| Obsidianjaerc08-23-03, 04:51 PM | IMPORATNT POSTS THAT I AM CARRYING OVER FROM LEAVES These are all language questions. As far as hissing, I think the main issue is that it is very cliche to have a reptilian race that hisses. This is both - and +. Bad, because cliches are so . . . um, cliche. We don't want our lizard race to be like every other lizard race. Also, people may automatically assume that Virix hiss because they are reptilian, and we'll have to explain that they don't. Hissing could also be good, because everyone will automatically have something about the Virix to connect to. For developing a language style in general (mostly for names), I suggest we come up with the Virix alphabet. An alphabet makes it easy to make sure the Virix names all have the same flavor, and lets you do a simple Virix accent. For example, Japanese has no "L" sound. When Japanese students speak English, they replace all the Ls with Rs, so "I really like lions" becomes "I reery rike rions" (Very approximately!). Instant Japanese accent. So, we already know the Virix have: I R V X (which is really K + S, so we have K and S) Any more letters we want to add? How about some we want to definately leave out? Language Creation Help (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html) MORE Langauge Help (http://www.ancientscripts.com/phonetics.html) -------------------------- FROM ME I imagined that they had a very complex language of perhaps 40 letters ( assuming no capital/small divison and no cursive version). Also I am lean toward a natrualistic language just because non-natrual are so hard to memorize. I also dont think they should have any hard stops. --------------------------- FROM LEAVES I recommend we use lots of the Russian "hushers" especially if the Verix have a hissing voice. Those are the CH, SH, SHCH, ZH, KH sounds. Maybe we could add a couple kinds of "clicks" too. ----------------------------------- FROM CAPTAIN MUTILATE They could have a rune language, but the spoken SHOULD be a mix of clicks and hisses. I could ------------------------------------------- I think any language type(runic , all-cursive, etc.) is good , But if it varys from The King James (TKJ)alphabet ( As it should)( English , French , German , etc) someone will have to put up a page and it won`t be me. ( If it is non-TKG we should work on one letter at a time workig out what it loks like via scanner. But for now lets work on language not alphabet. P.S. I dont think symbolic/heiroglyphic would fit very well. --------------------------------- Lets get to work. |
| Captain Mutilate08-23-03, 07:18 PM | We could use symbols for a written language. |
| Leaves08-23-03, 09:00 PM | Right now it's too early to worry about what the alphabet looks like, we need to figure out what the language sounds like. 95% of people are never going to use Virix script or runes, they are just going to write Virix names and words out in the English alphabet. But we need to know what a Virix word sounds like, so they can all have the same sort of flavor. To use the previous example of Japanese, we all know that Jonathan and Laura aren't Japanese names, because there is nothing like those sounds in the Japanese language. The same way, we are trying to figure out if Bobby or Nickolas are good names or not for Virix tribes and characters. . . I think a question might have already come up: What is the sound of the "X" in the word "Virix"? Is it "KS" like in English? Or possibly "KH" like in Russian and international phonetics? I mention it because Jaerc spoke about leaving "hard stops" out of the alphabet, and I think K is a hard stop (???) |
| Captain Mutilate08-23-03, 11:47 PM | I think having it sound like KS would be good. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-24-03, 12:42 PM | QOUTE I mention it because Jaerc spoke about leaving "hard stops" out of the alphabet, and I think K is a hard stop (???) ---------------- When will my faux-pass stop haunting me. I take it back. We do need hard stops. http://www.geocities.com/leaves_or/jaercsad.txt BTW "K" is a hard stop but could also be classified as a hard start |
| Leaves08-30-03, 04:35 PM | Lol; that's a creative way to spell it. I was thinking that maybe it's just the case that the virix language doesn't have K on it's own, only X. My suggestions for a letters list (in no particular order) V F R GR (a kind of growl in the back of the throat, technically a "voiced uvular trill") H J S Z SH ZH (like the "s" in pleasure) CH KH (from Russian, like the word Kazakhstan) X = "ks" TS N and 5 to 10 vowels That's 15 consonents, plus vowels gives 20 or 25 letters. I left out a bunch of letters, because I'm not sure if they fit flavor-wise, I wanted to get some other people's opinions. B, D, G, K, P, M, T, W, Y aren't on my list yet. Does anybody think they should be included? Does anybody want me to remove something from the list? For general information, I found a cool website that has recordings of different sounds, including all the sounds that aren't found in English: here. (http://hctv.humnet.ucla.edu/departments/linguistics/VowelsandConsonants/course/chapter1/chapter1.html) You click on different parts of the chart to zoom in and hear each letter. |
| Obsidianjaerc08-30-03, 07:29 PM | I would definantly put M if they have lips to do it. P.S. What mistakehttp://www.geocities.com/leaves_or/jaercgrin.txt |
| Leaves09-22-03, 04:14 AM | Okay, I got bored. I was playing around with random name/ random word generators, and I compiled a list of 150 random Virix words. Maybe. aefni arpakh azathoth azhent chathaya charchoesa chas chazuri chinja chuki chukiza churvi dushjani eleza eshogroth fanya farasix ficha fihinshi fikiri grenpteh heethes iheshep ikhanipaeta ithatsa jakogra jana jaribu jicho kaeraju kaexazi kajuka kanes keesho kesho khafra kheriset khezhevt khufu kidole kijanae kinrereeza kipofu kiswachiri kithapa kiwanja kojto korija kosis kukupelekee kusudi kuthali kweetza kwenu laenisha lafajiri lathda lewa lichnoxi lozunvi lugra nagrarixi najit nalikosa narichatse natip naweza neferu nutent nutchi nutheenku onraza pahegregr paneth parekhti parezh paerpazuka parftah parthu paruch paruf patikana peldzineh pendelee pintheza pirinxi pravo priroedno razhdani reelnesh repeh rudisha sataekhoet sehetep sekhem setches setsen shantak sheris shesha shinaetoto shoka shupeh shusha siri skhanra sukari suthulkeeri taka teeyathanov tep thaft thelathini tindaloes tochno tsahere tsarots tsathogru tseta tsezhtut tulisikia turaen ukiftenxa umresh usidzsadiki vanucha varaka vashaeta vesnik vizuri vnizhatelno wakala wanadazhtu wekundu weziesha wiki wintha wokovu xaxak xichlots xinato xoedar xukareete yaekaju yachdor yertseh zangru zhgrarira zherthepa zhekha For this list, I assumed an alphabet of 20-ish consonents (ch, d, dz, f, gr, h, j, k, kh, l, n, p, r, s, sh, t, th, ts, v, w, x, y, z, zh) and 8 vowels (a, ae, e, ee, i, o, oe, u). I actually think there should be two TH letter, one for the sound in thin, and one for the sound in that, but I can't figure out how two write them differently using the english alphabet. I'm not sure DZ should be a letter, either, but I think I might have slipped it into one or two of the words, and it couls easily be just D + Z. Anyway, let me know what you think. Which words sound the most Virix-ish? I figured that, if nothing else, folks can use they for names for Virix tribes or individuals. They don't have to be real words. |
| Obsidianjaerc09-22-03, 08:20 PM | Good job Leaves! I will get back into working on the language soon. |
