Ok! From what I've read thus far I'm getting the jist that too many cooks spoil the broth so apparently everyone went out for their 15 minute break ;). I played M:tG a long time ago and still have a jist of how it's setup. I currently play DnD so I think there is a nice blend of wrapping the two together. It is possible!!

I think the best way to proceed is to meet a middle ground regarding the start big/start small notion being tossed around. Simply put, let's make a bulletin list of basic outlines of this world so that anyone can jump in. I think the bulleted list should be no more than 20 items long so that an initial poster doesn't get intimidated by it and run the other way.

That being said, here's what I suggest with an explanation below for each one.

* med-high magic amount
* large earth-type planet (seasons, atmosphere, contains all the elements)
* let's not try to get detail-specific on exact rule mechanics
* Be open to comments and suggestions
* No Ubers
* Faith exists/Multi Divinity

med-high magic amount This has to have at least the medium amount of magic in a standard DnD world because of the fact that M:TG is basically... casting spells. It'd be quite unfair to limit that aspect of it. However, I don't think a specialist class of wizard needs to be created just because there are elementalist spell-casters in just about every setting.

large earth-type planet We are most familiar with this type since we all live on ... well earth. Making it a large earth planet will give people *plenty* of space to create their own niche if they so desired.

rule mechanics If we focus on rule mechanics rather than the imaginative aspect, we start drowning and loosing focus. The exact details of how spells work when clashing the two worlds is rather un-important IMO when compared to the history of the court scheme which gave birth to the new creature created/summoned to complete a task for the ruler of the nation (new creature from a new expansion pack for M:tG)

Be open to comments and suggestions: : I think this is the aim of a collaborative project. While individual ideas are good, the point is for us to make this together. If someone has a comment, criticism or suggestion, give it more consideration. By adding elements to other ideas, the world will grow and there will be some pretty cool elements that the original poster didn’t consider.

No Ubers: : Sure there will be mega-powerful types here and there. However, I feel if people start posting the best mage or the best whatever, it could easily develop into a competition to see who can make the most powerful whatever.

Faith and Divinity: Whether it is personal faith, like sympathetic magic, there should be some form of this. Whether gods are even real or not, people who believe in them or some other higher power should have some form of divine magic. This way, it allows for various cultures to develop faiths that could enhance the feel of them.

Thoughts?

I think most of us agree with the too many cooks :) Thanks for stepping up here.

A few thoughts/suggestions on this. If your post is going to kind of serve as a guideline, can you make it sticky or whatever the correct terminology is so that it's always at the top (read this: )?

I like the three things you mentioned for the list. I agree with the amount of magic; even D&D isn’t created as a low-magic setting/game system. I especially agree with the earth-based planet; mainly because I don’t think we need anything too radically different and, if we did, it could mean radical changes to physics (as has been pointed out in the past on this project). Of the three points, I strongly agree with the third one, as we’re only creating the world there isn’t much reason to slap on a bunch of restrictions or try to make it work into a specific system of magic (regardless of what game system we’re talking about).

I think those were great suggestions and a good basis to begin with. Here are a couple I’d like to add as well

* Be open to comments and suggestions
* No Ubers
* Faith exists/Multi Divinity

Be open to comments and suggestions: I think this is the aim of a collaborative project. While individual ideas are good, the point is for us to make this together. I plan on sticky-ing the compiled list of guidelines after it's been established and talked/debated (if needed). With less than 10 threads on this board, I don't see a problem of people finding it just yet ;).

I like your suggestions as well! How many more are actually needed? I said 20 max but thinking about it now, I don't think we'll even get to 10. . o O ( Which is a good thing... )

Discussion: Technology

I have two sides on this:

1. It's needed. With Urza's mines and clockwork steeds, there needs to be some amount of rare technology. Since those are just legendary creatures, most cultures could easily dismiss their existance.

2. It can be remote locations only. It could be that there is a planar portal in that land in which a long time ago before it collapsed the peasants of the land used it to gain the weapons for a world domination ploy or to save the world from domination.

What do you think/ How do you feel about that idea for technology? It allows people the freedom to either have it rumored to be in existance (legends), in use, or to deny they exist altogether.

aha! found the threads. I'll weed through them later on today.

