Watching the video though really did make a difference. Kudos to whoever did that video.
All in all a good sounding idea, I think it has a good potential to get new blood in the game. In the end, it is dependent on a good store location and a DM that knows how to do a game meant to convince people to come back the next time.

I think the whole process could likely be quite good for retail outlets that can accomadate players in store playing.
Thing is they run off the efforts of a willing DM who is either good or bad or likely somewhere in the middle.
I've heard complaints here on the forums that seem to indicate the DM running them was not overly effective.
These encounters are a promotional tool for the most part. A means to an end, the end being to liven up sales.
Having people show up for an encounter, and being systematically wiped out all for the sake of a blown dice roll at the beginning, well I would likely flat out tell the DM he wasn't much good at the job of promoting the game as was likely more harm than good.
If I was the retailer, I'd likely ask him to not bother in the future to offer his time.
Encounters bereft of preamble role play in the reason for why the encounter occurs need to realize that if the encounter is just to be the encounter, it needs to be a balanced process where there IS a better chance of actual fun resulting.
I've not seen any of the encounters. Can't claim to state whether they are well made or not. But even a poorly executed encounter can be corrected by a DM worth having provide the DM's function.
Having the group all die in the span of the first few dice rolls is epic fail on the DM's part.
I wish I had the balls to go to one of these by my self, I mostly play with my buds but when I get to them, It's for like the entire day. And I only play with them like twice a month, but I'm constantly craving for more D&D lol.
