How can you ad people to your ignore list... when you can't even open there profile so you can hit "Ignore this person"

If you get a blank page when you get to someone's profile, just keep hitting refresh. It will eventually open up, and then you can add them to your ignore list. It is a known bug/error on the WotC website that they are looking into.

-> My Account
-> My User Control Panel
-> Buddy / Ignore Lists

Enter the name manually on the bottom and hit the save button.

When you put someone on your ignore list the effect is that their posts simply don't appear on threads? Is there anything like "Post from ignored user here."? Or dos it just make conversations confusing?

-From what I have been told, it basically puts the ignored persons' post in something akin to an SBLOCK box, and, if you want, you can click on it, and see what they said. Something to that effect.

Yes, putting someone on your ignore list doesn't mean you can never read their posts. Just click "View Post".

Which really just makes it more of a dramatic gesture than anything else, since most people who "ignore" others probably go ahead and read all of the offending person's posts anyway.

Except it's not dramatic at all because nobody knows you've done it unless you tell them so, which is apparently considered baiting.

Overall, there doesn't seem to be much point to it unless someone's posting grotesque images that you don't want to look at or flooding your PM box.

Generally what I do when someone is being a dork, is invite them to continue the conversation via PM...and then put them on the ignore list.