You know that saying... how does it go? Any form of technology, if sufficiently advanced, will seem like magic. Maybe we could take that approach to technology for this world.
Brknlf

02-17-04, 11:35 AM
As for technology, even in D&D it can't be wholly denied (Apparatis of Kwalish - the big lobster suit). I'm not opposed to the potential existence of technology. As for level of potential technology, from what I remember in M:tG way back when I played - Urza's technology was no more then a sort of steam level base of technology. It seemed a touch on the bulky side, even the clockwork stuff is on the bulky side.

Mak, I don't know if your suggesting that advanced technology seems like magic to the unknowing masses or if it is something based on a magical bearing (like large clockwork items that are completely functional on their own accord, unlike real world clockwork items that need to be wound up, perform specific, rhythmic functions and then die down slowly). I'm not opposed to either, just curious.

Both M:tG and D&D are based on the fantasy genre and this board did spring up amongst M:tG and D&D players. What I'm saying with this is that I think any technology used in this world should have some basis in the fantasy genre (like the clockwork stuff, that's pretty cool - or steam-punk fantasy). Either the case, I think that technology should not become better than potential magic; I think if technology were available and could be better than magic, it would down-play magic and magic should be a part of this world (again, M:tG and D&D are both based on fantasy magic).

Just some more thoughts there.
Mak

02-18-04, 12:13 AM
Yes, I'm suggesting that technology will seem like magic to the masses. Also, the technology should be based on the magic/physics system of the world.

Anyway, in fantasy stories magic and technology are usually metaphors for the same thing- Western education.
WizO_Shadow

02-18-04, 10:31 PM
While technology could be percieved by outsiders of the nation (not plane) as magic, for the people of the area in which there is technology, it is most likely known as that. Technology not magic. The technology level in M:TG is rudamentry at best with steam powered artifacts and artifacts that don't always work well. You know... I think I'm going ot have to get keep my M:tG cards nearby for reference... let me grab them..

Ok. Back. I'm not sure about later editions (after 1997 IIRC) but from what I'm seeing, most of this exists in the DnD world already... Colossus of Sardia is just a golem... easy enough... the clockworks are iffy but are do-able with a few inventive gnomes easily enough. Towers, amulets, racks, staves, swords, howling mines, fountains...

er... are there major techological items like a 1967 stingray corvette in a baby blue with a white crop top??

As far as what sets of cards its going to be based on, it will be the reverse of that statment. We'll create the world and then we can make cards based on this world. This is kinda of covered in WizO_Shadow's 3 bullet.

Maybe the bullet could be edited a little or a new bullet added? Something to the effect that the world will not be based off any existing material, D&D Source Material or M:tG Card Sets alike?

there are a few things i would like too comment on. first, if you build a world, ya gotta make it unique. not because of anything, but because it is more fun. there are plenty of already existing steam-punk settings, so here is a suggestion on how you could do it. one, multi-cultural, have more than one kind of magic. two, decide what plane this is going to take place on. if Mirrodon, or Otaria, or whatever, than follow the background for that.

BUT if you want your own, you should probably develop a sort of multi-culture (sry said twice) and have different techs for each, like one might have Mirrodon type things, and another might have stuff that is similar to Urza's but it is truly up to you. i Just don't see Banshee's Blade, or Rust Mouth ogre as fitting into a sort of general MTG world. alot of things are based on the world in which they were made. things generally adapt. so for the sake of realism, (to a certain degree) try and base it in one world, or try and a build a place in which different types of things can take place. different cultures, like maybe, one culture, let's say Vedolken, uses mirrodon type tech. but the Humans, with their vast numbers, are lower tech, just stopping at Urza's

Note: this is just my opionion.

The bullet can definately be edited/added on to. We could even make like 2 threads stickied and divide them up into World Setup: which will have the final bulleted list of guidelines so anyone can submit something on the world easily enough, and the other one be like well anything.

We could divide itno groups and one group take on the magic area and make new magic stuff/areas, One could take the creatures and post final new creatures... Ooooo I see a new sticky. Perhaps the second sticky would be finalizations of new spells, creatures, lands, artifacts or legends or whatnot proposed!

Thoughts?

