| #1markustay63Jan 31, 2009 12:49:51 | I start a thread basically saying I'm considering giving 4e a second chance... and Lord Karsus has it closed... Hmmmmmmm... ![]() |
| #2sir_anarchJan 31, 2009 14:23:47 | Will he explain why do you think. I suppose I could pose the question another way: Lord_Karsus, why did you close the thread? I'm not being difficult, I just don't know why some threads are closed and some are allowed to rumble on (the 'NADs' thread springs to mind (rather too often )). |
| #3samyueruJan 31, 2009 14:41:48 | I start a thread basically saying I'm considering giving 4e a second chance... and Lord Karsus has it closed... It was the tone of your post, as opposed to the meaning of your post. |
| #4wrecanJan 31, 2009 14:44:32 | You are writing very obliquely. Are you referring to [thread=1142610]this thread[/thread]? If so, I think you are stretching the word "basically" in your OP here quite a bit. You weren't conveying any sense that you seriously were going to give 4E a chance; only that you derided yourself ("What was I thinking?") for even considering such a thing. Karsus acted appropriately in having the thread moved and locked. It was flamebait. |
| #5bydchonJan 31, 2009 15:25:24 | Whether it was flame bait or not telling the OP he was going to have the thread closed is a violation of the CoC. It's like me saying hey I reported you. That would be considered baiting. |
| #6serphetJan 31, 2009 15:45:40 | one thing that was unclear, were you talking about 4e FR or 4e rules? (or both) but the likely reason was potential baiting. |
| #7wrecanJan 31, 2009 16:32:28 | Whether it was flame bait or not telling the OP he was going to have the thread closed is a violation of the CoC. It's like me saying hey I reported you. That would be considered baiting. Karsus is a Forum Lead. Since it is part of his responsibilities to identify threads to be closed, it is not baiting for him to announce it, any more than it is baiting for the ORCs to announce why they close threads prior to locking them. He didn't report any individual. He just had a thread closed. He did nothing wrong. |

| #9kerym_ammathJan 31, 2009 18:36:33 | I am all for 4e, and in this instance I believe he was simply trying to avoid an edition war. No harm no foul. |
| #10bydchonJan 31, 2009 18:49:41 | I am all for 4e, and in this instance I believe he was simply trying to avoid an edition war. No harm no foul. True. No harm no foul. |
| #11serphetJan 31, 2009 19:08:18 | True. No harm no foul. what amkes this questionable is the history of those forums and edition wars... It's almost like they've been encouraged. (as long as it's anti 4e-realms), but they don't say that, it's just kind of amusing to look at. |
| #12wrecanJan 31, 2009 20:12:17 | Sooo forum leads are not subject to the CoC? Of course they are. But it isn't baiting when a Forum Lead tells a community why they are closing a thread. It isn't baiting when the ORCs do it. They are supposed to communicate to the community why threads are being closed, because it's good for CM and CS to communicate when they take official actions. It is baiting when an individual tells someone they are reporting that individual for violating the CoC because indivudals don't do anything official. The only purpose to such a post is to get a rise out of the individual. |
| #13markustay63Jan 31, 2009 21:54:04 | I said I found it amusing... not that I cared one way or another. :P And for the record... I specifically said 4ePH, so I assumed folks would know I was talking about the rules. I have been riding the fence about them for awhile, because I think the pros and cons are about even, and the only thing thats keep me on the 'NOT' side of the fence thus far is the idea of investing in another edition, when I have about $500 worth of 3e crap sitting on my shelf (thats including 3rd party). I'm not even close to considering 4eFR yet, and lets just leave it at that. It was the tone of your post, as opposed to the meaning of your post. I suppose... It was meant tongue-in-cheek... but it was all true. I guess honesty is not encouraged, eh? ![]() I was hoping to get a few laughs out of it, and it looked like I was accomplishing exactly that - the only negative post in the entire thread was LK's, which was one of the things I found so amusing. In a way, I was testing the waters - it appears the 'Edition Wars' are over for the most part, and most people seem to be able to be able laugh-off this kind of stuff now. Anyhow, from the few resposnses I did get, it looks like everyone has settled down, which is a good thing, and although I wasn't allowed to get a large-enough cross-section of the community to make a good assessment, I was still glad over what little I did see. And although I don't think he should have closed it (it looked like there were NO problems), he was right to move it - since it wasn't FR-specific, I shouldn't have posted it in the FR forums... although thats the perfect test-bed when one is checking for continued volatility. ;) No harm, no foul... and all of that. |
| #14serphetJan 31, 2009 22:19:01 | ah, I thought hell had frozen over and you were talking about rolling up a 4e FR character :p. I didn't realize there were still people (other than grognards) that actually had legitimate beef with the edition of rules. |
