An Editorial Policy is Needed on 5e

So, the New York Times is reporting that Wizards will be announing an open playtest of Fifth Edition today.

Prior to this, the editorial policy has been that all discussion of 5e would go into RPGs General Discussion.  I think we can expect a flood of threads about 5e in 4e General Discussion, Future Releases, and lots of other forums.  Are we going to move all those threads to RPGs General?  If WotC announces a 5e, does that now mean we put that stuff into Future Releases?  Are we creating a forum for the open playtest of 5e?

I agree. It's gonna get crazy.

I see there is a D&D Next Group.  Since we can't move threads to that group, should we (and by "we", I mean "you") close 5e threads and include a link to the D&D Next Group?

i think thats a crappy idea and gives the impression of stifling conversation on the biggest announcement in years. my view is you should for once not move every thread to a niche forum and leave 5e threads in gd, where they belong

I'm definitely not stifling conversation. Somehow we keep forgetting that the "general" forum is actually "4E General." This definitely isn't talk of 4E. For now, conversations about the next iteration of D&D go in the Future Releases forum. The forum is very easy to find - it's near the top if you're looking in the drop down lists, and it makes perfect sense why something about D&D's future would go there.

If things change I'll let you guys know.

Why are you so resistant to letting 4e general be what it is rather than what it was originally intended to be?

The forum has grown into something useful, picking it apart at the seams and breaking up conversations doesn't strike me as benefiting anyone.

[Sarcasm on]It's so they can post ORCS with trucheons and riot shields around that forum to suppress any and all up risings...[/sarcasm off]

5E Threads should go in Future Releases.

I can see how the "future talk" (my term for it) on the 4E General forum would lead someone to want to continue in that line of conversation with the 5E announcement.

However, now that it's official, some sort of order should be imposed.

The policy doesn't mean people can't somehow keep talking about 5E, it just means they ought to go to Future Releases to do it.

Besides, if you can turn your computer on, open a browser, log in to the forums and find your way to 4E General, then you have all the manual dexterity skills necessary to navigate to the Future Releases forum anyway. Not that big a deal.

The VCLs in the MtGo forums back when the game went from 2.0 to 3.0 and we kept a thread open in General and compiled many of the off-shoots either to that thread or one in a forum such as this one.  Yeah, it was a lot of work and monitoring and we probably drove the ORCs crazy with thread merge requests, but it kept the topic in the most visible area of the forum.

I respectfully submit a similar action here.

Well since 5E is now a reality, why not just have a 5E General discussion area?

makes sense, after all when 5e comes out the logical thing to do is dump every 4e thread in practically every forum to the 'legacy forum' (aka the basement, aka sub forum #428)

I would like to have a 5e board, but.... they've got a group for it.

So as such, all 5e threads should go to Future Releases, since it's an actual Future Release now.

Trevor has announced that 5e threads now go to Future Releases.

Well I am shocked.

So Trevor, last week when I was arguing that 5e should be in FR, did you know that a new iteration of the game was in the works?

It doesn't matter. He's under a NDA to discuss such things. It's been a standing policy that Future Releases is for announced products, not what may or may not be in the works.

Whoa.  Future Releases has always been the place to speculate about releases that haven't been announced.  Most of the threads in that forum, before the 5e announcement, were speculations about products people would like to see announced, but haven't been.

5e was the exception because it wasn't for the current edition.  Now that 5e has been announced, that exception is being revoked.  But that doesn't mean Future Releases is not a place where people can speculate.  It's just that before today, they couldn't speculate there about 5e.

And Trevor did nothing wrong.  The NDA prevented him from revealing 5e, so he had to proceed as if 5e wasn't happening.  Which is fine.

The next edition of D&D has been announced, so there are no rules or anything. The release date is not even known yet, nor are *any* of the base assumptions that have been chosen as the foundations for the building of the next edition.

In addition, there is a D&D group (I will edit in link later) where people can discuss it. D&D NExt is the name of the group I believe.

Until such time as the next edition is released, it can go in Future Releases or the group.

I suppose it should be said that while discussing 5e on the Future Releases board is fine, the best way to get the developers to read your post is to join the group, and post in the group. That's where I believe they'll be looking at the most for ideas. (AFAIK.)

Is that the group that mudbunny mentioned? I just want to make sure that if I start posting long rants about what I would like to see, I at least put it in the right place so it is more likely that someone important will actually see it.

Here's a question. Should we just leave the 5e threads currently in the general RPG forum, or should they now be moved to Future Releases?

I'm not suggesting moving every single one, just the top handful of them.

#22

I say move the ones that would stay on the first page.

Hypothetical: 5e comes out, 4e fans hate it; what would be our "Pathfinder"?
So, I hear 5E is in the works...
Lessons from Magic: The Gathering for D&D 5e.
Will there even be a 5e worthy of being an actual new edition?
#23

bone_naga

I think the old ones should stay where they were. The old threads tended to spark arguments about whether or not 5e was really coming, whether or not it was really needed, and all of that would detract from any real discussion about what 5e should contain. I think enough new ones will be starting up that anyone who had legitimate opinions in the old threads can repost them there, and will probably be better served since they and others won't have to wade through as much other crap to see the relevant posts.

EDIT: I recognize some of the ones from Wrecan's post that seemed calmer and it some of them had unique enough topics that it might warrant their move. The exception I would say would be the "What would be 4e's Pathfinder" thread, not that it shouldn't be moved, but that it should be in either 4e General or GSL as the real topic there is the possibility of 3pp 4e material, rather than 5e.

Like it's that hard to just make a forum section called, TALK ABOUT 5E here. Yeah, some people will miss it for a while and post in the wrong area. You know, like how things currently still happen, regardless of how long the forums have been around or they have been on the forums.

Sheesh. Seriously, SHEESH.

So it turns out that there is a technical limitation that is being bumped up against here. The goal is to minimize splitting of discussions between forums and the group. They are discussing what steps they will take currently.

I can understand that, I just don't understand the point of having the group then if all the discussion is actually taking place in the forums.

If the group gets its own forums (which could still be beneficial), I think maybe it would be best to have them structured in different categories instead of a general "put all 5e stuff here" and then the mass of threads pushes stuff off the page within a few hours, and an effort made to consolidate duplicate threads together. Or you could just do that stuff with the existing forums.

A group is more than the forums.  It has a wiki.  You can send broadcasts.

Moreover, for now, when next to nothing has been made public about 5e, there's no good way to organize forums.  Maybe, when we know more about 5e, it will make sense to separate them.  Pateince, grasshopper.

This was the same thing that WotC did with the release of Magic:Online 3.0   They buried it in a group rather than keep the discussions in the forums.

It was as disappointing then as it is now.

The discussion is taking place in both.  It's in the forums, which is mirrored automatically in the Groups.  I really can't see what the objection is.  It's not buried.  It's in the third forum from the top!

Exactly. Right now everyone is just trying to shout as loud as they can in hopes that their preferences will go into the new rules (even though it sounds like the design team already has a pretty good idea of what they're going with). Once those rules are made public, whoever feels that it didn't pay enough tribute to their favorite edition/playstyle will start trolling and flaming again.
