Thread for feedback on the "My Characters" module available on your profile page. From the announcement:

Introducing a new way to display your D&D characters on your profile page.  The “My Characters” module allows you to display mini-profiles of your D&D characters in your Wizards Community profile, either by importing details directly from the D&D Character Builder or by manually typing them into a form.

To add this module to your profile page, use the Drag & Drop menu at the bottom left column of your profile page. Click the “on” button. Scroll down to “My Characters” in the list of modules, and click the “Add” button. You can now drag the module into a new position in any column. When you are done, click “Off” to save your changes. Now click “New Character” to start adding characters.

Very nice, and a handy way to share characters with other users.

If I may report a bug, however, it appears to show equipment that my character used to have but no longer possesses, as well as his existing equipment.  Everything else looks good though.

I like it.

I dig it! Now get back to the Monster Builder! ;)

Seriously, very cool addition. However, I can't seem to find it. If I enable drag and drop, I do not see a "My Characters" module. Between which options is it showing up for others? I tried logging in and out, going into the CB to see if it woke something up, etc. No luck so far.

I would say that it needs a place to insert a theme, but otherwise very nice.

Alphastream: Check on your profile, not the "Home" page. It's the very last option to enable/disable.

Well, this is very strange. It seems to have stripped the enchantments from my bard's weapon and armour. He's still fine in the builder, and my monk doesn't have this problem.

For me, I had to turn Drag and Drop on then off befiore it showed up. It defaults to the middle column at the very bottom, below any comments that you may have.

it handled my newest characters fine, the old imported guys from the old, decrepit offline CB were 10 kinds of screwed up.  Then again, I never revisited them in the new CB to fix stuff like the new race modifiers and such so it was probably naive to expect them to not be.

I am not sure where the mistake is coming from: it mistakenly lists lay on hands as a class feature for my paladin, but correctly lists ardent vow as a power.

And once again it would be nice to boost the 20 character limit in character builder.  For those of us who write handbooks, 20 characters is not enough for everything we need to keep up to date.

I think the OCB considers the whole 'Lay on Hands'/'Ardent Vow'/'Virtue's Touch' thing to be a single class feature (that it calls 'Lay on Hands') with just a choice of powers, rather than as three separate class features from which you choose one. IIRC, the appropriate button in the OCB says 'Choose a Lay on Hands option' (rather than, say, 'Choose a paladin special power option').

I think that is right since if I remember right it reads that way in the VT.

I just checked the compendium and it lists lay on hands, and only lay on hands, as a class feature in the compendium.  The paladin entry mentions that you can take ardent vow or virtues touch instead, but doesn't include descriptions of those powers in the entry.  It also says you have channel divinity, but doesn't name or describe the paladin's channel divinity powers anywhere in the entry.

That seemed to do the trick, thank you. I thought I clicked on Profile first and didn't see the drag and drop option, so then I went to the home page and it wasn't a category. I did a lot of clearing cookies and other troubleshooting. When I saw your message and went back to the Profile page I had drag and drop and could turn on the category.

I did find that it was a bit strange in how it operated.

  • It allows me to check multiple characters but only processed one at a time.

  • When processing one I am taken to a screen sometimes showing the character and sometimes blank (shows visual backdrop but no elements). There is an "Update Character" icon which sometimes when clicked showed a blank character screen (again, just background images) and once showed fields where I could edit the character. Regardless, it seemed to import them (but I did not check the fine print for errors)

Ideally we could select as many as we want and import them all at once. Update should be a clear functionality. I don't know what it is really meant to do right now. (If I want to make changes, why not do that in the CB?).

Suggestions:

Make this module accessible from the Home page as well as the Profile page.

Add in functionality to "use" or "expend" certain powers, take damage/healing, etc. So that Play-by-Posters can easily keep track of their characters.

Also, being able to click on a character's power and see a representation of that power card would be nice.

I've noticed some wonky behavior with characters imported from the character builder.