Multiple stickies would be cool. Maybe something in the area of 3:
One with Guidelines (and/or a faq), one for M:tG related conversions (spells, creatures, lands, artifacts, legends, etc.), and one for D&D related conversions (New spells, PrC's, Monster Stats, etc.). As for as the thread for anything else, which I see as flavor, setting and background materials or general discussion about the world, perhaps just normal threads?
WizO_Shadow

02-25-04, 11:15 AM
Well, the purpose of stickies is so they don't get lost in the shuffle of everyday posts sand everyone needs to reference them often. A sticky about Guidelines/FAQ and a sticky containing the final copies of conversions and everything new (after it's been discussed) could be posted there. I think it's best to keep the post count on sticky threads low because after a certain point (100 or 1000 I can't remember which, I hav eto look) it starts lagging really badly in loading so a new one has to be started.

That is a good article. There was, at one time before Piazo Publising took over the magazines, articles on the site about World Building as well (quite a few actually). Also Dragon had a serial of about 3 articles called Dungeon Craft that was geared along the same lines.

Looking at it, I might think it would be something to very seriously consider as we start to develop distinct regions of the world. Its also something I've been thinking about before anwyasy for this project. When regions are made, there should be some small consideration given to at least opening up for creating new conversions for the games rather than adapting it easily into a system. I don't know if I can explain this without an example.

For instance, someone could be developing a swamp or bog. Along the same lines of the article, they decide to give the swamp a unique feature. There is something strange in the water that makes the creatures/animals/people that live off it different somehow. Maybe they become more sturdy, capable of taking more damage or regenerating somehow. In D&D terms, there could be a new template made for monsters for the region that makes them fit this description. In M:tG, a series of cards could be made (like an expansion set) that has some of these bigger monsters included in it with regeneration abilities, or enchantments of some kind that include the abilities of the region. As the region develops, there could be special lands made for M:tG, or adventures made for D&D. Legends cards for M:tG and new spells or PrC's for D&D.

However, the thing that makes it interesting in creating is the new aspect, which opens up not only more creation for the world project, but more conversions for M:tG and D&D. The thing is to keep doing that, the unique elements need to be an a smaller scale level. If the unique traits are just common to the entire world, it kind of levels it off for creating new cards for M:tG and new material for D&D.

If that makes sense?

Like me?

I think I understand what you're trying to say. The world should have lots of unique, original stuff, and tying them to a central theme might limit that. On the other hand, If everything is too original we'll end up with a mess similar to what we had a few months ago, with elemental elves, talking psychic rocks and refugee Kavu from Magic: The Gathering. The theme doesn't have to limit creativity, it just has to tie it all together.

Do you play L5R? If you notice, each Clan has its distinct flavor and "personality". However, thanks to the history of the game they all fit together- each Clan was formed a thousand years ago by a brother or sister of the first Emperor. Each Clan then took on the habits, values and traits of its founder.

That's what I'm talking about.

why not have differant realms for things that way certain things are found in certain places. i mean they all still have to tie in together but its better to have realms i think...it just might help a bit
WizO_Shadow

02-27-04, 09:04 AM
If we do break it out into separate realms, I think to keep it organized, each realm should have a (as in a single) thread. Perhaps a country that specializes in each element and then a general catch-all that ties it all together as well as .. catching the rest?

Renee

02-27-04, 09:47 AM
Actually the way I'm looking at seperate regions is something more like the world of Toril from D&D. The common area, Forgotten Realms is the typical European medieval fantasy setting, its practically standard D&D. Forgotten Realms is set in the area called Faerun (sort of like a continent). West of Faerun are the Hordelands and Thay, two diverse area. Hordelands would be like Mongolia almost and I think Thay is something more Russian in origin (Rasputin). Beyond this is the lands of Kara-Tur, which is sort of a Chinese based fantasy setting and some other continents/realms/countries. Southwest of here is the Land of Zakhara, which is an Arabian fantasy setting, which includes genies and the like.

Having each country specialize in one element is a little to thick. What if it were toned down a little? What if we say various regions of the world were inclined towards an element? This harps back to the old elemental debate about what the elements are and should they directly correlate to the M:tG colors? I don't have a problem if we say they do relate to colors, so long as its colors are just underlying the elements not defining them (which was the basis of the old arguement). So if we say an area is inclined towards an element/color that doesn't mean it is saturated with it. As an example: The Fire or Red (or whatever) area isn't all volcanoes or molten lava or firery; maybe it has a few more vast mountain ranges than the other areas/regions and there are more volcanoes and such than might be considered normal, but not everything is geared to directly relate to the color or element.