| #15DiffanJan 31, 2009 23:05:07 | I have been riding the fence about them for awhile, because I think the pros and cons are about even, and the only thing thats keep me on the 'NOT' side of the fence thus far is the idea of investing in another edition, when I have about $500 worth of 3e crap sitting on my shelf (thats including 3rd party). Why would spending money on a new edition keep you from playing it? I mean, if WotC still made 3e stuff would the decision to purchace more books be easier? To me, your going to give them your money reguardless (unless your considering boycotting) of what edition and no ones going to take away your 3e library. I mean, if it was a money issue, then I'd assume it was less about what edition and more about priorities? I'm not trying to start anything and if I come off that way, it's not my intent. I'm just trying to understand your reason for staying on the fence. |
| #16JohnLynchFeb 01, 2009 1:39:18 | New 3e books builds upon old 3e books. 4e books replace 3e books. Sure you can use 4e for one game and 3e for another, but you won't be using them both at the same time. However a new 3e book can be used along with the old 3e books. I think being unwilling to invest in a new edition is perfectly reasonable, especially if you can find 3e games in your area (in mine they're slowly being replaced by 4e games, although Pathfinder seems to be helping keep 3e more alive then it otherwise would be). |
| #17DiffanFeb 01, 2009 2:08:02 | New 3e books builds upon old 3e books. 4e books replace 3e books. Sure you can use 4e for one game and 3e for another, but you won't be using them both at the same time. However a new 3e book can be used along with the old 3e books. But your still going to pay the same price no matter what. If there was doubt about product value or play-ability or interest among your gaming group, thats one thing. But solely based on the fact that you'd be spending money, only illustrates (to me) that the reason isn't about edition, but about money. I guess I just find it strange that a person (general people, not the OP exclusively) is willing to shell out $30+ on a 3e book but questions whether it's worth it for a 4e book based solely on the amount of money said person is willing to spend. I think being unwilling to invest in a new edition is perfectly reasonable, especially if you can find 3e games in your area (in mine they're slowly being replaced by 4e games, although Pathfinder seems to be helping keep 3e more alive then it otherwise would be). I can agree with you on that, but there is still another factor there besides money. Setting aside group interest for x-edition, when it comes down to cost, I don't feel theres much difference between editionY and editionZ when they're going to cost the same. As for Pathfinder, while I applaud their attempts to make the wonderful system of 3e/3.5 better (that sounds sarcastic, but i'm not trying to be), I would be under the same amout of work (or more) re-creating NPCs, classes not mentioned in Pathfinder's Campaign, and re-writing monsters. While I find the challenge fun, I think it would also be daunting unless I use the Pathfinder world of Golarion(sp?) or a homebrew. |
| #18CCSFeb 01, 2009 3:36:21 | I didn't realize there were still people (other than grognards) that actually had legitimate beef with the edition of rules. Well, surprise. There are. Some of us find 4e just as flawed as other editions. But in ways we aren't willing to accept. And 8 months or so has not magically fixed/improved it. Nor will 8 more years.... |
| #19KaldricFeb 01, 2009 6:08:49 | Disclaimer: This is not directed at any one person. It goes out to anyone who pretends to be detached on these forums. Anyone who starts a post "I find it amusing..." is trying to convey a sense of amused detachment. Unfortunately, you're a geek posting on a D&D web forum. You will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be able to convince someone that you are amusedly detached, while posting on this forum. The very fact that you are here proves otherwise. Give it up, be honest with yourself, and stop trying to fool people. It never works. |
| #20rauricFeb 01, 2009 7:27:16 | Disclaimer: This is not directed at any one person. It goes out to anyone who pretends to be detached on these forums. I find that amusing...;) |
| #21WebsterFeb 01, 2009 10:20:18 | Just a point of clarification- LK doesn't make the final decision to close a thread, the VCL does. (Currently that would be me.) LK can recommend things to be closed, but it's my determination. |
| #22samyueruFeb 01, 2009 11:04:03 | It was meant tongue-in-cheek... but it was all true. I guess honesty is not encouraged, eh? Except for a few well known trolls who still hang about here, yeah, the edition wars are over. The problem is that some people are over-sensitised at the minute. The Forum Leads and ORCs are staying constantly on top of threads that could add "fuel to the fire" so to speak so as to not have the whole situation spark off again. |
| #23cottonmatherFeb 01, 2009 19:51:35 | Can't we all just get along?![]() |
| #24-ArryFeb 02, 2009 7:20:45 | I didn't realize there were still people (other than grognards) that actually had legitimate beef with the edition of rules. I don't know if I'm a grognard or not, but I have a problem with 4e rules; they are not to my taste. I don't moan about it however, I just play the D&D I prefer. |
