| #1soliceAug 21, 2008 11:26:59 | Many of you already know me, those who do not… allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jennifer “Solice” Paige and I am happy to announce that I will be taking over as the Community Outreach Manager for Dungeons and Dragons. I am more than thrilled to be joining this community! My very first game of D&D was back in 1985 and I have been a fan ever since. I have worked with online communities since 1999 when I was involved with the interest program in Ultima Online as a Seer. I have also spent time working with Mythic Entertainment as a Roleplay Team Lead, as well as many news sites focusing on MMORPG’s, roleplay gaming, and fan fiction. I came to WotC last year to work on Gleemax and additionally, Magic the Gathering. In addition to working with D&D I will continue to work with the Volunteer Community Lead program and other brands as needed. I look forward to helping make this community the best it possibly can be in any way that I can. Please never hesitate to ask me questions, tell me your concerns, or simply say “hello”. A few notes: Mike Gills will be taking over my former position with Magic: the Gathering and MtGO as well as other brands as needed. Mike “Gamer Zer0” Lescault has moved on to pursue opportunities outside Wizards of the Coast. |
| #2the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 11:42:48 | What? Did Gamer Zero left the position and corp indeed? Seems like the vandetta aimed at him won... This is a bad omen. |
| #3aramis_the_redAug 21, 2008 11:51:39 | GamerZero will be missed. But we are still glad to have you aboard. Welcome, and may your run be successful. |
| #4inlicereAug 21, 2008 12:20:29 | Congrats on your new role! |
| #5WotC_CortAug 21, 2008 12:20:49 | I, for one, welcome my our new Dark Mistress Solice! The fact that I'm within easy balistic range of her nerf arsenal has absolutely impact on this message. |
| #6vaalingrade_ashland_02Aug 21, 2008 12:46:03 | Hail, Solice. Show no mercy. |
| #7crazy_monkeyAug 21, 2008 12:52:36 | And she plays a mean game of Three Dragon Ante. Actually, I soundly kicked her keister, but I believe in making the management happy with plentiful praise. :D |
| #8eleranAug 21, 2008 13:29:46 | Welcome Solice. Will you be posting videos in the future or has that gone solely to Sara G? |
| #9DargurdAug 21, 2008 13:53:37 | Well I would say welcome to the Mad House Solice but as your already here its tooooo late... mwhuhahahah |
| #10the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 14:04:17 | Hail, Solice. Show no mercy. Indeed - be ready for anything possible. It's da intrawebz. |
| #11hellmuteAug 21, 2008 14:20:29 | Mike “Gamer Zer0” Lescault has moved on to pursue opportunities outside Wizards of the Coast. Too many variables to determine the actual reasons. One being his love for his videos which WotC discontinued support for for a time IIRC. It is a shame since we had just got him trained up a bit and was doing the Weekly Reports to the community and was getting the gist of communication to and from the forum. I wonder if yourself would be taking over that position, or has the community lost that little tidbit with the loss of Mike and the communication between the company and its consumers would be lost. Sorry. Don't really see a need to welcome you here, as it is more a welcome back after you filled in for Mike during his vacation, and....well you knew the job was dangerous when you took it, but glad someone with such polite and civil communication skill has been put as overseer here. Here is hoping your demeanor filters down throughout the rest of the forums. <- this one is me. |
| #12soliceAug 21, 2008 14:23:57 | I wonder if yourself would be taking over that position, or has the community lost that little tidbit with the loss of Mike and the communication between the company and its consumers would be lost. It is my goal to not only continue the communication but increase it when possible. I ask for a bit of patience as it will take some time to get 'caught up' as it were. I am always open to feedback, suggestions and requests, so don't be shy! I will be spending the next week or so doing a LOT of reading! |
| #13the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 14:49:41 | A lot of unfair crud and fire was aimed at that guy. It's like the communauty was never wrong. |
| #14hellmuteAug 21, 2008 15:06:48 | It is my goal to not only continue the communication but increase it when possible. I ask for a bit of patience as it will take some time to get 'caught up' as it were. At this time I can only advise to keep the lines of communication as open as possible without letting a bottleneck happen in either direction. No matter the fault be your own time, or WotC hiding information. Many feel it would be better to say "I have some information, but for legal reasons cannot share it with you", than not say anything. Only time will tell how well yourself and the mess that is D&D as a whole will mesh. And as I told Mike with regards to the forums AND any reports that may include something I have written, feel free to correct my typos. I am not very offended by that as I know I suck at spelling. So I think my choice on allowing you and others to correct my typos without telling me you did should overwrite the CoC version. Odds are I won't even know you did it as I read it so fasrt I hardly can tell when I even made a typo. ;) A lot of unfair crud and fire was aimed at that guy. It's like the communauty was never wrong. The customer never is. Either you give them what they want' or they spend their money elsewhere. It wasn't just a marketing idea to say the customer is always right, but the fact that companies realized it. |
