other races and even the Drakar themselves. The 'Drakon' - the gorilla-like grunts that form the vast majority of the Drakar armed forces, extremely dim - but incredibly strong and tough. The 'Drakaran' - the elite Drakar, larger than the Drakar, fill most of the royalty's underling positions and are even the 'elite guards' of the Queen herself. Please fill in more, as you see fit. Have fun! |
| Bandido08-16-03, 07:52 AM | Hmmmmm...I like the idea (I've already used it, in fact! Grated minds think alike, huh?), but I need some questions answered, or, at least, some issued need to be cleared up: Do these creatures have a hive mind, or do they stay loyal to their hives by some other means? (loyalty to the queen, magical/psionic possession, genetic imperatives, or something else?) What environment do they live in? Correct me if I'm wrong, but they seem to live in the tropics, making them perfect enemies for the Jerliks, a race we have who dislike lizards. The drakini are rodent-sized - could you be more specific? Are we talking harvest mouse-size, capybara-size, or something in between? Are they aggressively expansionist, or are they content to stay where they are? Otherwise, I realy like these. I'll try to do some stats for them. |
| Dark Kurgan08-16-03, 10:28 AM | Wow, thanks for the response. OK, here are some clarifications from my first post, since I wrote it pretty late lastnight: :b: The Drakar have a very limited hive mind (basic emotions/commands) and their loyalty is basically guaranteed because the race is neuter (except for the Queen and some of the other Royalty). :b: The environment? When I originally created this race, it was for a sci-fi adventure, and they came from a hellish world that made Venus look cold (volcanoes, magma, asteroids), making them most likely a subterranean race (at least in my fragged mind) - but giving them someone to hate other than everyone in general would be a good reason to plant them in the tropics. :b: The Drakini - large rats (about a foot to a foot-and-a-half in body length [with similar length tail]), and they're furry - I forgot to add that. :b: Their diplomatic policies? Their aggressively expansionist whenever they get the feel that they're being threatened by a neighbor, they'll conquer their foes and keep expanding until terrain or another army stops them (kinda like Army Ants), and they keep 'zones of desolation' (hundred miles swathes of carnage, where there are no settlements, and barely any living things) around their hive-compounds as a defensive barrier. :b: Oh, and I forgot something...They have a face-hugger critter they use to enslave other races (imagine a starfish-shaped flap of skin with a hole and two eyes in the middle, and gripping claws on the ends of its 'arms') by clamping onto their faces and sending tentacles up their noses into their brains. Comeon, people add more. |
| nick01200008-17-03, 06:20 AM | Take a look at the Puppeteer in the Psionics handbook. Look familiar? Draknates: The mages of the drakar, and the nobility, these creatures vary in exact appearance, and are divided into 5 bloodlines, one for each of the elements. Dispite their differences, they are all capable of sexual reproduction, although they are sterile in regards to the Draknates of other bloodlines. There is the Water bloodline, whose members are refered to as Waternates, who are kind and compassionate, but when disturbed, they are dangerous opponents. They have bluish scales, and tend to be the healers od the Drakon armies. There are the Firenates, whose fiery tempers and passions hold them in renown for their destructive magic and their art and poetry. There are the Earthnates, whose solid dispositions and slow tempers make them natural magistrates and judges. Their fairness and diplomaticness makes them the bloodline that outsiders are most likely to see. This bloodline handles the disputes between the various other bloodlines. Air draknatesare dreamers, and although they have a loose grip on reality at best, they have a good mind for ideas. Most of the technological progress of the drakons is due to these individuals. The shadow draknates are a shadowy group. They constany strive for change, of all kinds, and are frequently mutated. most have, or have had at one time, a tentacle somewhere. They are typically assasins sent to take out enemy leaders or weided to destroy large troop formation with their twisting magic. |
| Leaves08-17-03, 04:05 PM | How about a scavenger/supply sub-race. They are specialized for picking throught the battlefields after a major battle, picking up all the broken weapons, torn uniforms, anything that could potentially be useful, and turning it into products that can be used by the Drakar. When there haven't been recent battles, they are treasure-hunters, or they raid neighboring towns, or they are miners and craftsmen. What ideas do you have for explaining why the drakar haven't conquered the whole world? If they are so aggressive and powerful, why aren't they everywhere? My idea is that the queens are actually pretty short-lived, and every time a queen dies, the new queen destroys everything the previous queen built, kills all the old armies et cetera, and starts over from scratch with her own children. |
| ICE-T09-02-03, 07:23 AM | coolt! do you play warhammer or something ? the first description reminds me of suarus (core medium) skink (small) kroxigor (the big ones!) don't get this wrong, im NOT trying to say you copy anything just asking if it was kindof a thing like that (apperance and like) cuz it kinda' look like em (in my mind...anyway:-)) The queen-kills-everything-idea might be too dunno what to call it (destructive ehh) my go at why they havent conqueret the world might be they can only live in the tropic land, if they venture in to warm/cold lands they'll boil/sleep all the time due to their coldblooded lizard-nature... just a thought |
| Dark Kurgan09-17-03, 12:04 PM | It's funny, when I first created them, I was inspired by the Shivans from FreeSpace - I just turned 'em into a dragon-race cuz that sounded cooler. The Drakar were sealed off from the cosmos in a dimensional dungeon (along with their homeworld's solar system). An idea for why they haven't conquered the world could be a similar situation, they're an ancient race that was sealed off in a demi-plane that only has tenous contact with the world. Every once in a while they can break through an attack the world, but they have to go back 'home' whenever contact between their home and the world is broken (basically they all are teleported back to their home plane). But there are stragglers left on the world- The Renegades- refugees from the Drakar that have been broken free of their queen's control by being seperated from their prison-home. They are free-willed now and tend to migrate to isolated areas to protect themselves from other groups (who hate Drakar) and the Drakar Scourge whenever it returns. |
