#1 emwasick May 18, 2012 19:04:09	I apologize if this has been brought up before, but people quoting loooooooooooooooooooooong posts only to say, "Yeah, me too!" is pretty annoying to me. It's bad enough when someone quotes someone who has 5 nested quotes in his post and then only adds one sentence to the discussion. But at least that person is just using the features of the forum somewhat poorly in a real effort to contribute to a discussion. It's literally worthless when someone quotes a really long post in its entirety just to say, "Another human shares your view." Can we do something to make threads more readable when it comes to excessive and pointless quotation?

I wouldn't be sad if quoted text had a maximum value as well or if some kind of super-cool ratio were instituted. But really anything that makes people stop and think before they repost some 2,000 word post with, "Me too!" or "Straight up!" as a reply is a good thing to me.

#6 salla May 20, 2012 11:06:12	I'd think an easier solution would be to get rid of the multiple nesting.  The other gaming forum I'm on regularly won't nest; if you quote a post with a quote in it, the previous quote doesn't appear.

I think Quote Towers only became possible as of Gleemax, though you could manually generate them in the Old Days.  I admit, I can't remember exactly when it changed, but the change has been a mixed blessing at best. As to new text having to excede quoted... I suppose that would encourage more quote-snipping at least, leaving only the relevant details to which one wants to reply, but all too often I find myself wishing to provide a reply of a substantial fraction of the origional's length, to the whole of the origional.   There's a reason rebuttals and replies are often given less time in formal debate than the initial case, though of course that always depends on the exact rules of the format.

I don't think there's an easy formula per se. I could reply with, "Tevish_Szat's post exhibits much wisdom and perceptiveness," when you write 1,000 words in reply to 6 nested quotes. Over 10 characters, but still a non-contribution and not worth clicking "submit" IMO.