| #15hellmuteAug 21, 2008 15:10:35 | Will you be posting videos in the future or has that gone~ I hope it is gone. I don't like videos and am left out of much information without having things like transcripts for such as I prefer reading to TV. I always have to have my closed captioning on for TV anyway.... |
| #16BelorinAug 21, 2008 15:44:44 | Welcome Solice! Hope to be hearing and seeing good things for you during your reign! Bel |
| #17the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 15:58:57 | The customer never is. Either you give them what they want' or they spend their money elsewhere. It wasn't just a marketing idea to say the customer is always right, but the fact that companies realized it. The customers are not always right. And I was speaking of the base here, the 'intrawebs' side. There *was* a vandetta to get him out. Simple as that. |
| #18vaalingrade_ashland_02Aug 21, 2008 17:31:13 | A lot of unfair crud and fire was aimed at that guy. It's like the communauty was never wrong. He was the only visible part of a system that was constantly screwing the community up. It's not a question of how much was his fault, he gets all of it, because he's the only one we knew about . |
| #19the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 17:41:34 | He was the only visible part of a system that was constantly screwing the community up. It's not a question of how much was his fault, he gets all of it, because he's the only one we knew about . yeah - still don't make it all so fair, because it was 'Personal. Business'. |
| #20Omen_of_PeaceAug 21, 2008 18:00:06 | Let's not derail the thread which is about Solice. Welcome, Dark Overlady ! ![]() |
| #21lord_karsusAug 21, 2008 18:07:42 | -'Mike' was a lot easier to type than 'Solice'. But, Mike liked St. Louis, so I can't stand for that. Well, Solice now... |
| #22clinkzdpsAug 21, 2008 18:08:42 | The customers are not always right. And I was speaking of the base here, the 'intrawebs' side. There was no vendetta, this was just bound to happen eventually. |
| #23jaxgaretAug 21, 2008 18:12:47 | Well, this is an unexpected and welcome surprise. I wish you all the best in your new post, Solice. Likewise, if you ever feel the need to voice your opinion on the boards, please do so. The mods have been all too silent as of late. |
| #24the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 18:29:37 | There was no vendetta, this was just bound to happen eventually. Except while there was no secret conspiracy, there *was* a movement to have him gone. That's the truth. |
| #25Shemeska_the_MarauderAug 21, 2008 18:39:30 | I will not miss Mike Lescault in the slightest. It was long overdue for him to move on. The man poisoned the atmosphere around here over the past year. But... that said, you've always been pleasant in your interactions with the community Solice, so welcome aboard in your new and improved capacity. Expect a much more welcoming reception from the folks around here than your predecessor received and cultivated. And as I understand it, Mike Gills has a good track record of experience coming into his new position, so it sounds like someone took a good long look at the community situation and made some positive changes. ![]() |
| #26thecasualoblivionAug 21, 2008 18:51:36 | My condolences on your appointment to the D&D Community Manager post. Welcome to Thunderdome! |
| #27vaalingrade_ashland_02Aug 21, 2008 19:10:40 | Now if we can get some changes in CS, we could fix this place. |
| #28thecasualoblivionAug 21, 2008 19:21:20 | Now if we can get some changes in CS, we could fix this place. Hopefully Solice doesn't become another patsy set up to take responsibility for the failings of CS and the CoC. |
| #29the_ubbergeekAug 21, 2008 19:29:08 | I will not miss Mike Lescault in the slightest. It was long overdue for him to move on. The man poisoned the atmosphere around here over the past year. An example of what I meaned. |
| #30emelarAug 21, 2008 20:15:53 | Hello, Solice. ![]() |
| #31clinkzdpsAug 21, 2008 20:49:16 | Solice has a nicer avatar. EDIT: Ubbergeek, don't you think you're overreacting just a bit? GZ was really hard on moderation for no good reason. I think Solice will be much more fair. |
| #32wrecanAug 21, 2008 22:00:37 | Welcome, Solice! |
| #33rhialtoAug 22, 2008 0:56:50 | Are there any specific plans you can tell us to directly address some of the damage that happened under his tenure? |
| #34calronmoonflowerAug 22, 2008 1:19:53 | Welcome, Solice. |
| #35MultizarAug 22, 2008 2:22:35 | :DWelcome Solice:D I, and many others, would like to see the Other Worlds split back into seperate forums. What are your thoughts on this? Many people left and/or stopped posting here at Wizards because of the forums merging. I would like to see Mystara, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Spelljammer, Birthright, Ravenloft, and Planescape split back into seperate forums. Please get back to me on this topic. ![]() |
| #36vaalingrade_ashland_02Aug 22, 2008 7:48:16 | Solice has a nicer avatar. Just FYI, G0 and CM have nothing to do with moderation. That's CS, which has been if anything, far too soft and needs to fix the CoC to remove the new name loophole. |