Good points.

Honestly, I was thinking that the regions would be one of those person contributions and not necessarily guided/organized factions. Does that make sense?

IIRC, Iyala made a specialized mage class for each of the elements with special rules for those. Which brings back the question of use the old or toss it?

Yes it does, sorry, I must have misread it. I do agree that each region should also have it's own thread though. Maybe, depending on how much work goes on the threads, they could branch out and we could use some subject tags too, to designate regions or something?

These would be cool, so would some of the other things, but there are a few things that I'm not sure about. What if some of the information was gathered and centrally located, and could be used as needed. This way not everything really needs to be worked back into the scheme of things, but everyone has access to it?

I have read through this thread, and am very impressed. So I thought I might add something if I could.

The biggest problem I have had in World Creation is in the balancing faiths. So with this I thought well, what if you were to mix the standard faiths and the mana system together and expand it?

For example in MTG strength and power come not from the gods but from the mana or land, in DnD it obviously comes (genereally) from the Gods. So to give an expansion using the mana system open it up by expanding the list of elements.

A few exaples are:
Time
Space
Metal
Temperature (hot or cold)

Such could give an individual a much wider scope of individualism, addiing to the amount of variation that could be achieved.

I don't know if you want to use this idea, but I thought I might put it up.

I'll put this here before cluttering up things with a new thread.

What is the procedure/possibility of enabling attachments on this board? We are kinda crippled in discussing world creation if not everybody has the ability to share pictures/maps/diagrams/etc.

And it's not like the WCP is likely to overload the bandwidth.

(also, I vote in favor of keeping old stuff)
WizO_Iyala

04-07-04, 05:00 PM
Enabling attachments is a fun idea however, as the mod who is currently on both the attachment-enabled forums, I'll confess that the attchment queue has been causing a few problems lately. I wouldn't like to try to get us something that I couldn't promise we'd be able to keep in the future.

Although, if anyone has any pics they want added (so long as I'm not swamped by dozens a day, feel free to e-mail them to me with a link to the thread you want them in and I'll post them up as WizOs are exempt from the attachment queue :) (offer valid for this board only!)

Thanks Shadow for putting so much work into this forum, I've been a little more mod than participant for a while and I've missed the project. I just wish I'd thought to archive all the old threads before the old boards went :(

It is a pity that the old stuff is gone for good. The only thing I got around to archiving was Paradox's intro thread on the D&D metaboard, which had little to do with what came after. However, I can't even seem to remember what was on the old board, and what was on the new board back last summer. It's all a haze :P

I'll take your word for it on the attachments. It's sure not hard to believe something like that could get out of hand. Maybe they should deputize some junior WizO's just to screen attachments.

By all means post them. glenchuy's still not done in coloring them so maybe he can still modify and incorporate your ideas. It's hard to create a generally agreed upon sketch/art of the Virix if I'm the only one giving the idea on how it will look like.

comments appreciated now.

i've also delayed inking the female version of the virix until after more suggestions have been agreed from those involved in the project.

coloring is also delayed until such comments/directions have been finalized. it's going to be useless to come up with 3-4 schemes of color when the art needs tweaking.

although the male virix is already inked, it can still be edited out if there are minor changes. i'll need to overhaul the complete drawing if there are major changes, but it's okay, since it's probably going to take at most 2 hours since the template is already there.

i'll check the thread regularly for updates.

07-05-04, 09:42 PM
At the risk of getting in trouble (again), I'm going to post without reading everything. I don't think I'm saying anything new here:

I think we can have some resolution of the technology issue by not having everything take place at the same time. On a related note, any calendar system we choose should be easily to convert in our own calendar. (If days are 30 hours long and each year is 400 days long, ages would be hard to keep in sync with the ones we are used to.)

I think we should have flexible sources of magic with no set categories. This way, different systems can exist, and each culture can have its own belief about the nature of magic and where it comes from.

It's a bit of a shame that we don't have the old threads to reference, but even if someone saved them, I'd rather not try to use them as a base for what has come afterwards and what will come.

I seriously hope everything can be kept consistent. I'm more optimistic now with the archive subforum.

