| Frostbite_Ravenheart06-29-03, 10:34 PM | Ok i have one too many ideas for song magic but does anyone have any they are willing to share? I want to see what the general population wants me to create for them related to "song magic" or chants ect...Also i want to see others ideas. After a few replays i will re-edit this post and show my ideas for Song magic combing what i hear the people want and what the people give me. Well thank you in advance and pray tonight that they accept and give me credit for this work in this new world ;) |
| Dream Spinner06-29-03, 11:02 PM | D&D bards already use song magic. But I'd love to hear your ideas. Post those first, and we'll comment/compliment/make suggestions/fall in love with it/hate it with all our fury/make a new religion out of it/take a sledgehammer to your head for even suggesting it and to your family for giving birth to a mind that could even think of it. Sorry if I'm sending you mixed messages. ;) |
| Bandido06-30-03, 11:06 AM | I think that Song magic should be mainly to do with charming people. Anyone with the gift of song magic should be able to lure people towards them in the same manner as a siren. Song magic should also be able to cure people's fear by bolstering their courage, and also scare people with screaming, and even shatter fragile objects! |
| Dream Spinner06-30-03, 01:44 PM | Bandido, isn't the song magic you just described the kind of magic D&D bards already has? If you really want my opinion on song magic, it's that the rhythm, lyrics, and all the other different parts of a song shape the result. Song magic is almost limitless in its possibilities, but is easily messed up. That's what I think. |

| WizO_Iyala06-30-03, 07:41 PM | Song magic is totally air aligned in my opinion. It's too temporary for earth, too blatant for shadow and too calm for fire. It might access some forms or water magic maybe, we haven't pinned down much on water yet. From an MTG point of view it would fit most colors, if it was specificly songs rather than chants it might possibly fit white best or even red perhaps. |
| Dream Spinner06-30-03, 11:11 PM | Song combines all parts of life. There are songs for while working, love songs, dance songs, happy songs, sad songs, songs of epic deeds. Song is temporary (brief jingle), ever-lasting (that "Hush now, my baby" song in Prince of Egypt, never leaving Moses' heart), loud and annoying (Oops, I Did It Again), subtle and heart-appealing (Naked), explosive (lots of possible examples here), calm (lots of possible examples here, too), and everything else. Song is also expression and revealing. Through song/poetry, words unsaid can be spoken, emotions hidden can be shown. For example, see that Buffy musical episode. Giles reveals his thoughts on how he must leave, Dawn reveals her feelings of being invisible, Willow's trickery is revealed, Anya and Xander's doubts about their engagement revealed, Spike's feelings, and Buffy reveals that she was in paradise, heaven, before they brought her back to life, not the hell they thought they saved her from. Everything is revealed.... The beats were kinda cool too. :D Looking back, I didn't really need to give you all those examples, did I? Oh, well. |
| Dream Spinner07-02-03, 03:11 PM | Were my examples so much that you all ran away from this thread? No response at all? |
| nick01200007-03-03, 05:32 AM | sounds like a DnD bard. |
| Dream Spinner07-03-03, 01:12 PM | Originally posted by nick012000 sounds like a DnD bard. Okay, what does? |
| nick01200007-05-03, 04:48 AM | pretty much all of it. |
| Dream Spinner07-05-03, 01:34 PM | Originally posted by nick012000 pretty much all of it. I thought D&D mages were mostly mages that mainly charmed people. Also to create courage or fear and other small stuff. My thought is that song magicks can do almost anything, but only if you make the music just right. For example, a song mage starts to sing to light a campfire. A bear pops out, the mage messes up and instead, a meteor comes down and kills the entire group. Actual song magic wouldn't be that changeable, but it is still a possibility. (Like winning the lottery possiblity. Probably, the fire would instead come up in the wrong place, like the mage's hair.) |
| nick01200007-05-03, 10:04 PM | meh. it's called prestigitation. it's a 0-level spell that can do almost anything, as long as it's nothing important. bards have an ability called bardic song that can inspire courage, inpire competence, plant suggestions, etc. like i said pretty much anything you said is covered by a DnD bard. |
| Dream Spinner07-05-03, 10:12 PM | But I'm saying it can do anything. It could change time, call forth a legion of demons, make a nation vanish, or it could make your soup taste better or the mage look a little nicer. |
| nick01200007-05-03, 10:18 PM | that is called a Wish spell. |