| #37SoulCatcher78Aug 22, 2008 7:51:05 | Welcome Solice, bringer of light (and camera)! |
| #38malkav666Aug 22, 2008 7:54:11 | Welcome Administratrix Solice, Good luck with the community here ;) I have three peices of advice to offer you: 1.) Post often even if you have nothing important to say, the community loves that. 2.) Get some thick skin (or a thick rubber suit). There be lots of angst on these forums. Not sure why...but none the less it is true. Just try not to take any insults to heart. 3.)Crush anyone who opposes you with impunity. Sometimes you have to sacrifice a few nerds for the greater good. Have a nice day, and take it easy on your co workers witht he nerf items, someone may loose an eye or something. love, malkav |
| #39wrecanAug 22, 2008 7:57:36 | I think she should just shoot a nerd for no reason to make the rest of us fear and a respect her. Just not me. Or in the face. |
| #40thecasualoblivionAug 22, 2008 8:40:55 | One piece of advice: try to appear to have your own opinion. G0 had a tendancy to sound like he was just echoing the company line all the time and got a bad rap for it. Scott Rouse does a good job at being a company man while having his own opinions. |
| #41arclight2012Aug 22, 2008 8:47:02 | Welcome Solice!!!! |
| #42eleranAug 22, 2008 9:03:51 | I think she should just shoot a nerd for no reason to make the rest of us fear and a respect her. Are nominations against the CoC? LMAO |
| #43zombie_babiesAug 22, 2008 9:33:02 | I think she should just shoot a nerd for no reason to make the rest of us fear and a respect her. It's gotta be in the face, though. Nothin' more serious than forcin' a closed casket. And a good sign of contempt. Trust me, a face shot will go a long way towards proving she'll brook no insolence. ;) |
| #44VloorshadAug 22, 2008 10:18:27 | Welcome to your new position, Solice. I must say that, as far as I can tell thus far, you seem to be avoiding the pitfalls that your predecessor dug for himself. Point blank, you seem to be doing a great job, even through the rough times of the recent past, so keep up the good work. ubbergeek: It wasn't a vendetta, it was a predictable result of bad customer service and an inevitability based on said poor customer service. |
| #45TabularasaAug 22, 2008 10:22:05 | Hello Sollice, Would you care to comment on the recently announced reorganisation: What does it means for the upcoming product schedule and the GSL? Which part of WoTC are losing resources and which part are gaining some? Best regards |
| #46demonlord57Aug 22, 2008 12:02:25 | Hello Solice ![]() |
| #47elondirAug 22, 2008 12:26:44 | Greetings Solice! |
| #48ZherogAug 22, 2008 13:12:41 | I will not miss Mike Lescault in the slightest. It was long overdue for him to move on. The man poisoned the atmosphere around here over the past year. Things were at the point where Mike was bad for the community (as a whole). Part of that was his fault; part of that was our fault. We could certainly debate back and forth what percentage each should receive, but doing so would be a pointless exercise at this point. It would also be a topic for a different thread. * Allow me to take this moment to welcome Solice to the D&D area. I've worked with her a bit on a few things around various places, and I'm quite happy to have the chance to work with her even more. I talked with her quite a bit at GenCon (before I knew about these changes), and I have to say that I'm very much on board with her ideas and Community Management philosophy. I have no doubt she'll do an excellent job representing us within WotC. |
| #49trappedsliderAug 22, 2008 16:23:53 | I think she should just shoot a nerd for no reason to make the rest of us fear and a respect her. you suggest it,you get to be frist.....and me last Solice may i also suggest getting down into the D20 modern forum and saying hello there too since alot of damage was done there..... |
| #50hellmuteAug 22, 2008 17:58:35 | Solice you have a new PM, and if you do not hear back from me on this system after you read that PM or within the next week, the problem I mentioned had a turn for the worse, and I fear for the sake of the forums, and your sanity, but hoping either way and wishing you luck in this madhouse.![]() The customers are not always right. And I was speaking of the base here, the 'intrawebs' side. Yes they are. The customer knows what they want, and how much they are willing to pay for something, etc. No matter in real life or on the internet. Mike had many faults, one of which was being allowed to be used as the scapegoat for the forums. See me signature, and the thread in whatever the new forum location is about C&C for CM to note many of the problems people had with Mike. It was not a one way street, but he was starting to do some good around here prior to recent events.... |
| #51clinkzdpsAug 22, 2008 18:32:54 | I think she should just shoot a nerd for no reason to make the rest of us fear and a respect her. A pretty boy eh? In the chest then? |
| #52Mr_MiscellanyAug 22, 2008 19:55:06 | Well Met and Welcome, Solice. Now about the FR Forums.... ;) |
| #53the_ubbergeekAug 22, 2008 20:09:10 | Yes they are. The customer knows what they want, and how much they are willing to pay for something, etc. No matter in real life or on the internet. The customers can be agressive, reasonless, and all kind of suck. Don't make them right. They have limits to their rights. A lot of things, and so was my point, was however twisted, biaised, etc and so was not so one way street, as admitted. Maybe he was not as bad as accused to. |
