These 3 forums include the following 4 things:
1 House rules - changing the rules of the game.
2 Designing new content - adding to the rules of the game.
3 Creating new characters - looking for advice on the builds.
4 Theoretical optimization - discussing game-breaking loopholes
1 and 2 occur in the house rules forum
2 and 3 occur in the character building forums
3 and 4 occur in the character optimization forum
It seems to me that these forums should be more clear in what goes where.
Definitely nothing should be split between two forums.
1-2 and 3-4 should definitely be separated. There are arguments for and against 1 and 2 being separated and 3 and 4 being separated.

My personal favorite would be:
House Rules
Custom Classes & Powers
Custom Feats, Races, and everything else
Build Advice
Theoretical Optimization
Split up as needed.

Agree? Have another idea? Completely hate me and think it's perfect as-is?

The Character Building forums should be left as is. That is, split into each role, because:

- They all get a ton of traffic, merging them would create a forum that is way too busy

- Classes in the same role share many mechanics

- There will be even more classes under each role when the PHB2 is released

The CB forums are reaching a point that the traffick guidelines say some may need splitting.

Wizards forum right now is alone, but as more controllers appear, that forum may need splitting. The 4 basics roles will need to be split in the end to sort the classes out I am sure. That or implement changes to the forums AFTER gleemax has been removed, and AFTER the forums are returned to stability.

Each of those role forums should have an additional selection in them to allow for tags.

Ranger, Rouge, Warlock, General in some kind of dropdown list so you can/must include it so that people can sort or better find threads relating to the specific classes they may currently be interested in viewing.

Of course that days worth of work for a single IT professional would be too much for WotC to handle, but after the 2 previous problems get sorted out, which shouldn't be long now that people have time to devote to repairing the forums, then the coding can be done quickly and make major improvement to the forums to make WotC have a good functioning forum for its audiences.

Of course other forums may need there own taging systems, but that would be something best suited for those forums to decide upon in this mass product environment.