RACE'S OF PEOPLE, human dwarf, elf, giant, orgre, gnome's kinder etc should there be all of them or none of them or maybe the creater's can add their own race's.
MAGIC/SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY, yes or no to all? yes, as long as it is logical and done within reason ( in the "DRAGON LANCE" BOOK'S ) science/ technology is done by the gnome's, magic is done by just about everybody except gnome's & kinder..
RELIGION/GOD'S, every other fantasy/sword & sorcery book has them why should these storie's be any differant?.
I hope that i have not rambled on too much, also that my surgestion's & question's are reasonable and contibute something to this project?. if so then let me know.

For mickydmm:

Q1: No, this world isn't set into any pre-existing game mechanics (such as D&D). However, the original intent is to create an individual world that can be converted into D&D and M:tG statistics (game stats and cards).

Q2 & Q3: No, they should not come from other material (RPG or otherwise); everything here should be original content only.

Maybe it's already been said, but what is obvious is that the cards should be an intregal part of the DnD gaming experinece on this world - a bit like the campaign cards in LOTGR. Such cards could in fact replace feats and spells.

Freebie, I am not very sure, but it was my beleif this was creation for a world to be used by both systems and not an alteration of either system. A world is merely a setting not a dictator of rules, isn't it?

However that isn't to say a dm couldn't create ability and feat cards

Couldn't the difference in magic be explained away as a cultural thing? That is to say, mana or the land is the source of strength in one culture, and prayers to the gods grants strength in another culture? That way the two forms can exist together, and at the same time, still be separate ideas. Just my $.02. Disregard if it is a dumb idea.

Is this world going to have a web-site?
Source: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=47961

Hello, I have scrounged this entire forum, read every thread, and I am very encouraged to see that there is this much interest in creating this world.

I have played both D&D and Magic: the Gathering since each was created. I own everything from Beta cards and Acclaim M:tG comics, to the 1st Edition AD&D PHB to the newest D&D minitures, I am very interested in this forum, hope it doesn't die, and would enjoy helping in any way I can.

I agree with Wizo_Iyala that in order to create this world, 'Nova'... or what's-it-called, it is extremely important that we not forget what it is that makes each (M:tG and D&D) unique, respectively; and that we take those unique elements and use them as the basis of our world-creation process.

On a side note, I have my own web site, and know a few things about XHTML and HTML in case a web site is ever decided upon (and we have enough content to post on it!). I have plenty of storage for pics and the like as well ;):D

Elements (D&D) and Colors (M:tg) can be blurred together somewhat using the MTG color wheel.

I think the color wheel has enough characteristics to help connect some colors to elements and combinations of elements ( blurs )

Like a rainbow where each color melds into the next, the characteristics of both elements and colors could be placed in places where they match.

1: So will one person be culling all the wild ideas thrown around like so many chainsaws, into that website? It would get kinda crazy trying to see what ideas were used and what were not when it's all mashed together in one forum.

2: It would be great to see alot of the old OLD Magic cards come back. Different color border or backing or something so you know it's not a *cough* rare and valuable collector card from the first run. You could rationalize it that some powerful wizard uncovered those spells and died, and his acolytes split up the spellbook loot and ran for the hills. They of course have some modern magic and allies (the newer card sets) but have some nice bits from the old ways of magic.

3. No reason why someone with a standard Magic deck can't play against someone with one of those weird variant deck series IRL. However, in this game world you'd have to give some reason why a clockwork alchemist would be fighting a savage ice age guy. There have been many attempts at doing this mixing of very different types (Mystara anyone? How about Rifts, or any one of a thousand time travel games). I'm sure people can come up with a new way to make it all make sense.

4. IRL you can mix decks like crazy. You won't have the right mana unless you go all colorless from every series ... but in the game world do you want that? Would it be better to have some reason why people tend to use only one type of Magic(cards)? Because if there's no big Reason, then everyone would mix and match any way they could to be more powerful (even in roleplaying. Real people consolidate power if they can).

5. What is the medium here? I've seen people talk about this as a mesh of Magic and D&D, but would you actually think about playing D&D using Magic cards instead of character sheets? Or would the cards supplement the pen and paper system? How would you convince D&D gamers (who would see no problem with using any "card" the DM let their character have even if the player didn't buy it) to buy all these cards? D&D is notoriously cheap. Buy the (3) books and some dice, and you're all ready to go. Maybe a figurine. Maybe pencils. $40 or less from a secondhand bookstore sets up the whole group to play.