| #54hellmuteAug 22, 2008 20:25:30 | The customers can be agressive, reasonless, and all kind of suck. Don't make them right. They have limits to their rights. But the customer....start a new thread about this and repost your last message to keep Solice's thread clean please. |
| #55ZherogAug 22, 2008 20:38:11 | A lot of things, and so was my point, was however twisted, biaised, etc and so was not so one way street, as admitted. Maybe he was not as bad as accused to. That was sort of my point. It was partly Mike's own fault, and partly our fault. How much goes to each "side" is open to debate, and probably varies from one observer to the next. However... the past is done, and it can't be changed. Let's move forward, with Solice, and make this the community we all think it can be again. |
| #56the_ubbergeekAug 22, 2008 21:33:51 | But the customer....start a new thread about this and repost your last message to keep Solice's thread clean please. perhaps indeed. |
| #57nobodyremembersthisAug 23, 2008 15:53:43 | Let's hope you do a better job Solice. I had no problem with GZ, but these boards have shown a near total failure in moderation, inconsistant and contradictory Codes of Conduct, and little to no visible presence from the Developers/staff. Fix the first 2, and the rest will take care of itself. |
| #58wrecanAug 23, 2008 20:41:43 | Sadly G_Zero and now Solice have nothing to do with moderation and the Code of Conduct. That's Customer Service, for which CM always gets unfairly blamed. And until the tone improves, I don't foresee any developers wanting to come into this town square. People are already boiling the tar and plucking feathers. |
| #59hellmuteAug 23, 2008 20:48:53 | Sadly G_Zero and now Solice have nothing to do with moderation and the Code of Conduct. That's Customer Service, for which CM always gets unfairly blamed. And until the tone improves, I don't foresee any developers wanting to come into this town square. People are already boiling the tar and plucking feathers. Funny, Scott Rouse seems to think otherwise.... ![]() And actually Tom O. has recently appeared out of nowhere, and so far like WotC_DM seems more polite than other developers as you could say Solice is/was compared to GZ. ![]() |
| #60wrecanAug 23, 2008 21:03:15 | Last I checked, Scott Rouse is not a developer. I'd love to see more developers come to the forums though. |
| #61hellmuteAug 23, 2008 21:22:21 | Last I checked, Scott Rouse is not a developer. I'd love to see more developers come to the forums though. Never said he was. That was towards the bolded portion. But in a sense he IS a developer. He does not work on the software, or the actual game design, but the whole of it all and developing all of it into something that the company can sell to people that they will both enjoy and buy. |
| #62soliceAug 24, 2008 18:30:09 | Thank you for the welcomes and advice! I will be spending much of the next few weeks learning, reading, listening, and in general absorbing the D&D community. I am listening to your concerns and taking note of your warnings! As I said before, I am thrilled to be here! |
| #63vaalingrade_ashland_02Aug 24, 2008 18:46:12 | If you post a video of you actively atacking CS guys for how they've handled the moderation, I will be your loyal vassal for all time. |
| #64wrecanAug 24, 2008 18:59:36 | Word of advice: Vaal is an incompetent vassal. But he makes a kickass minion! ![]() |
| #65trappedsliderAug 24, 2008 23:22:43 | Thank you for the welcomes and advice! I will be spending much of the next few weeks learning, reading, listening, and in general absorbing the D&D community. I see how this going to go down then...*rolls away in wheelchair* |
| #66hippokreneAug 24, 2008 23:52:34 | I thought you were already community manager... That’s what happens when your frame of reference is 1) regular posters, 2) volunteer babysitters, and 3) official types. That said, awesome! Solace is our community manager! I think she should just shoot a nerd for no reason to make the rest of us fear and a respect her. Solice: You have disappointed me once again. I have been far too lenient with your incompitence. wrecan: Oh no! Solice: It is time you learned that I will brook no failure! *kills random minion walking by* What do you think of that? I bet you feel really bad I killed that guy. wrecan: Um... actually, I thought he was a jerk. Solice: Then, what about... THIS! *kills another random minion* wrecan: Nope. Not bothering me at all. Solice: I see. What about this guy? Doesn’t he owe you money? wrecan: Twenty bucks. We had a bet that – Solice: *force chokes guy who owes money to wrecan* wrecan: Noooooooo! |
| #67trappedsliderAug 25, 2008 12:48:48 | Solace: You have disappointed me once again. I have been far too lenient with your incompitence. ![]() |
| #68PhobosAug 25, 2008 12:57:17 | Welcome Solice... might them there are dragonmarks all down your right arm, and a spot of your left? ;) |
| #69LivingShadowAug 25, 2008 16:04:17 | Welcome Solice, good to have you. I hope this change may actually jumpstart the DnD forums. As a word of advice, try to avoid seeming like you are avoiding questions at least give a reason to not answer them. Also avoid legalese/managerese in all its forms because it greatly annoys people. |
