changing thread OPs

Mar 26, 2009 16:15:24 I am curious as to what people think about others changing the OP and the title to threads that have reveived quite a number of posts.

I can think of two instances.

In one, the poster who originated the thread didn't like the way some parts of the OP was being responded to. So, after about post 64 the originator changed the OP and added a disclaimer that certain things would be reported as off-topic...

In another one, the originating poster did not like how the thread was progressing and so the OP was changed to something else as well as the title (post 38). The originator then restarted the original thread under basically the same title.

I had just blown this off until I encountered a problem today. In a thread discussing how different arguments how countered/received (sort of...) I wished to transfer a quote from the second thread listed above.

The problem is that the second thread contained a quote within a quote. A quote was transferred using the quote (with the original inner quote added...) rather than using the edit button. so, if I hit the button to get the quote and paste it into the second thread I would get nothing. When I used the 'blue thingy' to go to the original quote in the original thread it had been edited out and had no qute to access. Still it would be possible to offer a link to the post using the post function and then copy/paste the part I wanted, but that is a pain.

That has brought me to the more important bit I am curious about. what are the rules on doing such things and what does everyone think about it?

My opinion is that if posts are off-topic they should be reported and cleaned up if necessary.(Is a thread more likely to get cleaned than closed if the only complaint is being off-topic? I am making an assumption that it is.) Starting a new thread makes it a pain on those who have posted already not to mention it serves as a way to remove counter arguments by wording the OP in the new thread to try and 'cut them out'.

My point is that it is difficult to read and respond to threads when the originator (not me) performs the actions I described above.

I asked how people felt about those things being done and I asked whether those things were against the CoC.

As a side note, commenting on whether I worry too much has nothing to do with the anything I mentioned or asked about.

Maybe not, but he's right. Especially the last part. "If you feel something is off topic or against the coc, report it immediately." It's short, sweet, and to-the-point. If it's off-topic or against the CoC, the mods can handle it if you report it. If it's not, they'll leave it alone. While I have little to no faith in any kind of moderation on these forums, I do know that the mods respond to reports. If they do not act on a report, then they obviously do not feel it deserves their attention.

But, I do not know what the rules are on this particular circumstance nor do I nkow the general view of the community.

1.) I am curious about the views of individual members of the community on this matter.

2.) How can I be expected to properly word a report if I do not know wha tthe actual rules on the matter are?

Seeing as how the ability to access my questions at CS has been down since the PHB2 CB update, it will not do me very much good to ask community management. I mean I can submit questions/conduct reports and the my stuff page will show whether or not something is solves but I cannot actually update or view responses. I get some form of page screwup (expired? I'm not quite sure...) So, I am at a loss for answers.
