For my current group, I am assembling a d20 steampunk campaign. Basically, in this campaign, the Vodun are massively powerful beings who were the favorite creations of the immortal omniscient god Elrendar. Elrendar takes little interest in ideals of good, evil, chaos or law, but only cares about creation. He gave the Vodun their own world, populated with elves, dwarves, halflings and other lesser creatures. The elves had their forests and gardens to tend, the dwarves had their mines to delve, and the halflings had their beasts to care for. All the races were careful to harvest, mine, etc. in such a way that they could have a completely replenished natural supply the next year. Now, Elrendar had told the Vodun not to create their own race until they had acheived Omniscience, but the Vodun decided that their knowledge had made them as good as omniscient, and they created humanity, a race whos primary instinct was simply to grow, and who were capable of adapting to almost any circumstance. Needless to say, human's nearly destroyed the planet. The Vodun argued amongst themselves as to how to deal with the problem, with Ideas varying from destroying humanity, to destroying everything and creating their own world anew without Elrendar, to trying to teach humanity to be more like their predecessor races. All Vodun wept to see their world in such dire turmoil, and their tears fell to earth and became Dragons. The dragons embodied the attitudes of the gods they were spawned from, some seeking to protect humanity, some seeking to destroy it. In the end, the Destructive (not necessarily evil) dragons were about to win the war, and only a few human cities were still defended by dragons, the council of Preserving dragons crafted an orb, an Item that was capable of creating an anti-magic field around the entire planet, forcing all dragons into hibernation. Some dragons(including the Preserving Dragons) hid themselves deep beneath the earth, but the rest were found by humans in their hibernating state and slain. Without their magic, the civilisations collapsed. Only the mongrel humans survived, carrying the blood of all races with them as they adapted to the new circumstances.

Now, thousands of years later, 1866 England, a coal mine accidently discovers the temple where the orb was held, and deactivates it. The dragons, their destructive numbers severely thinned, awaken, as do ancient blood traits within humans. the british isle is overrun with Charred ones - the vengeful spirits of mistreated coal miners, especially children, who were infused by the sudden burst of arcane energy when the orb was deactivated(there was something of a wave effect with energy rushing towards the orb and creating a small explosion in england). Magic has awakened, and the Vodun - unable to interact with the world and with bodies shattered - are reappearing in the world in their broken forms, as thousands of disjointed Kami (for example, the god of nature might now be a series of forest spirits, unable to assemble themselves into the Vodun they once were, who cluster around altars and groves) who appear in dreams and give visions of how to build their shrines and altars, from which they can wield a fraction of their original power. Also, arcane knowledge has allowed some engineers to create incredible constructs of brass and steel. Coal is even more valuable a resource than ever. Vampire cults and dragon disciples are springing up in continental europe. The catholic church is actively warring against the new gods.

What do you think? Any thoughts?

Athranon-

You should look into the iron Kingdom books by Privateer Press. Really good Steampunk world. Its the same world as Warmachine and Horde's miniture games, but it's D20 based.
I've been playing in one for a few months now and I'm using some elements for my own campaign world.

The IK setting is interesting but they really botched the technology aspect of the game (the mechanics are clumsy and conveluted to begin with) and the game somehow failed to live up to my expectations. It is a good setting though. A thousand light years ahead of Eberron. I think the tech issues could be fixed though.