| #70batshidoAug 25, 2008 16:06:17 | Welcome Solice. May your banhammer swing quickly and strike true. |
| #71RogerWilcoAug 25, 2008 17:33:20 | Welcome. I used to frequent the old Forums before the whole Digital Initiative and 4th Ed. started. I was totally put of by the way WotC stopped supporting 3.5 the moment those were announced, including the 3.5 products they were still publishing in the year after that. More specifically e-Tools, but many other things got killed in those days with poor communication on what was to come and replace them. I already then decided that if WotC can so suddenly pull the plug on their existing products, I wasn't going to stick around for their next incarnation. Then came Gleemax, with both a poor name and execution, that now has been killed too. (I could care less, but it proves to me that I can't trust WotC to keep supporing things). I trust WotC no more. Getting back this trust will be a very long process. It starts with good and honest communication. What I want to say with myself as example, is that many people who frequent this place, or used to in the past, have an axe to grind, or a hammer in search of a nail, so being the one with the ungrateful task of community manager will be hard. I know that such a task usually has very actual leverage in the company, so you often get the flak for things outside of your control. I still wish you the best of luck, but I hope you have a thick hide. |
| #72hellmuteAug 25, 2008 17:42:10 | I know that such a task usually has very LITTLE* actual leverage in the company, so you often get the flak for things outside of your control. *Did you mean this or am I confused about what you wrote? |
| #73RogerWilcoAug 26, 2008 10:01:47 | *Did you mean this or am I confused about what you wrote? Hehehe, my English skills failed at 3:00 AM. Yeah I think that's what it should read. |
| #74boj0Aug 26, 2008 10:16:01 | You may proceed, but take caution, for there are horrors beyond mortal comprehension within these walls; the lands are infested with trolls and the villagers are angry. Should you return to us with the light of reason, ye shall be hailed as a hero across the boards, but failiure, wether of your own fault or not shall result in a return to a realm of darkness that once entered, can never be left. |
| #75batshidoAug 26, 2008 11:18:25 | Should you return to us with the light of reason, ye shall be hailed as a hero across the boards, but failiure, wether of your own fault or not shall result in a return to a realm of darkness that once entered, can never be left. Now, let's be honest with the new Over-Mod. Solice, whether or not you do a good job around here, you're going to find smoldering effigies of yourself occasionally. The only thing you can really do about it is make sure the people who are lighting them in the first place are the ones who are part of the problem, rather than the people who actually belong here. |
| #76ORC_UzumakiAug 26, 2008 19:14:09 | Remember to keep posts here on-topic and friendly. Please consider the code of conduct when posting to these forums. http://forums.gleemax.com/community_coc.php |
| #77epochgamesAug 28, 2008 17:41:28 | Thank you for the welcomes and advice! I will be spending much of the next few weeks learning, reading, listening, and in general absorbing the D&D community. Let it be known it's not simply enough to obligatorily tell us you are listening from time to time. Just like in a real conversation, active listening requires input, feedback, and all that good stuff. GZ was finally starting to get there, although still had a ways to go. I haven't been privy to dealings with you in the past, so I'll try to keep an open mind; I just don't want to see months go by without any real 2way communication. I wish you lots of luck and hope you can succeed where none have before. Look! a nickel! *beats a speedy retreat* |
| #78ProlificVoidSep 02, 2008 22:30:35 | Welcome, Solice! While I must not've been an active enough member to have really noticed all the previous hullabaloo (which I don't regret missing, btw), I'm hoping to become more involved, so I look forward to seeing where things go! ;) |
| #79hellmuteSep 03, 2008 15:29:20 | Seems Solice is worse than Mike was for appearing on the forums, and is less a community manager than a VCL manager, as it appears to be the only people she talks to.... |
| #80ZherogSep 03, 2008 15:34:27 | I'm not a VCL, and she's responded to every PM I've sent her. *shrug* |
| #81wrecanSep 03, 2008 15:45:32 | Me too. Plus, she has posted in the threads here. She just has other responsibilities too. |
| #82hellmuteSep 03, 2008 15:58:01 | I'm not a VCL, and she's responded to every PM I've sent her. *shrug* I thought you were. The point being, there should be things done IN the forums, not everything trying to be hidden behind WotC doors. That is what we tried teaching GZ before his departure. You want the community to work, then you have to do things AS a community, not a few non-WotC employees working with a few WotC employees making decisions for everyone else. This should be Solice's very forum in D&D. The place where she can collect information from people about the forums, and a palce where she can discuss things about it, not in PMS. This is the Community Business forum. Other insight she has to give can of course be placed into the proper forum, like the DDI stuff and such....but the best way to communicate with the community, is to communicate WITH the community. ![]() wrecan: At least you didn't give the cons as an excuse, because that would fall into WotC's failed planning of changing things and then just having the new people run off to other things, leaving nothing working prior to have a bigger mess to clean up. |
