| Lord QZip12-10-03, 08:45 PM | Instead of everyone creating a backround story we need to come at this as what kind of a world do we want? So, I want everyone to pitch in they're favorite idea for a theme. Maybe you love horror, or action, or whatever. Just give theme ideas. |
| Lord QZip12-10-03, 09:03 PM | I personally vote for epic courageous heroes in a dangerous world |
| Mak12-10-03, 10:40 PM | Good luck. No sarcasm intended, I sincerely wish you luck. |
| Lord QZip12-11-03, 05:32 PM | Thanks mak I'll need it |
| nick01200012-12-03, 05:01 AM | Especially with the forum dead all but officially. |
| Brknlf12-22-03, 12:34 PM | If you really want to make a theme and try to revive this board, the best thing to do is make something not overly encompassing that is open to interpretation. Anything too specific isn't a bad thing, until its forced upon the other posters here. This has always been the problem of this forum, even in its conceptual days. So, making a specific theme will only serve to keep the level of active posters small and it will cause arguements when someone offers a varied interpretation of the theme. The hard part in doing this would be coming up with a generalized idea that doesn't restrict people from posting their own ideas, yet has enough content to inspire any number posters to come up with their own interpretation and create something new for the world. A big problem with that is also appeascing both RPG players and TCG players. One has to consider a way to incorporate magic so that RPG and TCG players can interpret it enough to enjoy the world without it fitting to much into of the other style of play. Also, from an RPG standpoint, theological considerations must be given. Merely to say that a lot of RPG players still enjoy the concept of religion in their games. Yet, not everyone cares for it as well. Ambient magic was suggested at one time, and this could easily be incorported into various ideas of how magic works. None of which has to ultimately be right or wrong, but there could be interpretation into how various magic races, creatures and mages access this magic (from the ley line concept mentioned to the ritualistic memorizing of arcane rituals to channel the magic to 'tapping' the land for magic). Also, one concept for gods could be that gods only gain powers as belief of worshippers grows (more worshippers-more dominion); sort of like sympathetic magic, gods only have power if the people beleive i nthem. It would allow for local gods to exist without having to make gods canon for the entire world (this if some people like the death cult of some morbid god, not everyone has to accept it as canon). |
| furor12-29-03, 09:14 PM | we should vote on ideas presented, and have a "common" thread, where the finished ideas are kept, my first contribution is in the lets make a world thread. |
| nigirimeshi12-31-03, 12:57 AM | I love demons and undead, so how about we make it horror-esque? And on a grand, multiplanar scale. |
| Drindin12-31-03, 01:05 AM | "And thus he walked through the hall of portals... worlds horrifying, and yet worlds so inviting... any number of the strange, and beleivable could lie beyond one of these simple, wood framed doors... down this grand hall." How about not just one world... but many, varied worlds? All of them connected through some common crossing point. It could be an ether-like plane, or a simple hallway as in the situation described above. Or something stranger yet, like a sea port or some sort of air-ship. Let's do something like that, then we could all have our ideas in pretty much any manner we like. We could join in with others in their world, or create our own, unique world and describe how it's connected to the others. |
| nigirimeshi12-31-03, 01:33 AM | It works. |
| furor01-02-04, 09:46 AM | we have the same icon thingy, anyway, sounds good, and like a lot of work, but if we all have our own homebrew worlds we could simply connect them. |
| nigirimeshi01-06-04, 05:00 PM | Not anymore. I found a gnome pic^_^. And as for your idea, it is hard work to create a world without having to weave it into a multiverse of worlds created by others. I took part in the original one(using the account named Holland Wilson) and it took a lot of work to create one. It is true that disagreements about some aspects(such as the proposed reflective moon) made the work slower, but populating the world with denizens and such would take longer with one person and that is fully half of world creation. Besides, two people are far more creative than one. If we built a world as a group, possibly using our favorite aspects of the old world creation project, we could expand on that and build more worlds for that particular corner of the multiverse. |
| Lord QZip01-06-04, 10:28 PM | Here's an idea. The multiverse seems like the only option. How about this: the universe is full of planets. The only way to travel from planet to planet is through portals. These portals are created by magic and tear a hole through space. Which instantly transports you to the any other portal. They do occur occasionally in nature but it takes massive amounts of magic to make a portal so they are a rare phenomenon. There should be some effects of portal jumping and magic cost involved (hefty cost) and maybe even a special feat or skill to use. Enough of my rambling come up with your own idea. |
| nigirimeshi01-06-04, 10:31 PM | IMO, multiple planes are cooler than multiple planets. |
| Drindin01-06-04, 11:30 PM | Allow me to elaborate: You don't HAVE to work on your own world if you don't want to. You can help one person create their world. Or you can help two, or three, or however many you want. And another rule that would go with that... Accept help when it's offered. |
