| Silent_spy04-13-04, 01:20 AM | In a magical world, people cast spells. Do peasants cast spells? I'm guessing no. Why? They dont know how. As for those who do...they had to learn somewhere, right? I propose 7 major academies, one located in each major city. They will be: fire water/ice earth nature wind/weather light/good evil/dark mechanics. (not magical) Fire covers..fire... as well as chaos, destruction, and a little bit of magma/lava. water controlls water and sea life, snow, ice, cold, etc. earth controlls dirt and rock, and a little magma/lava. nature controlls trees, plants, and cute little critters. and enormous man eating critters. wind controlls, predictably, wind. In addition, lightning and weather magic, and various flying creatures. Light has a major hold on healing and purifying, but have their share of offensive spells. expecially against darkness evil represents necromancy, demons, greed, selfishness, blablabla....drone...(believe me this is better than listing it all). As for mechanics...should it have its own home? maybe we could squish air and light together, or just have 8 academies. Or, because it isnt magic, it can just have minor schools/workshops all over the place. Everyone thoughts on the academy idea are welcome, as well as spells, elementals, etc. |
| Mak04-13-04, 01:24 AM | The magic system will have to be worked out, to fit both D&D and MTG... I prefer the Color Wheel, but this is a discussion for all potential creators, and one or two WizOs... How about: :w: Lawful Good, Light :g: Chaotic Good, Life :u: Lawful Neutral, Order :r: Chaotic Neutral/Evil, Chaos :b: Lawful Evil, Darkness This could work. |
| ArcboundColossus04-13-04, 02:56 PM | Why dont we give the tree people more of a beast like look long musclar arms + legs.plus pointed ears that are long for good hunting skills. Claws and horns so they seem undisturbed and pure like a g/w mixture. |
| ArcboundColossus04-13-04, 03:07 PM | Also I think that they should have a conection to mana so the create great protection spells and each protect different colors. The leader has protection from all. |
| ArcboundColossus04-13-04, 03:11 PM | Sorry wrong place |
| Agent Graves04-13-04, 06:43 PM | I like your idea on using the wheel, mak. I think then, that the academies can be changed to accomodate the five magic colours... and maybe we should have five great cities not seven |

Trying to synch up MtG colors and DnD alignments is a good way to start a flame war. Well, not flames, so much as an endless, heated discussion. ;) Anyway, this conversation has been had before. I don't really know enough about MtG to comment on this specific color scheme. If you are interested in developing a magic system, you should try to find some of the old stuff about the five elements. But there's no rule saying there has to be only one magic system, either! |

I like the idea.... then theres a colorless which is basically any alignment, and artifacts in magic can do anything, so...yeah. some alignments werent represented, so I changed it. Not perfect, but can it ever be? close as I can get. Anybody think of somthing better? :w:any good :g: any neutral :u: any lawful :r: any chaotic :b: any evil the magic symbols just represent what they are in magic then there are artifacts. In magic, they just have a boring circle (which also occurs in most colored magic cards) so we need a symbol for them. I'm working on it. lastly, there can be more than one source of magic. for example, bards and clerics get their magic from music and their gods respectively. |
| Silent_spy04-13-04, 09:28 PM | I have a symbol for colorless. On magic cards, it can stay as the plain circle, but you cant have a building with a sign on it thats a circle with a number in it. If you want it, I can attach it to an email and send it to you. Its basically a dark grey circle with two light grey gears and a light grey screw-thingie. whatever. it's not that important...a picture's worth a thousand words. Maybe we can put it on the site. |
| WizO_Iyala04-14-04, 04:17 PM | Symbol as requested :) |
