I love how a thread talking about what is wrong with allowing sockpuppets etc, and the ineffective mods on these boards can get derailed by a sockpuppet (he has all but admitted it on another thread...) and then gets locked by the same mods because of the derailment.. but somehow the valid complaints still fall on deaf ears....
Kind of just shines a light on the whole thing.

Really, it comes down to whether the thread continuing is more valuable than confronting the troll about, well, being a troll. Honestly, I think that's really a situational call, especially given the state of moderation around here. As evidenced by the last thread, they're more than willing to shut it down with 0 interaction between trolls and non-trolls (at least in terms of non-trolls responding).
I don't really have any magical way of avoiding them getting your goat. At least until we actually start seeing some meaningful bans, but then we probably won't need these threads.

He doesn't get my goat. None of them do anymore. Its more a matter of principal, that being "you don't get to pull that ^%## in here without something being said about it". I know exactly the game they are playing, but still I find it more unpalatable to say nothing as opposed to causing trouble.

The problem is, saying something just gets threads closed.
It's a crappy system, but it is what it is. Not that "How do we fix this" thread number 278 is going to be any more successful than numbers 1-277, but getting them locked is a self-defense mechanism for the trolls at this point.

Screw it. They're just going to lock and ignore this one too. See you guys at EnWorld or RPG.net, or ANYWHERE that actually cares to moderate instead of just twiddle their thumbs and pretend trolls don't exist.