The equipment section seems to inaccurately reflect the current gear of the character. I don't seem to see the names of magical weapons or armor. For example: My barbarian's 'Vanguard Execution Axe +1' only seems to appear as 'Execution Axe'.

Also, it appears to still show old equipment that the characters are no longer in possession of. My barbarian shows that he has two Execution Axes but only really has the 'Vanguard Execution Axe +1' as mentioned above. He also shows that he owns a Greataxe, which I think was an accidental purchase in the builder which I immediately sold back quite some time ago. So apparently it is displaying historical data with regard to equipment.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I've directed the CB developers to this thread, so they can determine whether any of these are arising from unknown issues.

Very nice.  I just got done playing with this.   Thumbs up!

Developer notes: on nearly all of my characters, they lost some magic weapons, off-hand implements and armor during the import...  Everything else was up-to-date on the import feature, including my one DDI character who I just added the Scholar theme to (Use Knowledge is going to fuel quite a few opening round beatdowns for my eladrin mage...)

I'm using the manual form.

Why is the automatic form not using a little XML functionality? I mean, is it really that hard to have it figure out Ability Modifiers and Bloodied Levels? I don't mind entering manually, but this has less functionality than my excel sheet, and I find that silly.

That's pretty slick. A nice little bell to add to your profile.

It would be nicer if you could easily share your actual characters with others.

This was mentioned a LONG time ago when CB was a hot topic. It could be as simple as a checkbox within CB called "share character" that would give you a CharacterID number that others could use to import/view that character within CB. It is obvious that the information is centrally stored in such a way that it should be easy enough to share.

If you wanted to go an extra step, you could have a web interface to view the character similar to what you've done here for the profile.

Very cool feature, I'll concur with the poaster above that it would be cool if it automatically updates when you make changes in the builder.

The other thing that might be cool is to give characters a catergory heading. Like:
- Homecampaign
- LFR
- Encounters
-Ashes of Athas

That way organizers can quickly see what characters someone has and what levels they are.

I'm dying here.

What's going on with the virtual gaming table???

This looks like it could be an important part to it, but, ug, my game is rapidly approaching a time where the battle mats are not going to be big enough for my 6 players. rptools.net is nice, but I'm hoping you guys do better.

Those character sheets do look pretty, though.

I don't really see the point or use for this feature, I'd much rather you dedicated time to fixing the outstanding bugs in the Character Builder

Here is my feedback:

Are you 'effing kidding me?!?!?!  You *waste* time with a "social media" connections when you *still* have *not* come up to the standard of the old desktop character builder!?!?

Where are the custom powers?  Ability to houserule for more powers?  Custom feats?  Ability to houserule for more feats? Custom magic items?  Import your own artwork?  Just to name a few features that are **still** missing from the online CB.

Good lord....  I am stunned that you wasted development time with this garbage while still shafting people with **less** product than you did before.  Un-be-lievable....

Hi, CrowOfPyke.

As an FYI...

All development on this social site--the forums, profiles, blogs, etc.--is done by Onesite, which is a completely separate, independent company.

Steve

Thanks.

This seems like a great addition to the community site for us D&D'ers!

I'm going to throw my hat in with the others that say the equipment section is a little off - seems like it's loosing the enhancement bonuses and enhancements from the weapons/armor.

Other then that, everything seemed to import correctly for my character at first glance. I'll do a more through check on the stats and such  in a while.

Some add-ons I'd like to see:

  1. A way to share these characters on the forums, or on the groups. Perhaps this takes the form of an embed code or a wiki code that we can just copy/paste, or else something similar to the "import magic deck" option present on the forums. For now, those among us that know a bit of code can iframe them into wiki pages, but it would be nice to have a little built in functionality.

  2. Active links to all the powers, items, feats, etc in the compendium - in a clean AJAX'ed way. So when you click on the name of a power, it brings up a modual window with the compendium entry for that power. If the character was entered by hand it could possibly bring up the entries description as entered by the user (and allow HTML/CSS here so we can format it to a power/item/feat!)

Other than that, this is a huge step toward making this community site a great asset for us D&D fans!

I am not offered the option either.