6. Is this an official WotC project? I assume all statements made on these forums become the intellectual property of WotC or whoever owns them now. Will we see this on shelves eventually? I think it would be pretty cool to get a game world published as a product of 100+ creative people.

I seem to be confused about the nature of these threads.
Is this a complete conversion of MtG to d20? If so, I feel stupid because I JUST STARTED THAT!

I seem to have been getting the impression that this is a world created by the Wizards COMmunity that is shaped by many of the ideas found in Magic Cards. It isn't "Dominaria" or "Kamiagawa" or "Mirrodin", it's something completly different then Magic Worlds, except influenced by many of the concepts in MtG.

Well I suppose my boards are some distant cousin to this, so we might as well get to know eachother :D .

Just to point out, I don't think that technology is exactly see as a stand alone concept in mtg. I always saw tech in mtg as more of an Eberron-esk where tech was supported by magic. Now, i dont want to imply that this should be exactly like eberron in that respect, but, as eberron showed, you can get alot out of mediocre tech and a generous helping of magic, as long as you use alittle creativity to get around some of the problems.

Just a thought.

p.s. I think that this is a great idea and I will help out in any area my talents can be used.

The purpose of this forum is implied in the title. This is the World Creation Project. The aim of this project is to create a world. The concept is that M:tG players along with D&D players can work together to create this world and then they can convert this world into components for the games they like to play.

It is not meant to take the M:tG Cards and base a world off of them, that has been done already. This is not meant to take D&D things and make cards out of them. Its the other way around. Create the world without influence from either D&D or M:tG and then, fans of either game, can translate the world into the games. D&D players can make character stats, magic item stats, new races, PrCs and pretty much anything else that fits within the game mechanics of D&D. M:tG players can make fantasy cards based off the world which could be used in fantasy decks at game tables that allow for fantasy cards to be used.

Wow, wrong. It looked fine when I got here...
Of course I also leave my view set to all time.. shrug

I cant believe I never posted here?? Sometimes I get distracted and then I presume that I have done something cause I can't believe I didn't do it and well that just keeps going around in circles until I stop and review something for what I said.. actually I was going to make a Summary Point to the Great Idea thread :D I'll do it later.

Somebody asked if someone was going to be recompiling (review/summarizing) the stuff on the WCP.. thats somebody is me. Semi-current (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=398059) and editing regularly.

I don't think we really need a website.. but ...

@Shadow - how about a special dispensation to the "no datastoring" I know these forums have the ability to actually store the images on this server. If any forum (and I know most forums simply can't for a number of reasons) could use and deserve it. Its this one. Perhaps you could simply check my summary everyonce and awhile to locate pertinant items.. I can make a list for you.. I'll check it twice even!

We have already lost a number of things... I think.. or I thought I noticed there were things missing.

Hi Shadow.. you know me "tots" right? Not intimidating.. you am I?

-------

For Smith
1) oh yeah me
2) not a bad idea, you shoulda made a thread man
3) I dont get the point here ...
4} Again ....
5) No "game mechanic medium" other than the ones already in existance.
The idea is the rules stay the same, but the setting is different.
6) Its the "right man" philosophy. Assuming you never see a "world creation project" book or pdf for sale.. you can probably get away with reusing your material, but you are effectivly wittingly "contributing" with all that entails.

Thats why its always a good idea to let the little silly posts go by the wayside

actually

@Shadow/Iyala - why don't those obviously incorrectly placed things like the halfsilverdragonwolf post ever get moved? Seems reasonable. I saw one get zipped the other day... actually.

@Iyala - where the heck are you lady? Long time.. never seen. I have read of your words of times past.. but nothing since the coming of me? Actually something about around a year ago..

@Rny2 and Dindrin - hehe, think this'll do? I honestly thought I had posted here btw.

I'm rather new to the forums, but I'm not new to DnD and M:tG. I have seen it posted that this should be a world without DnD or M:tG influence, that it will influence the two, and I have seen it posted that submissions should not be "rule-intensive", or however it was put. I was wondering exactly what constitutes "rule-intensive"?

