Captcha? Really?

I guess people are concerned with SPAM, but ugh. I just responded to a blog post, and that's the last time I will until that Captcha garbage is gone. It's amazing how the innocents always have to pay the price for the actions of the guilty.

Yeah, it's a rant, but it's irritating. Captcha is bad enough on web forms, but if I have to fill one out just to make a comment on a blog then I've got no desire to bother.

really, if you don't have the 5 seconds of time to spare to fill that stuff out, your reply probably has nothing of importance in it anyway...

I have to agree with whitebaron, though with less snark. Tongue out

I don't know why they haven't implements captcha for posting a blog in the first place, though.  I assume that's coming.

Having to fill out three different sets of it, on the other hand... quite annoying.

If people are fine with it, then that's great for them. I'm not. It's irritating.

I already spend significantly less time on the WotC Community pages (and time spent is dropping for me every day) but if Captcha comes to the forums as well, I'll never post here again.

Any time I hit a site that requires Captcha to continue I debate whether I care enough to continue. More often than not, my time is more precious than anything I want to do on the site. So yeah, I guess maybe what I have to say isn't that important on the WotC Community blogs, but honestly, what is actually important on them? It's a discussion of a game. No one is solving world hunger, or curing AIDS or cancer here.

And now I'm just wasting time writing about wasting time. Bleh.

I suppose the only obvious question is: how long to you spend considering?

Heh, in this case, not much time at all. I haven't bothered to read a blog post in days. So this Captcha thing soured me on even reading the blogs (not that I was a huge fan in the first place, but I was giving them a chance to grow on me.)

I was one of the bloggers pushing HARD for captcha. Mostly because I was tired of seeing blog entries I had worked on vanish to page 3. It's not perfect as there is still heavy spamming (and a looooong delay before caught and suspended spammers have their blogs deleted) and the captcha doesn't pop-up every time, but it's nice to know it's there cutting-down on the spam.

Captcha  takes less than a minute and means whatever you write is visible for hours instead of minutes. If you want *anyone* to ever see your blog, captcha is the way you'll be noticed.

That's odd, because I could've sworn I saw a post about some new miracle cure the other day.  Tongue out

true. pages with only 2 non-spam blog posts are sadly not uncommon ...

But I really don't get it ... what's the big deal? That you need to type the letters you see? Is your time that precious to? What in heavens blazes do you do with your time?

oh? you would be supprized. on forums like these (I don't remember if it was WotC community or an other DnD forum), I've seen people making threads for things like folding@home.
No, we don't solve world honger or AIDS, but thanks to communities like this we do solve Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, mad cow disease, cancer, Huntington's disease, cystic fibrosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, ...

If the blogs are kept clean, more people will see the blog post, and if that blog post is helps to cure cancer ...

My complaint was that I had to do this three times.

As I said above, my guess is that the Captha contract requires a certain amount of verification traffic to keep its relationship with the spell-checking company (Google?) at the current rate terms, and the multiple confirmations was triggered to ensure this.

OK, but is " quite annoying" what you were looking for?
Quite annoying is for me, when its very cold, and my bike's tires are flat, that I'll need to walk. or when I when I accendently walk in a deep puddle of water, making my shoes, socks and feet wet.
Typing captch 3 times isn't even a 'sigh' (as in 'sigh, of course my password is wrong: capslock is on')

Yes. Quite annoying for multiple reasons:
The first time should be sufficient to prove I am not a bot.
The second time *might* be because of a mistype, but not the third.
Nothing indicates you might have to do it more than once.
Nothing indicates how many times you will have to do it.

If this were a case of client-side PEBKAC, no problem. But this appears to be a server side annoyance.

I don't really want to spend too much time talking about this at this point because it's becoming a bit self-defeating, but there is a point I'd like to make clear.

Captcha is extremely annoying to me. And yes, I typed that correctly. I'm not a big fan of blogs to begin with. I don't do things like Facebook or MySpace. I follow people on Twitter because it's on my phone, so I have something to waste time with at work, or while waiting on line at a store. The only social media I actively enjoy interacting with are message board forums. It's the focused-topic conversations I pursue. (And don't bother with the meandering thread jokes, I know already.)

I was willing to give the blogs a shot because I thought maybe they'd give something like that. Of course, there are also groups, which combined with everything else is just overload to me. I want to discuss topics, but I don't want to spend my entire life in front of a screen. If I have to deal with something like Captcha as the price to interact, it's just not worth it to me.

So, in the end, while the fight against SPAM is great, (because SPAM is incredibly irritating itself,) the solution only serves to turn me off from the entire experience. Which was my entire point in the first place. I hate that it's always people who are acting legitimately who pay the price for the ones who don't. If it's a good option for others, great. The fact is, I was going to be a hard sell anyway.

Captcha hasn't bothered me so far.  I don't blog (or respond to blogs) all that much, but it's not been an issue for my forum activities to go through that extra step.

I look at it like a scale. Captcha takes me a second or two to fill out but saves a lot more of my time by filtering out spam bots.

Also, I haven't had this issue. Every time I've posted to a blog it's only been one Captcha.

You shouldn't have had to. From what I understand, you should not normally be asked for multiple CAPTCHA tests. (Unless, of course, there's a tpyo or something.)

However, it seems that there's something buggy with the CAPTCHA system, because a number of people have said that they can't seem to get through it at all. What you encountered may have been a similar problem, or maybe the same one cut short somehow.

I too have not had multiple Captcha requirements for over a week.
