I find your choice of phrasing strange: it suggests that it is possible for Gleemax to not suck.
Theoretically it is possible. In truth however, Gleemax has always stunk-- to high heaven ;).
I'm getting "database error" more often than not while trying to surf the boards the last few days. That is, when the boards are up at all. This does not exactly inspire confidence for a glowing future of our *beloved* Gleemax.
Ah well, if I gotta complain about something it might as well be glitchy boards.

Didn't even get the error page, just a blank white page with a database error.
I'm think now would be a great opportunity to post a fresh, new, and exciting picture on the "Boards Are Down For Extended Unplanned Maintenance" screen. The current one is gettin' old fast ;).

Even assuming they're working full tilt on getting the D&DI up and running, I can't help but be concerned that *whatever* they're doing seems to be having a very adverse effect on these boards. How did all this internet technology become so dependent on each other? In any case, there's no way this standard operating proceedure.
I honestly believe WotC is in over their heads (for whatever reason) and very soon will have to make some kind of admission to that effect. At least I hope they will, because otherwise I worry 4e is going to suffer, possibly in unexpected ways. At this point, too much effort is going into a seemingly failed (or at best, subpar) project. I wish they'd make the hard decision to cut their losses and focus on what they do best, printing D&D core rules and supplements.

G_Z elsewhere has cited 3 different problems that are causing the board errors.
-Database corruption/failure
-Hardware failure
-Increase of users
Let's take them in order.
1- maybe Gleemax has introduced thing in a manner that the database wasn't meant to handle. After a while you need extra servers to handle the load. This also gives you a database backup, so when one need repairing you can switch over tot he other while repairing the one. Then at nightly maintenance you can copy the good database over to the bad one.
2- See #1, also buy new hardware. With higher loads servers tend to expire quicker.
3- DDI was advertised in the core books. People are looking for it. Also with the first two problems even a lesser number of users would cause the server problems.
Guess not even having enough servers to run the forums means DDI may be in a bit of trouble. I wonder how many servers maintain MtGO?

It makes that I will give that a very wide berth for a long time, before I might get any confidence in WotC's ability to support something like that. (see also earlier e-Tools history)