Anyway, question aside, this is a great idea, and I think I will be posting here more often. Its a great creative release, helping other people make a world, and it will also be great to see mine and others ideas possibly come to fruition in reality (as in actual M:tG cards and/or DnD books, which is what I have infered may be happening, please correct me if I am wrong). Anyway, happy posting!

Allright this is my first post in this forum, and i've read most of the others you guys, and lady-guys, have been talking about.

I like what you're doing, a lot. I often find myself, whether playing DnD or M:tG that the very start of the game is the most interresting, since you are creating something new. (At least I try to ruffle it up and create new games and play-styles that I don't normally do, just to see what it's like)

But creating this world is a MAJOR thing man. Even if you just stick to the most basic thing, the magic. How will you integrate the M:tG magic into Dnd. I can think of a few solutions, ons coming from the M:tG books that I've read. Wizard have small poches with element bags in, representing lands in a different plane. So your big struggle for more power could be fought against other wizards, or in 'the void' of land magic.

I could go on about that.

But the thing is simple: M:tG is about magic, while DnD is more about the roleplay. Obviously DnD has magic, but what chance do you give a thief, for example, against a magician who just summons up 15 creatures, or less, just a damn Thrasher Beast or Avatar or Life Leech?

So in the end all you will get from the players is a DnD world where everybody is a mage, wizard or sorceror.

The only way I think to still engourage people to play other classess would be an intricate thinking.

I would suggest the creation of a whole new collection of magical items, for one. More specific protections, almost like enchantments in M:tG. But you should be limited to a certain amount that can be worn at a single time, thus enabling fair fights, should you want to, etc.

I think the world should also contain a system of magic that basically enforces rules, like you can't just have people duelling everywhere and mucking the place up, to keep it 'real', there has to be certain areas used for dueling and fighting, or a fight sphere should come into existence from the core of the planet to keep at least a senblance of order.

Not that I care about order, I would stab anybody in the back to take his boots of speed if he wasn't my friend. Hell, I wont even mind poisoning him in his sleep and stealing his mage-book and planar land stash.

I would expect that the planeswalkers of MtG are effectively Epic casters of some sort from D&D, or possibly have had an epic ritual performed on them.

If the concepts from D&D and MtG are to be blended, I would suggest having the actual spell duels take place in a way similar to that suggested in the Forgotten Realms source book for a Mage Duel, and hence the two (or more?) individuals who wish to do battle come together and activate a magical field around them, and then summon figments of the creatures to do battle with each other, as well as throwing spells directly at each other.
To get the mana required the would be duelist has to visit the heart of the relevant mountain, swamp, island, plain or forest, and harvest mana crystals of some sort.
To be able to summon the figment of the creature, either the creature has to willing give you a part of themselves (Generally the more unique/named creatures) or you have to defeat them in combat and take their essence.

Thus, a mid level character could be adventuring in order to go to these sites of power, and obtain relevant creature parts so he too can become a great duelist.

I have a homebrew location that I have been working on with others for a very long time. Would that be helpful here? I do have wikipages on Elftown for the settings and campaigns, along with maps and unique characteristics utilizing different supplemental material from Wizards D&D line.

Will this brewed campaign be something freely accessible, or is this another attempt to form a new world for Wizards to market, like Eberron?

We would absolutely love to see your location, especially seeing as to how there's not too much happening here. A lot of the stuff here begins as homebrew anyways, so we can certainly make a place for Elftown.

Also, does anyone have an update on whether or not we're getting a wiki for the WCP? Again, it'd be a great help for this kind of collaborative project, and might encourage people who have a lot of little things to actually post.

As far as I know, the World Creation Project will be compiled freely online (if it's ever completed), but if we want a print version we'll probably have to pay a minimal fee. In the meantime, check out shea's summaries.

All are welcome to apply to the Guild, and I would love to see some cool networking with some fresh new ideas.

Please check out the links I posted in my last message, and we can do some work on integrating the Wizards WCP Community Project into our current galaxy system. I would love to make some new projects work out, and consolidating my efforts into one healthy group project. I am also hoping to register with the RPGA and begin doing some work on hosting officially sanctioned groups and events.