| #83emwasickSep 03, 2008 16:09:04 | She just has other responsibilities too. You mean it's not her job to be on the forums all day everyday? That's so normal! |
| #84wrecanSep 03, 2008 16:24:09 | That is what we tried teaching GZ before his departure. Is this a royal "we", hellmute? You want the community to work, then you have to do things AS a community, not a few non-WotC employees working with a few WotC employees making decisions for everyone else. You're treading into conspiracy territory. That Solice answers PMs does nto mean that she's plotting things behind the community's back. wrecan: At least you didn't give the cons as an excuse, because that would fall into WotC's failed planning of changing things and then just having the new people run off to other things, leaving nothing working prior to have a bigger mess to clean up. I'm sorry, but even after diagramming this sentence and I can't figure out what you're trying to say. Was it responsive to my statement that you quoted, or were you just using my statement as a thinly veiled excuse to vent? I don't understand what you just wrote. |
| #85hellmuteSep 03, 2008 16:44:51 | Is this a royal "we", hellmute? Yes. Now shut up and bow down to me, before I have you flayed and drawn and quartered! ![]() No, the forums itself told GZ, that he needs to communicate more, and was doing so with his weekly reports near the end where it was not a one way street of communication. ![]() Excuse: GenCon and PAZ were the reasons Solice has not been posting. If you as a company know you have someone new going into a position that requires a lot of work, they should not be sent to conventions right after taking the position and leave the work for that new position to be done when you return in a month. That would be like sending a new employee on a month paid vacation before they even enter the place of employment. Ergo, you didn't use the cons as an excuse. And if you don't like my posts you can ignore them. I had enough of Keith "Eberron" Baker making fun of people with disabilities the other day, I will not tolerate it from anymore people! |
| #86wrecanSep 03, 2008 16:49:55 | the forums itself told GZ The forums are sentient?! Are they going to take over Skynet, launch all the nukes and send its Terminators to crush the remnants of the human race? Some people wanted answers to their questions. Gamer_Zer0 often said he couldn't answer all the requests he got for time reasons and because he just didn't know the answers, and he wasn't sure if he would know the answers, so posting "I don't know" may have been premature. Some people, hellmute, included didn't think that was a good answer. The idea that there was some "we" or even consensus on this point, such that one could say the "forums" told GZ anything is inaccurate (to put it charitably). |
| #87lord_karsusSep 03, 2008 16:54:49 | The forums are sentient?! Are they going to take over Skynet, launch all the nukes and send its Terminators to crush the remnants of the human race? -...Damn... -Anyway, Solice, so far, with my back-and-forths with her, Solice is a lot more accessible than Mike was. That's a step up, in my opinion. |
| #88wrecanSep 03, 2008 16:55:32 | Excuse: GenCon and PAZ were the reasons Solice has not been posting. If you as a company know you have someone new going into a position that requires a lot of work, they should not be sent to conventions right after taking the position and leave the work for that new position to be done when you return in a month. It's a reason, not an excuse. Solice has several responsibilities, and answering the concerns of forumgoers who simply don't have the patience to wait a few weeks is not one of them. In the future, don't use shorthands like "cons", which has several different meanings in English. Clarity can only be your friend. And if you don't like my posts you can kiss my ass and ignore them. My like or dislike of your posts is irrelevant. But if I don't understand your posts -- and I often don't understand your posts -- I'm going to ask for you to clarify. If you don't like being asked for clarification, perhaps you should learn to write more clearly the first time, or develop thicker skin. <--that's a metaphor, by the way. I'm not literally asking you to develop some sort of dermatological ailment. I had enough of Keith "Eberron" Baker making fun of people with disabilities the other day, I will not tolerate it from anymore people! If you believe I have insulted you personally, you should report my post rather than make baseless accusations. I know we've discussed such things before because the last time I asked you to report a post in which you thought I was being insulting, you then accused me of baiting you. To reiterate: You don't have to respond to this. I'd rather you didn't. If you think I've violated the Code of Conduct, you should report the post so a WizO can take a look and determine whether your impression is correct. I have a feeling the WizO will determine your impression is incorrect. |