| #25kerym_ammathFeb 02, 2009 7:31:46 | Well, surprise. There are. Some of us find 4e just as flawed as other editions. But in ways we aren't willing to accept. And 8 months or so has not magically fixed/improved it. Nor will 8 more years.... And 3.x lasted 8 years and it was flawed in ways many of us were unwilling to accept. What is your point? Play what you want to play, nobody is forcing you to play 4e, or buy it. |
| #26rauricFeb 02, 2009 7:52:25 | And 3.x lasted 8 years and it was flawed in ways many of us were unwilling to accept. What is your point? Play what you want to play, nobody is forcing you to play 4e, or buy it. ...or continously post on the 4E section of these boards about how you do not like the new rules. |
| #27MattDrozFeb 02, 2009 10:16:41 | ...or continously post on the 4E section of these boards about how you do not like the new rules. Sorry Rauric, when did Community business become the '4E Section' of the boards? ![]() |
| #28rauricFeb 02, 2009 10:46:13 | I just find it interesting that people who dislike the new stuff spend much of their time floating about commenting about how much they dislike it instead of hanging out in a forum about a game/rules system they actually like. If you look at many of some folks posts all they do is post snarky anti whatever stuff and do not even bother posting anything positive on any other threads. There are some folks who play with the newer rules and try to offer opinions about how they can be "fixed". This to me is a much more positive thing than just popping on to rag on the new stuff. This is not the 4E section, but it is Community Business section and that is what I am talking about. In my opinion I would just love to see people the anti-whatever crowd stick with whatever they like and leave the neg-threads alone. ***Also I am not pointing out anyone in particular*** |
| #29lord_karsusFeb 02, 2009 11:07:39 | I start a thread basically saying I'm considering giving 4e a second chance... and Lord Karsus has it closed... -I don't know why it was moved. That, I didn't ask, especially to the Community Business section. But, either way...I asked for it to be closed for the same reason that I ask for other threads to be closed. -Like everyone else, when you have a question/problem with something that I did, ask me about it, as in send me a PM so I can explain to you what I did and why I did it. I'm not a monkey that jumps to everyone's beck and call when they demand something. I like you, so that's why I'm actually responding here, but the point remains: Next time when you have a question about something, ask me instead of demanding an answer (not to say that you did, but others have and/or do) and/or causing a ruckus. |
| #30RUMPLESTIXFeb 02, 2009 11:12:09 | I just find it interesting that people who dislike the new stuff spend much of their time floating about commenting about how much they dislike it instead of hanging out in a forum about a game/rules system they actually like. And I would just love people not to think they can tell me what to do. Although the statement was not phrased as a command it might as well have been. Anyone have something to say to that? |
| #31RUMPLESTIXFeb 02, 2009 11:12:57 | just making a point.![]() |
| #32rauricFeb 02, 2009 11:20:25 | Not really because it might be against CoC ;) . Just kidding. People can say whatever they like (for the most part) around here. I just think it is silly, futile and a bit immature to hang or troll around the 4E threads around here and just snark. Again if those criticisma had useful opinions strapped with them then that would be a great thing. Usually they are just normal internet "blah blah blah I hate this" talk. That we can all do without. It looked like the OP of this and the other thread may have been fishing for trouble. Perhaps he really is getting into the new stuff. This can happen. I sometimes find myself loving things but only after I have disliked them for a few months or years even. |
| #33RUMPLESTIXFeb 02, 2009 11:37:14 | Not really because it might be against CoC ;) . Just kidding. Fair points. I did ask if anyone had anything to say after all. ![]() But, about this: Again if those criticisma had useful opinions strapped with them then that would be a great thing. Usually they are just normal internet "blah blah blah I hate this" talk. That we can all do without. Granted, some things clearly fall into those categories. But, what about those things that are in the gray areas or even worse yet, are in the areas that some consider gray and others do not? At that point the criticism for being snarky versus reasonable has suddenly grown into a really big area. I just think that usually things like saying whether or not people are causing trouble should be left to moderation Then again, this is community business. ![]() |
| #34rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 02, 2009 12:52:36 | I said I found it amusing... not that I cared one way or another. :P The wording, tone, and the fact that you posted at all implies otherwise, and opens the door for yet another knee-jerk "LK is unfair!" thread, even if you didn't intend to start one. I don't think it was fair of you to start such a thread....you should know better. |