All right. I am going to focus on the magic angle within D&D:

You do not need to create elemnetalist. The Wu Jen has an elemantal focus and there are several prestige classes who fit the bill. To allow the elements to play a more important part in some countries is also possible within the existing D&D cosmology governing the planes. Areas in countries or even whole countries might exist which overlap or experience seepage from an elemental plane.
Of course such enviromental effect would reflect in the areas culture.

I think I know what you are referring to with the wikipage editing, Comm Poster...

D&D Wiki (http://www.dandwiki.com) ??? I have recently been there trying to learn some of the templates and editing methods for a few new ideas of mine, including my RPGA move into Kingdoms of Kalamar.

As I said before, a wikipage such as those on Elftown is perfect for actually hosting online text adventure games in this manner, and the wikipages are great for hosting content and stats, which is nice to have around.

I am utilizing Kalamar/Tellene info for my RPGA stuff, but I am still looking for ways to put my older content from Jashnia and the Selenar System into use. The way I see it, we would have a tougher time trying to fit D&D Magic schemata into the five-element MtG methods, so this is the primary need of this group in terms of magic and development of systems. Though I personally have MUCH more knowledge of D&D, I can see that this type of categorization will be the more practical and helpful approach. I think we should start there, and work our way further into the d20 mechanics of our RPG material...

Also, I am personally boycotting 4th edition D&D until further notice, and I refuse to give up my RPGA status because of Hasbro's marketing approaches. I am a marketer too, and I do not condone this type of capitolistic behavior in a well-established enterprise with global consumer markets... I am sticking to my well-learned and established 3.5 rules systems, no matter what. Just a random thought...

Green Dragon of D&D wiki is a helpful person to connect with on that site, and I am willing to do whatever it takes to network a coherent group of material composers and testers for this new (yet not really all that new) idea.

Let's do this. Mechanics of stuffing D&D into five elements, then material to add to the stuff on dandwiki.com, then put it all together and test it with some wikipage pages or forums for an online RPG.

As for the wu jen in place of elementalist class(es), we will need to make sure that a wikipage with that OGL content is posted, if there is not one already on dandwiki.com. ;)

I am assuming since this world project is meant to create a world that can be used interchangebly in DnD and M:TG, it needs to capture a certain feel. The feel of the M:TG game in general. A brand new world yes, but it needs the certain quality about it.

When you think of magic, what are the things about it that are most core to the experience? Other than the competitive nature of the game itself, thats a game issue, not a world issue.

To me, what is the most core is tapping mana to cast spells. Only with much work could you adapt that to work with DnD magic and DnD wizards. So, in order to keep the feel of the game alive and well, the DnD magic and DnD magic using classes must be srapped and redone in M:TG's image.

This is how I imagine it. The world is made of magic (Yes I am quoting Brother Bear). This magic permeates the land and makes all things possible. Everything from life to death is caused by this energy. Wizards, sorcerers, clerics, druids, and all other magic users have learned ways of tapping into this source. That is to tune yourself to the free floating mana present in the world. To do this, they must meditate in a certain environment and drink in its energys (game rules: 1 hour, amount drawn is dependant on the quality of the source, how much mana has been drawn by it from other casters, and your caster level). Once it is "tapped", the energy is with them forever until they choose to surrender it to gain a different type of mana. Different spells require different types and amounts of mana to cast. Once they have been cast, the mana used to cast them is 'tapped' for the day and does not replenish until you have slept.

In game terms, the best way to do this is to use a spell point system (like in Unearthed Arcana) and allow you to choose which types of mana your spell points are composed of. A caster with 60 spell points per day might have them be all plains if that is his region of origin and he has never been anywhere else. That means all the can cast are "white" spells, so long as the only costs are white and colorless mana. Once he joins an adventuring party and leaves his home for the first time, he may get the opportunity to align himself to different terrains and learn different spells. He may travel into the mountains and learn a fireball spell from a dwarven wizard and choose to lose some of his white mana for red.

Anyway, I know you are more concerned with world and story than rules, but I felt this needed to be addressed.

Hi All,

A world concept:

The Tablet of Seven:

A Pangaea that is blasted by a super-event say a comet that blasts a hole through the center a circle of land forms with a center tablet. The out part of the circle separates into 6 spokes each of Swamp, mountain, plain, islands, plains, artifice. These have all the characteristics of the other tablets but 1 element is dominant. They are connected to the center by a land bridge.