| sirfart01-06-04, 11:47 PM | ive got an idea! how about a sandy desolated world with only subterreinial rivers to supply water. resources are low so the great leaders of this world plan to harness the power of the planeswalkers to move into another realm more suitable for their needs.but the other world is inhabited by balanceless entities of strange powers, and they like their home so the two worls clash in an epic war depicting the change in rule in this meager fragment of the universe... |
| sirfart01-06-04, 11:48 PM | lets brainstorm people! |
| sirfart01-06-04, 11:50 PM | can somebody please talk after me |
| Finwe01-06-04, 11:55 PM | I had a good idea for a world once. In truth, is was actualy an extremely large demiplane (like the size of earth). The most interesting charasteristic however was that it was double sided. One side was tyranicaly ruled by the evil wizard who had created the demiplane, but who did not know of the other side. The other side was full of refugess from his tyranny, who had escaped through "the hole" which was the passage between the two sides, but was hidden from the wizard by other powers. That could make for an interesting world! |
| Mak01-07-04, 12:10 AM | I'ver made quite a lot of worlds, I've been at it since I was a kid. My most recent one is a world covered entirely by massive black-trunked, white-leafed trees. Elves and humans (mostly half-elves) live in the canopy amidst the leaves and branches, while goblins swing around from the trunks to the roots, where sunlight rarely reaches the ground. All of society is built around the Trees, and the ruling minority of half-elves likes to pretend the goblins don't exist. Have you noticed? Worlds are more coherent (and therefore, more flavorful) when a single mind is behind the works. That's why I gave up. If we're really going to do this, we have to stop creating without consensus. We have to decide everything little by little, starting with what we want out of the world. We all know we want a boards-created shared world, why can't we start properly? |
| sirfart01-07-04, 12:19 AM | how about a dark dense jungle world of watermen and orcs. dakness and water. the world is so dark from the heavy conopies that no greens will grow save for the sun hogging trees.a crisis is at hand and so the orcs manage to capture a lost novice planeswalker.they use him to teleport into the land of the light, fedolumina, and the rage war against the mysterious entities of a new form, the hypersolars,a great force of compressed gas emitting an ultraviolet radiance.this stops the orcs for a while until the captured planeswalker reveals himself as one of the entities' head generals.the entities force our the orcs and the realm of fedolumina is saved, along with the once dark but now light planet of Yamikos.this is because the orcs did not surrender,no no they did not, they captured another entity before they left and they harnessed his great energy into an artifact.this artifact was called yamisol, which they mounted at the equatorial pole of their planet, just below the heavy canopies.everyones happy!the end! now sleep my darlings sleep.... |
| Brknlf01-07-04, 09:48 AM | Anything too singular, too 'weird', or too powerful is really cutting off the whole concept of making the project large. By singular, I mean saying the whole world is a desert, a jungle, a mangrove swamp or a magma field where people live on islands that float through lava. This limits the potential of the project to just ideas that support the one big idea. The object isn't to create one idea and be done with the creation process. I do believe the original intent was to start small and let it grow with imput from all the posters. I'm not saying they are bad ideas in the very least, but if we make the world all one element, like all islands (water world), people that like mountains or deserts are going to be turned off from the project. As for weird, I mean anything that has to be radically changed to support the entire world making seem 'alien' from our own. This would be like saying strange gas clouds roam the planet and this is the source of nutrition for all life on the world (instead of the sun). Anything to scifi or scifantasy will really just turn away a lot of potential posters. I'm not saying these are bad ideas either, just that again, they'll turn people away instead of inspiring people to show up here. With too powerful, I mean saying one wizard rules half the world, or the whole world is comprehensive of itself and all the inhabitants are working to harness planar travel to find another world full of resources. Multiple themes and regions can work well together. A few people keep saying that this can only be done with multiple planets or planes. Everything suggested as a 'theme' can really be incorporated into the one world itself. I'm just taking everything suggested in this thread so far. There could be a large jungle, where light never reaches the ground. There's a fairly large section of this jungle that is actually on hilly terrain, with deep gorges. In the trees and on the hills live the orcs, and in the gorges near the rivers live 'watermen'. Beyond this terrain, the trees become a little thicker and some have white leaves, this is more mystical and these are the lands of the elves. Near the far borders of their lands, the rivers mysteriously go underground and, as such, plant life on the surface of the world thins out. There is some barren badlands inhabitated by horse raiding barbarians and beyond these badlands there is a massive desert. Beneath that desert, the very same rivers stil exist. Desert nomads know of this water but cannot fully tap the potential as a thriving underdark community has grown around the areas that can be accessed for water. These are things suggested as ' multiple' themes, but they can all work well in one world. And that's only a limited potential for the entire world. There could be dark bayous filled with nightmarish inhabitants, plains with nomadic druidic type