| #1ethangilsdorfNov 16, 2010 12:37:16 | Hi all Hope this is OK to post here. I'm the Boston-based author of book FANTASY FREAKS AND GAMING GEEKS: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms (Lyons Press, now out in paperback). I've teamed up with another author, Tony Pacitti, author of MY BEST FRIEND IS A WOOKIEE: One Boy's Journey to Find His Place in the Galaxy (Adams Media), cuz both of our books are coming-of-age tales set against the backdrop of Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons obsessions --- and ultimately are quests to make peace with our geeky pasts and accept our "inner geeks." We have some events coming up in the next two weeks in NYC and Providence, RI, plus Geek Mom and I are running a geek poetry contest with a deadline of this Friday, Nov 19. Hope you might be interested. More info: www.fantasyfreaksbook.com
Monday, November 22, 7:30pm - 8:30pm Celebrate all things geek and nerd with Ethan Gilsdorf (Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms) and Tony Pacitti (My Best Friend is a Wookiee: One Boy's Journey to Find His Place in the Galaxy), moderated by Rebecca Carroll (former managing editor of PAPER). Gilsdorf’s Fantasy Freaks is a road trip through fantasy and gaming subcultures, from Dungeons & Dragons gamers and live-action role-players, to Harry Potter wizard rockers and World of Warcraft players. Pacitti’s memoir is the coming-of-age story of certified geek and official Jedi Knight wannabe framed around Lucas’ epic Star Wars. Moderated by Rebecca Carroll, former editor at PAPER. Doritos and Mountain Dew will be on hand, as required for any truly geeky gathering. I hope you might be interested and can help spread the word to gaming/geek-friendly in the NYC / Brooklyn area. More info: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=158793007... Thursday December 2nd, 7-9pm Another panel discussion featuring Gilsdorf and Pacitti (author of My Best Friend is a Wookiee: One Boy's Journey to Find His Place in the Galaxy), followed by a concert by the evil wizard rock band Draco and the Malfoys. More info: http://www.provcomlib.org/ 3) Write geek-themed poem, win geeky book Now is the time when geek pride meets the poetic. We're hoping you'll dust off your quill pens to jot down a geek-themed poem and post it on Geek Mom (see instructions, below). Compose an "Ode to Harry Potter." Dash off the "The Ballad of Gary Gygax." Or perhaps a "World of Warcraft War Chant" or "Balrog Haiku" speaks more to the muse of your geekery? Be it free verse, a limerick, a sonnet, a haiku, or a villanelle or rap --- no matter, as long as it speaks of geekdom, pick the subject that will bring out your best. (No need to rhyme, either.) If we choose your poem (there will be five winners), you'll get an autographed, personalized copy of Ethan Gilsdorf's road trip through geek subcultures, Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks: An Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms, www.fantasyfreaksbook.com , now in paperback.
