| #1Titanium_DragonAug 13, 2009 2:27:18 | Some "new" user (read: troll who made another forum account) under the name of SmitingBear sent me a fairly generic looking whining PM which contained a link to a malicious website under the guise of being a post there I should read. I don't remember exactly how to report such things to the moderators, so if one could help me get that to the right place, that'd be great. I just thought it might be wise for me to tell folks in case he sent it out to more than one person. While fortunately the page didn't affect my computer directly, it did attempt to open a lot of malicious processes and opened itself many times. Someone who used a different browser could well be vulnerable to the page causing their computer damage. |
| #2WebsterAug 13, 2009 2:30:29 | Use the contact us link at the bottom of the page. |
| #3Titanium_DragonAug 13, 2009 2:39:49 | Thanks. Is there any way for you to check if anyone else got similar messages from him? If there is and you can get rid of them, there's no reason to keep this post up. |
| #4calronmoonflowerAug 13, 2009 2:55:27 | thanks for the warning. |
| #5Titanium_DragonAug 13, 2009 3:07:25 | This thread indicates this user is the same as Smitezilla. If so, I'd recommend not opening any links from that user either. It'd probably be wise to check any URLs before clicking on links in PMs from users you don't know well for a while, and/or any brand new user. |
| #6mnemonicsvAug 13, 2009 3:13:27 | Good to know. I do find it sad though... that any poster would start taking a message board discussion about a game (of all things!) so seriously as to attempt to damage the personal property (the computer) of someone who disagrees with their views. I sincerely hope that any individual who makes such attacks regularly posts from a static IP address. |
| #7WebsterAug 13, 2009 3:21:15 | As I said, report it to CS. (I'm not on duty so can't log in.) |
| #8Titanium_DragonAug 13, 2009 3:51:53 | I did report it. Sorry for bugging you Webster. |
| #9WebsterAug 13, 2009 6:34:14 | No bother at all. It's just that the ORCS can come down hard and much faster when it's reported. |
| #10samyueruAug 13, 2009 6:35:36 | Thanks for the heads up TD. Glad your computer didn't get damaged. |
| #11Seeker95Aug 13, 2009 6:38:54 | Thank you for the warning. Reporting (to take care of the offending poster) and publicly warning (to protect other members) is a good thing. I appreciate it. |

| #14Titanium_DragonAug 13, 2009 13:13:06 | I got the message for him too.. too bad i didn't see this discussion before i clicked the link.. oh well.. i do IT support for a high school.. it is no worse than anything i have seen the 8th graders trying to look up... Yeah, I thought it was trying to load stuff onto my computer, but it turns out the processes it was actually trying to run weren't malicious (well, at least not in the "wreck your data" sense) but rather more of a "crash your computer/cause it to hang" type thing. If you DID click on the site, it shouldn't cause your computer any lasting damage. |