| #35MattDrozFeb 02, 2009 12:56:04 | People can say whatever they like (for the most part) around here. Again if those criticisma had useful opinions strapped with them then that would be a great thing. Usually they are just normal internet "blah blah blah I hate this" talk. That we can all do without. I agree with that and I'd like to think that my posts have always had useful opinions attached as to why I don't like this or that. But in the same regard, I also don't like the pro-4E people that say the same about 3E (or other editons/rules) without a useful opinion. This messageboard is not 'just 4E'. There are edition-specific sub-boards that where it is restricted to talking about the edition in question. However, the settings boards are not restricted to just a single edition, but rather the lore, culture and geography of that setting. I admit, I lurk more than I post here at the WotC boards than I do over at Candlekeep, so my posts might come off as being an infrequent snark, but that's because while here, I try to restrain myself a great deal more than at the 'Keep (where I feel there are more like-minded people to myself). As for why I would hang out here if I don't play 4th Edition? Simply put, I love the game and the lore. I don't like the new rules, but there are still plenty of other things here that don't involve the rules that I can read and respond to. I'm a fan of Eberron, Star Wars, d20 Modern as well as the Realms. The Star Wars Saga rules are very close to the 4th Edition rules and I actually think they work very well with Star Wars, I just don't think they work well in my fantasy settings. So, I come by and check out what's new a few times a day when I'm bored. |
| #36rauricFeb 02, 2009 13:12:04 | My comments are more of a general thing than just aimed at the FR people. I think things in the FR boards have gotten better but that is because the few anti folk that would only posted negative stuff either toned down their ways or just left the site. |
| #37cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 19:05:35 | OP... In that case. I love what 4E has done. Because I really enjoy having my options made clear. With 4E there are no more worries about, should I multiclass with this or that class; one is all you need. And don't get stared on the skills. Who wants to be overwhelmed with choices? With skills, less is more. And its great they cut out the role play element from the skills. We don't need mechanics for that, becuase I love having friendly 3 hour discussions about what I should or shouldn't be able to do with my GM. 4E is win, win, all the way around. |

| #58CCSFeb 01, 2009 3:36:21 | I didn't realize there were still people (other than grognards) that actually had legitimate beef with the edition of rules. Well, surprise. There are. Some of us find 4e just as flawed as other editions. But in ways we aren't willing to accept. And 8 months or so has not magically fixed/improved it. Nor will 8 more years.... |
| #59KaldricFeb 01, 2009 6:08:49 | Disclaimer: This is not directed at any one person. |

| #61WebsterFeb 01, 2009 10:20:18 | Just a point of clarification- LK doesn't make the final decision to close a thread, the VCL does. (Currently that would be me.) LK can recommend things to be closed, but it's my determination. |
| #62samyueruFeb 01, 2009 11:04:03 | It was meant tongue-in-cheek... but it was all true. |
| #63cottonmatherFeb 01, 2009 19:51:35 | Can't we all just get along?![]() |
| #64-ArryFeb 02, 2009 7:20:45 | I didn't realize there were still people (other than grognards) that actually had legitimate beef with the edition of rules. I don't know if I'm a grognard or not, but I have a problem with 4e rules; they are not to my taste. I don't moan about it however, I just play the D&D I prefer. |
| #65kerym_ammathFeb 02, 2009 7:31:46 | Well, surprise. |

| #67MattDrozFeb 02, 2009 10:16:41 | ...or continously post on the 4E section of these boards about how you do not like the new rules. Sorry Rauric, when did Community business become the '4E Section' of the boards? ![]() |
| #68rauricFeb 02, 2009 10:46:13 | I just find it interesting that people who dislike the new stuff spend much of their time floating about commenting about how much they dislike it instead of hanging out in a forum about a game/rules system they actually like.
| #69lord_karsusFeb 02, 2009 11:07:39 | I start a thread basically saying I'm considering giving 4e a second chance... and Lord Karsus has it closed... |

And I would just love people not to think they can tell me what to do. Although the statement was not phrased as a command it might as well have been. Anyone have something to say to that? |
| #71RUMPLESTIXFeb 02, 2009 11:12:57 | just making a point.![]() |
| #72rauricFeb 02, 2009 11:20:25 | Not really because it might be against CoC ;) . |
| #73RUMPLESTIXFeb 02, 2009 11:37:14 | Not really because it might be against CoC ;) . ![]() |
| #74rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 02, 2009 12:52:36 | I said I found it amusing... not that I cared one way or another. :P The wording, tone, and the fact that you posted at all implies otherwise, and opens the door for yet another knee-jerk "LK is unfair!" thread, even if you didn't intend to start one. I don't think it was fair of you to start such a thread....you should know better. |

| #76rauricFeb 02, 2009 13:12:04 | My comments are more of a general thing than just aimed at the FR people. I think things in the FR boards have gotten better but that is because the few anti folk that would only posted negative stuff either toned down their ways or just left the site. |
| #77cottonmatherFeb 03, 2009 19:05:35 | OP... |