peoples, tundra with an adaptive ecosystem where the inhabitants hunt one large creature a year to feed themselves for the whole year. Just look at our own world for massive diversity on one world. As a 'game' world it wouldn't be wholly coherent as if created by one person. There is so much diversity in ecosystems, that many cultures of the human race exist as they adapt to varrious terrain. Agreeing on a topic is one thing, as Mak has suggested, but only one thing is limiting. I think a key here, which is different then the way a lot of people create their worlds, is that we start small and let it grow of it's own accord. I also propose that we accept a policy of consensus in creating this world. The only way for something to truly be a part of this world is when multiple posters contribute to the idea and perpetuate it with more contributions. If something isn't liked, instead of responding negatively, just don't respond to it. That way, it falls way behind on the threads and no one pays anymore attention to it, like the collection plate of doom that was proposed. I'm not saying we should all go out and start a thread with our own idea, it would be good to agree on something to start with though. |
| nigirimeshi01-07-04, 10:26 AM | What you say is true. I am not suggesting that the only way to work in different themes is in a multiverse, I just like multiple planes^_^. My world is a good example of what you were saying and what I suggested. It has the distinct themes of horror, conflict, mystery and action on a world where spacial distortions make planar travel fairly common. A single character of one of the standard D&D races can petition humans(who have driven the other races out of their lands, only recently letting them back in due to the strange phenomina) to treat the other races better(the humans still control most of the lands), investigate the strange platonic shifts that are making the supercontinent of Arathkis break apart, investigate the disappearance of the stars, kill random people, immerse themselves in politics and attempt to control one of the alliances dividing Arathkis in half, find a distortion and travel the planes, or travel to the Forgotten Isles. And then there are the MPCs with a dragon's horde of new options. And most of it is connected. My world is designed to take players from level 1 to level 20, all the time with an epic storyline in the background. Yes, I know that that would go into the Homebrew forum, I'm just giving an example of what I think is a good mesh of multiple themes, satisfying hack n' shashers and rpers. |
| furor01-07-04, 05:48 PM | I think we should all assign a portion of the world to each one of us, to develop and then try to make them cohesive, giving input and such, we should all decide on how many continents, the importance of magic in everyday life and the major races of the world. this way every idea can be included, for instance the idea of the two sided world, one ruled by a sorceror, the other free. The sorceror could rule a small continent, and a vast cavern system could go under the ocean or through the world, or the refugees could have found a portal unknown to the ruler. the path could then lead to an area of swamps of the silver leafed trees etc. |
| nigirimeshi01-07-04, 08:50 PM | That may work. However, some of that would cause disputes. We should start a collection of ideas for certain aspects of the world. Then we start polls. If more vote yea, we include that in the world. However, the first poll we should have is which theme setup we want. So far, the options I see(suggested or takes on the suggested) are: 1)a multiverse with a general theme or storyline worked subtly into each plane and a bunch of different planes with different features and inner conflicts as well as their own themes 2)a multiverse with isolated worlds with their own themes 3)an interlocked multiverse with a single, major theme and planes with subtle alternate themes and sub-themes 4)a central world with multiple different regions with different themes 5)a central world with one decided on theme and regions with subtle themes and sub-themes My suggested voting rules: people can vote for as many as they want. Then, we take the most popular two and have people vote for one. I personally like numbers one and three, so, one vote for each if we decide to take the vote as suggested above. |
| Lord QZip01-07-04, 09:33 PM | Just in case you all didn't know. This isn't the Homebrew forum. I'd love to hear your ideas but I was more thinking of figuring out a game mechanic to be a flag ship for everyone else's ideas. Not create a world and say, "But you can add your own stuff." Though right now that sounds good. I'll take on the creation of any races (despite being a Star Wars RPGer I'm really good at it). I'm sorry I'm a Star Wars RPGer. Which is why I opted for the planets idea. If you could explain the planes thing it would be much appriciated. I'm sory if I act too sci-fi I'll just have to remember exactly how things roll in the fantasy universe. My idea was to use Nigriimeshi's #1 or #2 to accomplish this task. Though other points of view are much appriciated I just think that leaving it all in one world or plane would mean that to work in your own place it'd have to be a new found land and I think that could get really old really fast. I do have my own idea for a plane or planet or whatever but the Dnd rules pertaining to magic would have to be SEVERELY modified for it to work. Then there'd have to be a GARGANTUAN re-working of all magical feats and skills and classes and items and that's WAY too much work. |
