egoistically you lose 1 and you gain 0
normally you gain 0 and you lose 0
courageously you gain 1 and you lose 1
heroically you gain 2 and you lose 1

second, there are 3 scales:
the points
the levels
the ranks

third, depending on the situation, you can act four ways and gain/lose in the corresponding scale;
this way, imagine you act heroically in the realms of pure Logics and detrimental to your Hearts, having Rank 5 Logics and Rank 3 Hearts and the situation being "dramatically appropriate" as in Star Wars d6 use of Force points (i.e. you aim the Rank number rather than the level or one mere point) would make you update your Logics to Rank 7 (that is, a rough 80000 points from 320, that's just like win the lotto) and drop your Hearts to Rank 2 (that is a loss of upto Level 15 - Level 4, 32-2=30 point loss)...
