| Mak10-31-03, 03:55 AM | I think this needs to be discussed. How will we treat the traditional creatures on this world? Will we keep them as they are, mutate them according to our own wishes, or remove them altogether? I'm talking about dragons, Tolkien-style elves, dwarves... and everything else. I will post a list of all such creatures next week for us to discuss. |
| Mak11-02-03, 11:58 PM | Elf Human Dwarf Ogre Orc Goblin Troll Demon Djinn Dryad Elemental Gargoyle Treefolk Unicorn Vampire Werewolf Wyvern Angel Centaur Dragon Faerie/Pixie/Sprite Griffin Manticore Merfolk Pegasus Serpent Sphinx BUMP!!! Is anyone interested in talking about this? |
| Dream Spinner11-03-03, 12:23 AM | Elves, I think they are all of the elemental variety, but eh, I don't know for sure. Humans haven't really been dealt with. I know I have thought of two possible cultures for them. One absolutely abhores death and thinks of death as sort of a dirtiness that must be cleansed thoroughly lest the sickness spreads. This means a whole teams of priests that swoop down on dead bodies and purges the area, cleaning it until it is purified again. Since there must be those who tend to the dead, there would be a whole class of people that everybody would not interact with at all in fear of being tainted. Got the idea from Shatterglass. The other is the opposite. All of life is devoted to the final moment of death. It is the true climax of one's being, to die. Dwarves are there, but haven't been dealt with yet. They are currently of the normal variety and have yet to have been warped in any way. Orcs have a halfway built culture, nothing specific, but the general feel of their society is sort of made out. Ogres, Goblins, and Trolls have not been touched yet. Demons and Angels, if they are creatures of religion or belief, they will vary from culture to culture. If they are simply beings of good and evil, free from any of the gods, they would be about the same throughout (allowing there being different types of demons and angels), unless we warp them too. |
| Mak11-03-03, 12:28 AM | So we're going to mutate them a bit, it seems. Still, I would like to see some sort of link to tradition, and I think others do too. Elemental Elves are interesting, but can't we also have familiar ones as well? |
| Dream Spinner11-03-03, 12:38 AM | The elemental elves vary from the traditional elves slightly in their appearance (except the water ones, which are liquid and so are very different) and each element varies from each other slightly in culture, but I believe they are, if you don't focus so much on their elemental sides, are not that different from traditional elves. Except the fire ones, which are more like drow.... I think the last two sentences effectively says they aren't like traditional elves at all. Eh. |
| Mak11-03-03, 12:46 AM | I'd like a compromise between mutating them and sticking to tradition, that way our world isn't too distant from Magic and D&D. Also, let's use this thread to start laying claim to races for our purposes. |
| Dream Spinner11-03-03, 01:01 AM | "Laying claims"? |
| Mak11-03-03, 01:08 AM | You know... humans are this, elves are this, dragons are extinct... whoops, that last one was mine.:D Then we can discuss them and negotiate. |
| nick01200011-03-03, 10:59 PM | Without dragons, DnD wouldn't be Dungeons and Dragons! |
| Mak11-04-03, 01:07 AM | I know, I know.:D I've decided not to bring that one up. |
| CatsEye11-04-03, 02:27 PM | Mutate 'em! Take traditional creatures and exaggerate their connotations. For example: Elves - Elves are creatures of nature and magic, and as such have a delicate, fairy-esque quality about them. They have slightly large, oddly hued eyes and have leaves sprouting from their fore-arms and shins. Some may even be part vegetable. Dragons - Dragons are fierce creatures that rule the sky with fiery power. Sporting massivley powerful wings, spindly, reptilian limbs and a long tail that is constantly ablaze, their appearance over the horizon has meant the doom for many a naiton. Angels - Self-righteous do-gooders, appearing as tall humans with a radiant glow, almost looking translucent. A pair of feathered wings adorned their back, and their face is odd in that there is no mouth - an angel does not speak to mortals, merely acting for the side of good in any battle. And so on. Humans, of course, are slightly rat-like in appearence, scuttling away from the light and clawing their way through existence. =P |
| I Am Famine10-09-05, 10:39 AM | I think we should have some new races, but on another note I like the idea of having different versions of the core races according the MtG colors. I could easily see Red, Blue, Green, etc elves fitting in DnD. Also i'll probably create planetouched races for the outsiders I have or will create. Eberron's races often have distant nonhuman blood in them (Shifters, Changelings, etc) so why not have demihuman creatures influence some of core races. How about pale-skinned, seductive, thirsty humans with distant vampiric bloodlines or gentle, wood-dwelling people related to Dryads. Also how about some twists on the monster races. How a majority of Goblins being friendly gregarious creatures that trade and explore, they could be quite cute in a non-kender way!. And so on. Humans, of course, are slightly rat-like in appearence, scuttling away from the light and clawing their way through existence. =P Nah, you thinking of the Skaven... :P |