| nigirimeshi01-08-04, 09:42 AM | There could be a number of books written about planes. Well, there have been, but there could be more. I shall give you the nutshell version. Planes are worlds not connected by space. Rather, they are connected by Ęther, a magical transitive plane encompassing everything(in D&D, it's called the Astral Plane). The planes have to be accessed via magical means and are much more fun to play with than planets. There are planes of all sorts. Some are round worlds, some are flat worlds. One might be Earth as it is now, while one may be the Earth of Medieval belief. Most universes have one main planet(or one planet alone) and the plane is named the same as the planet. Some, especially Spelljammer-themed planes, have multiple planets in addition to planes. We might do a planar thing with space travel, too. If you want to learn more about planes, go to a bookstore and skim the Manual of the Planes, or start reading the MtG books(which I would suggest anyway). |
| Lord QZip01-09-04, 08:44 PM | wow I'm a thread killer  FUN!!! Now someone set up a wonderful place to talk about all your ideas in the homebrew forum and link it here |
| MUA'DIB01-11-04, 04:28 AM | not to be a hater or nothin, but yall are crazy if u guys think ur all gonna come up with a common consensus on a project like this you got a hundred different people wanting 200 different things out of this, the best idea is to explore either the portal between planets idea or the different dimension idea, if yall want to come up with one common setting then it should be like a nexus point(s) where different settings converge, also this idea is dumb in the first place yall arent gonna get anything done worth playing in the first place because its gonna be all jumbled and ish, oh yeah by the way yall need to go get girlfriends |
| Lord QZip01-11-04, 04:12 PM | What I want is someone formal with the Dnd rules to create portals under those rules. Have a large magic drain +and maybe portal hopping has some adverse effect on the body? Just make up the stats and then we'll use that to let you link your own worlds together in a collective pool. |
| furor01-18-04, 09:30 PM | we need to get more people in here for starters, but i think that we should each create a world/demiplane and then yea, i'm going to be doing a horror-esque 1800's demiplane. |
| mkoops01-19-04, 11:41 AM | What about developing a world based on Hindu mythology? Tolkien based a lot of his work on Nordic and Celtic mythology. This has influenced our fantasy literature and rpg for 50 years. What about something completely different like basing Hindu concepts of creatures and the natural world for a fantasy world? |
| Lord QZip01-19-04, 12:08 PM | Actually Tolkien was a Christian and if anything I'd want to use a Christian base (it's my personal religion), but the mainstream hates Christianity. So let's just not delve in religious territory ok? I don't want some kid to not be able to play because his mom doesn't want him delving in another religion. I'll try to come up with my own fantasy demi-plane. That sounds like a good idea. Though the one I've been creating has severly modified rules so I can't use that. |
| Oops02-03-04, 06:37 PM | Originally posted by nigirimeshi ...It is true that disagreements about some aspects(such as the proposed reflective moon) made the work slower... I remember proposing a reflective planet, but that was hardly what slowed things down. |
| Agent Graves03-14-04, 09:48 PM | wow, this has the makings to be huge! I'd love to be invovled in this... or ad my 2cents (i think its about 3.7 or so with the exchange rate) A few comments if i may; > terrey pratchet used the hindu (i think hindu) mythology setting his world on a disc on the back of four elephants on the back of a giant turtle. What if the world wasn't a sphere? It'd make for some interesting 'over the edge' problems > I'm not familiar with 'magic' but (correct me if i'm wrong) there is a storyline spanning quite a few expansion sets about a plane traveller. You could begin by creating the universe/multiverse/ hall of portals from the point of view of our 'traveller' > Instead of working from beginning of the world or worlds, the traveller can be thrown right into the thick of things. And i guess we discover why and how it was all made along with him or her > the debate between a multiverse or a universe with many planets... i guess you could look at it between 'sliders' or 'star wars' (i chose them both coz they're the same genre -scifi and im a huge fan of SW) I guess you'd just have to work on how technecially advanced each plane is and who can travel... whether it be commoners walking to the next multiverse's grocery store, the secret society trying to take control of each multiverse or a lone traveller discovering the hall of portals and having adventures between them all. > as for nigirimeshi's poll: i vote 3 more when i think about it |
| DavisPS03-14-04, 10:18 PM | I do believe there was a thread about this on the old boards, but WIZO_IYALA PLEASE GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE AND FIX THE LINKS IN YOUR STICKY THREAD THANK YOU. The most versatile idea seems to me the MtG planar setup. That way, we can do whatever we want and stick it on another plane instead of trying to stuff everybody's ideas into the same place. The thing is, do we really need that? Different areas of the world can be just as diverse as the multiverse. So the best idea is a combination of the two. We can have one large, varied world, and several smaller, more uniform planes, possibly created by magic, or demiplanes. That way, we can have everything naturally possible on the same plane, much like our own planet, but larger and more varied, and stranger things, like that two-sided world, connected through portals. We don't have to decide on this. Think what you will, I'm confident this is how it's going to turn out. I think we all agree so far that there should at least be some concept of a multiverse, and nobody seems to support the rigid planar structure of Dungeons and Dragons. So let's go for the MtG multiverse with most of our focus on one world. |