| #89hellmuteSep 03, 2008 17:02:19 | Some people wanted answers to their questions. The people that had no questions to ask don't matter. If they do not view their opinion that they think there is a problem, it does not automatically mean they don't have a problem with something, or don't have questions. Please don't turn into GZ by thinking that way. It would only make you look the fool. So the idea that the forums, not just some, wanted more interaction between CM and the forums users was the "we". Those who didn't didn't matter as they would have cared less if it happened or not, or maybe were jsut watching. What is so wrong with thinking the personal responsible for the community should not be interacting WITH the community? How the hell would you really know aht is going on unless you actually look for yourself? ![]() |
| #90wrecanSep 03, 2008 17:09:37 | The people that had no questions to ask don't matter. I didn't mention people without questions, so your response is a non sequitur. Please don't turn into GZ by thinking that way. I'm not sure what way you think I'm thinking, since your preceding statements are not an accurate description of anything I've written. What is so wrong with thinking the personal responsible for the community should not be interacting WITH the community? It's not a binary proposition, hellmute. The choice isn't between interacting and not interacting. The question is how much interaction can the CM accomplish along with all of their other job responsibilities. You want more. Which is fine. But you demand more and refuse to acknowledge any reasons why more might not be feasible, and that is not fine. How the hell would you really know aht is going on unless you actually look for yourself? I do not understand this question, even after I correct the spelling. I think you may have an unspoken assumption about me in there, but I can't figure out what it would be. |
| #91ZherogSep 03, 2008 17:18:21 | Hellmute, I really think you're barking up the wrong tree on this one. Solice was scheduled to attend GenCon and PAX before WotC went through their internal reorganization. Canceling her attendance at those events would've cost WotC money (airfare if there was any, hotel reservations, badge registration). Furthermore, she didn't start a new job; she took on slightly different responsibilities with her existing job. You're absolutely, 100% correct that it is ideal for a community manager to interact with the community. This is one of the reasons so many people liked the WizOs and Melanie when they ran things -- because they were in the communities, posting, participating, answering questions, responding to problems, and so on. And, in my opinion, Solice has done a good job at that in the past. I know several people who are active members on the Magic: the Gathering and Magic Online sections, where Solice had responsibilities prior to the shift. Every single one of them speaks very highly of her. I'm not talking about one or two people, either. I'm talking about at least a dozen, possibly as many as 20. (I'm too lazy to count them up in my head) Those communities are tough places, and they wouldn't suffer a fool in the position of Community Manager. She has a lot to catch up on, and a lot of reading to do. Quite frankly, Mike left her a huge mess to sort out. In my opinion, she's doing things right by taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. She's reading threads, looking around, and talking to VCLs about what the issues are. The re-organization is a great example; she's allowed the community to talk about it, she's read along and taken the input, and has promised to post her proposal by Friday. If she doesn't, you have a valid complaint. I know you don't know me from any other random person. But I've met her, and we talked for a long time about the community - what it was like before Gleemax, what mistakes were made, why I almost left recently, and a lot of other things. I'll tell you this: I trust her. I think building the community is her top priority, and representing the community is a close second. Maybe she completely suckered me, and she's an evil witch who doesn't give a damn; but I don't think so. So yeah. There's a lot of things to kvetch and moan about around here. At the moment, Solice isn't one of them. In my opinion, of course. |
| #92hellmuteSep 03, 2008 17:23:15 | It's a reason, not an excuse. Solice has several responsibilities, and answering the concerns of forumgoers who simply don't have the patience to wait a few weeks is not one of them. Weeks? WEEKS?! WEEKS! Do you realize how long ago DDI was announced? Do you realize how little people actually know about it, including the people that are supposed to be making it? People were asking for information for more than weeks, and got ****** off waiting and waiting to seem to only be ignored. In my very first bit of advice for Solice, I gave the most simple. Actively communicate WITH the forums. With Solice's demeanor rather than GZ's the fact that IF she was communicating WITH the forums would mean a lot less anger towards things SUCH AS DDI, as well as other things. Look how long it took WotC to figure out about the vminis scam idea they had and how the people that were actual potential users of it were the very people who were outspoken on the forums rather than some hidden group NOT on the forums. Because those on the forums and active online woudl be the ones most prone to using DDI. They finally got that point, with little to no help from GZ. So again it comes down to the lines of communication being open BOTH ways. Which