| Dream Spinner07-05-03, 11:28 PM | :twitch:  Fine, think of of song magic as a Wish spell with verbal and/or instrumental components and a high chance of backfiring and creating an effect that is similar, but different in any number of aspects to the desired effect! (I really had no idea how to say what I wanted to say, so it may either sound a very good, or completely baffling in its idiocy. :P) |
| Frostbite_Ravenheart07-08-03, 10:41 AM | I have had NO time to create a song mage spell so i am goning to do a very drastic one on top of my head that is probably too flashy for a bard to use anyways...but u shall get the idea. Song of Fire After a bard memerizes this spell with a preformance check of 45 (the words seem to disapear from the charactors mind after five seconds of reading it aloud untill one can master the pape, then he will be able to sing "Song of Fire" One per day, per level, pluse 1 for every 1000 exps the charactor wishes to spend when first learning this song. This counts only towrds bard levels beacuse only bards have the true understanding of song-magic, however a person can be a 1st lvl bard and a 53 lvl fighters who happens to have maxed out perform...but still only can that 54 lvl person sing the song once per day: Effect: While singing the song the charactor can control a 5 by 5 area of fire. For every round kept sining his power doubles. He cannot creat fire only manipulate it, however he can grow it to a very large state or snuff it out of exists perminitly. He can also have the fire appear to be like a fire elemental standing alone however after the song ends, the fire was just let itself down wherever it is and will notburn without fuel. Some other ideas include: *Turing water to ice, vice versa *Charming a large amount of people *Calling/controlling weather/storm *Calling/creating/commanding undead Some Title ideas include: *Song of death *Song of magic *song of life *Song of summening *Song of secrets |
| Bandido07-08-03, 07:29 PM | That's a very high DC for quite a small effect. Is this meant to be a type of magic characters would generally use while adventuring, or is it for major rituals only? Can people aid you to increase the effect, or make it more likely to succeed? |
| Dream Spinner07-09-03, 12:58 AM | What's DC? |
| nick01200007-09-03, 02:14 AM | Difficulty Class. the number you need to roll. if d20+ your bonus at whatever skill >= DC, you succeed. |
| Dream Spinner07-09-03, 02:47 AM | Oh, okay. |
| erchamion8108-03-03, 10:30 AM | Another idea you may consider for Song Magic is Tonal Magic or Vibrational Magic. I don't play D&D; so I don't know if a similar system already exists. In a vibrational system, every object, creature, element has a distinct tone or, for more complex items, series of tones associated with it. So by manipulating that vibration through song or music, a Bard (or other spellcaster) can manipulate the associated item. Using a Tonal system a Bard could quite literally do anything. Of course, extensive training would be required to learn the system well enough to use it effectively, but, presumably, anyone with the proper powers or tools could use song to manipulate their surroundings. |

Intresting...Where did you pick this up from, or are you just very creative :) ? |
| erchamion8108-03-03, 03:10 PM | Me creative? Not generally, though I do have my moments. (Doesn't everyone? We all play Magic or RP...) Tonal magic is something I considered briefly a couple years ago (I was in band too), but I wasn't doing anything with it at the time. Then recently, I read a series of books by Elizabeth Haydon that uses the concept in more depth, though you'd have to make some changes of course to make it fit in D&D rules. I just found the world creation project here so I thought I'd dip my toes in a bit. (I'm working on a smaller project of my own in the YouMakeTheCard forum.) I especially like the idea because it has a very simple premise. You create and manipulate vibrations. There are many different ways to draw on that simple basis. It has immense possibility. |
| Felsley08-11-03, 06:42 PM | TSR made a space-opera setting a la SW for their (brilliant) Amazing Engine RPG-system; it included a magic-system based on song / tones / music (kinda discount version of the force...) You might wanna take a look at that product; sadly I can't remember the exact title or stock-number, but if you mail me, I'll find it 4 U. -Fels |
| Obsidianjaerc08-14-03, 11:48 PM | Has anybody read The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks? If people are really set on Song magic you might want to go with something like that. But make it VERY VERY rare. |
| nick01200008-15-03, 12:01 AM | I've always thought of the Wishsong as the powers of a sorceror. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-15-03, 08:49 PM | Yes it is simialar but based on Will check for different powers. |