| Silent_spy04-14-04, 09:13 PM | Thanks. Okay, now onto another problem. In magic (especially now) there are artifacts everywhere and people who specialize in making them. In D&D, there are aa couple constructs, very expensive, and mostly animated but non-mechanical. example: homonculus. This is a part of the two that isn't quite grafting well. We may need a new character class for dungeons and dragons...artificer. Or maybe tinker. Do you think we need or should make another class? maybe we should just have another skill, and a feat that lets you take the skill. Either way we need a bunch of artifacts/artifact creatures statted out in D&D. I've got a bunch of 3rd edition D&D books, so unless anybody wants 3.5 rules only I could handle some of it. Also, leaves, nobody's gonna dig anyhting up about the five ancient elements. know why? Theres four- earth, wind, water, fire. This doesn't fit well with either magic or D&D (maybe better for D&D). |
| nick01200004-19-04, 04:48 AM | The colors of magic shouldn't be linked with alignments. It isn't the type of magic that determines whether you are good or evil, it is how you use it. |
| Agent Graves04-19-04, 07:00 PM | Silent_spy i apologise in advance, but can you explain again. Are you suggesting that we need another basic class? Would the main stat be Intelligance and maybe dexterity? A Tinkerer would introduce a technogothic element into the project i think... which have something to do with the Extinct Technalogical Race... If i understand it correctly i think this would work really well! |
| Silent_spy04-19-04, 10:30 PM | I am suggesting another basic class. Intelligence and dexterity will be major abilities for the class (should it be made). The only problems are... well... making it. How should it work? I have a couple Ideas, but they arent terribly important. The ideas are making the tinker/artificer A)have class only skills and feats (otherwise some smarty pants fighter is going to take the skills/feats and be way better than the artificer is) or B) the artifact making stuff is a class ability (but then some pansy is going to multiclass 1 level in atrificer and be supurior to a pure artificer). I'm looking forward to feedback, until then this is what I think: The artificer (I am pushing for that name) has a class ability that enables the artificers skills but restricts them, forcing you to take more levels in artificer to keep them up to par. There should be artifact related feats that the artificer class gets free (like fighters), and artificers should have a book of mechanics, similar to a spell book, which contains instructions and blueprints of diffirent devices. lastly, i recently learned in my magic system thread that there are laylines and power nodes...or whatever... which contain and control magic. The 5 academies should be placed near their respective nodes. the artifact academy can be placed in whatever area of the land is farthest form a node. |
| Agent Graves04-20-04, 07:12 PM | Some very good ideas, Silent_spy. I can see the problem though. Since this is the academies thread, you should start a new thread entitled 'artificer' |
| the_one_true_shea03-23-06, 07:55 PM | I have an idea inspired from this, but a little off the wall. Go with 7 great magical academies.. each teaching majoritivly the same thing... on vastly different locations of the world. Five of these academies have been decimated by the ravages of time - leaving 2 still extant. Both with divergent tales regarding the path of history. Both aggrandizing their own role over the others of course. Both declare that the relics of the other tower were stolen from what was rightfully theirs, both claim to be uncontested lords of the world. However, they are little more than the schools they appeare to be. Little unity exits even within the two towers. Without them the world would trudge along perhaps, but not nearly so elegantly. Those that learn the arts arcane from either of the academys are found worldwide. From and amongst every culture the Academy Mages are the grease on the wheels of society. In some regions ritual mage duels are played out for the amusment of the rich and powerful. In other lands the Academy Mages are part of the counterculture. Lending their eldritch abilities to aid those that oppose authority. The Academy Mages, even ones from the same tower, are prone to finding themselves on opposite sides of conflicts. Others avoid conflic altogether. Delvers of ancient lore and seekers of secrets they disavow magical politics in favor of an almost arcane religion. some card titles! All of these have the Academy and Mage type Academy Apprentice :shifty: WCP TIM ;) Academy Masters (Legends) Academy Fire Lord (tap & x red for x direct damage) Academy Sky Lord (tap & x white to grant x creatures landwalk of imprinted land) Acadmey Archivest (Tap & x mana to draw x cards) Academy Special Land (have two make em nifty) --------- then D&D Make the 5 lost towers dungeons.. :smirk: Thoughts? |