in part is Solice's job, unless she has some unknown or undisclosed job contrary to what GZ had last stated his changed name position was. Then you have to wonder why nobody knows exactly, and what exactly DOES Solice do? Knowing this will again create a LOT less confusion. This is one of WotC's major flaws in that it refuses to give any information, but expects people to inherently know exactly what they are talking about with a total lack of communication save for the cons and such. There NEEDS to be someone form the WotC staff on EVERY area of the forums for each of the product lines that CAN and WILL communicate between WotC and the respective forums. That is how you build a community, and failing to understand that is one of the reasons Gleemax itself was a failure, because WotC does not understand what a community is. Not to mention having open lines of communication is good form a business standpoint as it lets people know their concerns about a product are being heard and something to remove problems present or future are being dealt with in order to provide a better product for the consumers. You're absolutely, 100% correct that it is ideal for a community manager to interact with the community. This is one of the reasons so many people liked the WizOs and Melanie when they ran things -- because they were in the communities, posting, participating, answering questions, responding to problems, and so on. Sorry I was not around at that time. You have to admit that Solice pretty much has it rough to begin with because of WotC choices then because the mess GZ left the forums in, and then not being able to get down to fixing them ASAP to restore that time of good will and good faith that you speak of. |
| #93ZherogSep 03, 2008 17:26:33 | What the heck makes you think wrecan is a WotC employee? ![]() Solice definitely had it rough given what she was left from Mike. And to be completely honest, quite a bit of that is perceived rather than actual -- but that doesn't make it any easier, and might make it harder. But you're still barking up the wrong tree this time. Solice is interacting, she's learning about the section, she's dealing with stuff, and she's planning on how best to help us (as evidenced by her willingness to fix the dumb ass layout we got stuck with). |
| #94trappedsliderSep 03, 2008 17:32:15 | What the heck makes you think wrecan is a WotC employee? and she's acturally promised to get info for my section :D |
| #95ZherogSep 03, 2008 17:33:41 | And she's cute as heck! ![]() OK, that actually has nothing to do with her job performance. But I figured it didn't hurt... ;) |
| #96wrecanSep 03, 2008 17:34:31 | The non-quoted portion of your post DOES violate the CoC Then you should report it. no length of reporting will do any good as you are a WotC employee and are thus allowed to violate the CoC at your whim without recourse. I am not an employee of Wizards and the CoC does apply to me as much as it applies to you. Then you have to wonder why nobody knows exactly, and what exactly DOES Solice do? The only person this seems to bother is you. The rest of us know that one of her duties is to communicate to Wizards about what is happening in the community and to help organize the community volunteers, like the VCLs, Scribes, FLs, FGs, etc. I don't think we need to know the specifics of all of her varied duties, as long as we keep in mind that talking to us is not the only duty she has. |
| #97hellmuteSep 03, 2008 17:43:45 | What the heck makes you think wrecan is a WotC employee? Webster is so probably all the VCLs are. Solice definitely had it rough given what she was left from Mike. And to be completely honest, quite a bit of that is perceived rather than actual -- but that doesn't make it any easier, and might make it harder. I would just like to see more IN the D&D forums about the decisions ABOUT the D&D forums rather than hidden in some VCL only forum, or PMs between some little clic of mod helper type users. |
| #98hellmuteSep 03, 2008 17:45:10 | Then you should report it. I would but as you can already tell my stalker has appeared to remove important content yet again which only proves my point. |
| #99seTinySep 03, 2008 17:46:01 | Webster is so probably all the VCLs are. I believe (with Bussy no longer a VCL) Webster is the only VCL that is also a WizO, also Wrecan is not a VCL. |
| #122WebsterSep 03, 2008 20:46:19 | Meh, I'm not going to let a thread welcoming Solice turn into a flame war. Helmute- (Since I'm sure you'll just repost anything I send in PM anyway,) As you know, sadly WizOs don't interact with the community. Therefore there would be no reason for one to stalk you. I'm sorry you don't want to register to file a complaint, but that IS the method to do it. You can't go to a store an hide in the bathroom to return something because you don't like the customer service counter. Now perhaps a good message for EVERYONE, (Because it wouldn't be the first time it happened.) Making accusations against WizOs does NOT grant immunity to following the Code of Conduct. They won't be "proving your point they're out to get you" if you get yourself banned for breaking the rules, they're just inforcing the rules. And with that, I'm closing the thread. Welcome to the team Solice! ![]() |
| #123mudbunnySep 03, 2008 20:54:07 | bows head, scuffs toe of shoe in dirt I am sorry. |
| #124ORC_WyvernSep 03, 2008 20:54:26 | This thread is being closed at VCL request. |