| the_one_true_shea10-10-05, 01:45 PM | Notice the dates, I dont know what happened to these guys but they put together alot of stuff before they dissapeared. - and it was a fairly abrupt vanishing act too. :???: Goblin as "friendly" nomads - cool! We can continue this discussion on your race questions thread, let these old folk slip back down and off the first page. hmm, thinking of .. yeah - for any who come through this thread later. more recent race discussions (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=255957) questions (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=498460) gonna take some time to collect the clutter. Im putting together a "elemental elves summary" - that concept was split out over a few threads - but there are names and cultures stuff - gods - lots of good stuff for the elven associations. I gonna bring it into one thread with reserved spots at the top for the five elves and a general description of the whole set. Oh, and I say we drop dwarves! Who needs em!? Between goblins, gnomes, and halflings - whatya need dwarves for? reply (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=498460) |
| The Well10-14-05, 04:52 AM | I made this thread before I read Silmarillion. If it were up to me now, I'd throw out all Tolkien influences and start from scratch, for originality. |
| I Am Famine10-14-05, 02:03 PM | I made this thread before I read Silmarillion. If it were up to me now, I'd throw out all Tolkien influences and start from scratch, for originality. I dont think we should entirely obliterate the more traditional creatures, just alter them so much that they seem like entirely different creatures. In another thread I suggested that we revert Orcs to there more fey roots before Tolkien put his 'barbaric stomping boy' spin on them. Orcs from real mythology were more akin to evil fairys and little people than scary evil humanoids. |
| the_one_true_shea10-14-05, 02:31 PM | I made this thread before I read Silmarillion. If it were up to me now, I'd throw out all Tolkien influences and start from scratch, for originality. OLD HAT! :tiphat: Care to kick around a few new ideas? Put some perspectives on things? Any new chronological ideas? ... :shifty: RE: Traditional Monsters "traditional" in this case seems to refer to the "classical" greecian, arabian, and gnostic monsters of myth. This list - *Elf *Human *Dwarf *Ogre *Orc *Goblin *Troll --- > Pulled from western european mythology, the rest here are drawn from mediterrinian and middle eastern mythos. Demon Djinn Dryad Elemental Gargoyle *Treefolk Unicorn Vampire Werewolf *Wyvern (those things the dark riders rode in the two towers and return ) *Angel (Vanyr or something ) Centaur *Dragon (silmirillion and in refrence only ) *Faerie/Pixie/Sprite (Tom Bombodil ) Griffin Manticore Merfolk Pegasus (I think you mean: Giant) Serpent Sphinx Was not created by Tolkien. Only the * ones were even used by tolkien. I'm not exactly oppossed to removing the Real world myth monsters - some like the dragon have to stay. - I like griffons, but thats personal - Merfolk --> "Quoto" - Fey - more of a general Oni/Elohim/Shining Ones. - elementals in some form or another - shapeshifters? The rest seem totally expendable to me. |
| I Am Famine10-14-05, 02:45 PM | The rest seem totally expendable to me. Do you mean like Beholders and Arrowhawk? If so then then yes, the real mythology creatures just need to be given a new (to reverted to their old) context. |
| The Well10-18-05, 03:31 AM | Trouble is, if you return mythical humanoids to their pre-Tolkien versions, most of them become no more than annoying little people. Here's a list of fantasy creatures, drawn from Magic: the Gathering's creature types. Hope it helps. Angel Centaur Demon Devil Djinn Dragon Dwarf Efreet Elemental Elf Goblin Gorgon Kobold Merfolk Minotaur Ogre Orc Pegasus Serpent Shapeshifter Spirit Treefolk Wurm Zombie Behemoth Chimera Hydra Sphinx Avatar Basilisk Cockatrice Dryad Faerie/Sprite Gargoyle Ghoul Giant/Titan/Troll/Yeti Gnome Golem Gremlin Griffin Imp Kraken Lammasu Lycanthrope Manticore Moonfolk Phoenix Roc Satyr Unicorn Vampire |
| the_one_true_shea10-26-05, 09:30 PM | check out me and kirby's list types (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=447135) care to put some commentary? |
| The Well10-28-05, 03:37 AM | (Savors the smell of innocent enthusiasm.) Ahh, I haven't had any of that for a while... Oh no, I've become this forum's WAK! |
| the_one_true_shea10-28-05, 07:14 PM | WAK? Is that a character refrence? or some sort of allusion? I think me and kirby agreed that focusing too much on the breakdowns of types (seeing as the basics would really remain unchanged and the "variety" really seems to be able to take care of itself) was really not that necessary. Particularly since type in M:tG/D20 was rules conversion and not world setting. There are core tyes that are obviously being kept, but at the moment - the door = wide open for manipulation as to what extensions are included. I am a fan of retaining mostly the ones that have been made here. There is already about a quarter of a MM, particularly with famino's contributions. The M:tG seems a little on the shy, but that could change. Not like the WCP is horribly high speed. Like a toy it remindes me of a collection plate for half carved statues, and some are partially painted! |

| The Well12-16-05, 12:38 AM | Please stop bumping this. It's obsolete. (Then again, so is the rest of this board...). |
| the_one_true_shea12-30-05, 09:13 PM | oh stop whining well. An idea this cool can never be obsolete. Its like the most absurd and still awesome Idea I hae ever seen. Whatever happened to the people like leaves and etc? I assume you were here when they left? Just cause I cast breath of life and it worked doesnt mean you should rain on everybody elses parade. hehe. dododo commenting on everything.. pay no attention to me ;) |
