| #1bill_bisco_average_adventurerAug 30, 2008 10:09:58 | This thread was recently locked apparently due to complaints from some posts. I'm curious though, why couldn't the offending posts simply be removed? I was enjoying some of the intelligent responses to my original post. ![]() |
| #2spearspikeAug 30, 2008 10:12:24 | I hope it wasn't my post that got it locked. I thought it was kosher, given the topic, but if it is my fault, I don't think other posters who were enjoying the thread should be penalized for it. |
| #3WebsterAug 30, 2008 10:23:29 | Things tend to spiral out of control quickly and that thread was getting too heated too fast. |
| #4krownhunter07Aug 30, 2008 13:05:12 | It's standard for WotC to lock threads that get reported too many times in too little time, if you get my meaning. They review it when able and decide if it can be salvaged and reopened. |
| #5apollyonschosenAug 30, 2008 13:11:53 | It's standard for WotC to lock threads that get reported too many times in too little time, if you get my meaning. Its a standard Avenger tactic, get used to it. |
| #6spearspikeAug 30, 2008 13:29:00 | Its a standard Avenger tactic, get used to it. What do you mean? |
| #7krownhunter07Aug 30, 2008 13:31:18 | Its a standard Avenger tactic, get used to it. ...? Not sure where you're coming from on this one...? |
| #8trobonAug 30, 2008 13:38:46 | What do you mean? ...? Not sure where you're coming from on this one...? Pssst... He doesn't like the 4E Avengers... He's trying to say that whenever there is a topic that the "Avengers" don't like they will continue to report it until it gets locked. Of coarse that has nothing to do with the conversation or the example, but that's what I read it as. |
| #9calronmoonflowerAug 30, 2008 14:01:40 | The alternative is to moderate the thread if it has bad content. Unfortunately, as the moderation is split into two groups, this is a slow and in my opinion inept process. |
| #10hellmuteAug 30, 2008 14:25:34 | ...? Not sure where you're coming from on this one...? I think the idea is that a group may decide to launch reports close to each other that causes the thread to appear to be a big problem, when maybe this group and their timing could cause a thread to be locked for the number of reports generated within a certain time frame, while if the reports had come across a longer span of time it would allow the thread to be moderated in a more proper fashion. While the quick report/lock activity may have a thread locked and forgotten. ![]() |
| #11krownhunter07Aug 30, 2008 14:30:08 | Now is that just a stab at people or has that really happened? |
| #12spearspikeAug 30, 2008 14:34:23 | I think the idea is that a group may decide to launch reports close to each other that causes the thread to appear to be a big problem, when maybe this group and their timing could cause a thread to be locked for the number of reports generated within a certain time frame, while if the reports had come across a longer span of time it would allow the thread to be moderated in a more proper fashion. While the quick report/lock activity may have a thread locked and forgotten. I think this does seem to be happening in some instances. |
| #13hellmuteAug 30, 2008 14:39:59 | Now is that just a stab at people or has that really happened? Without contact with the actual records of the reporting system it is uncertain, but some of the reasons for locking threads seem to make it a possibility. |
| #144vengerAug 31, 2008 1:09:07 | Conspiracy theorists are a funny bunch...JFK and the 2nd gunman, alien abductions sanctioned by the US government, 4E Avengers intentionally getting threads locked...the list goes on. |
| #15apollyonschosenAug 31, 2008 11:19:42 | I don't personally have anything against the Underoo Avengers. But i have seen threads closed down rather quickly by reports from said Avengers. Doesn't mean its wrong or bad even...hell it's Wotc's forum so if they moderate it that way.... |
| #16krownhunter07Aug 31, 2008 11:35:39 | I don't personally have anything against the Underoo Avengers. But i have seen threads closed down rather quickly by reports from said Avengers. Doesn't mean its wrong or bad even...hell it's Wotc's forum so if they moderate it that way.... If threads are getting reported a lot and something in those threads warrant it, I can understand why they get closed. If reports are pouring in, yet there is no moderation being done, I doubt the thread would be closed. Now, I have seen pro threads get spammed in and trolled to the point of being closed before... but that isn't from 'Underoo Avengers'. The people doing so normally (sadly, not always) get banned for the day. |
| #17emwasickAug 31, 2008 12:33:23 | But i have seen threads closed down rather quickly by reports from said Avengers. Which WizO are you again? Or is this info you got from the conspiracy newsletter? Show Don't write anything from the *conspiracy* newsletter in a public forum. |
| #18WebsterAug 31, 2008 20:50:47 | Yes, since both sides can make the same exact accusation, I suggest such conspiracy theories be put to rest. There is no "conspiracy", and if there was, I'm sure T1 can handle it. Notice how there are some complaints that "nothing is being done?" That could be because something didn't actually violate the CoC, or someone trying to get a thread closed is a bit Both sides get moderated. Both sides accuse the other of not getting moderated. I suggest all accusations stop. And I suggest the outright trolling stop. You don't like 4e and never plan on playing? There's no need to post on someone's thread where they're saying they like 4e. Someone saying they don't like 4e? There's no need to try to convert them. They're not going to change their mind, and you don't ever have to worry about playing in a 4e game with them. And yes, I am a WizO. (As already declared a long time ago.) As for this thread- It seemed to be a joke post that went over heads. It turned south rather quickly, and in part prompted me to ask for a ban on politics again. |
| #19hellmuteAug 31, 2008 21:14:46 | If you are a WizO, then why are you not using that account rather than double dipping and pretending to be a regular user in disguise as a VCL...volunteer? That seems like concrete proof the system does NOT work. |
| #20krownhunter07Aug 31, 2008 21:19:54 | If you are a WizO, then why are you not using that account rather than double dipping and pretending to be a regular user in disguise as a VCL...volunteer? Not really. One is their WizO face and one their fan face. It's like walking around in Uniform after your work day is over... not something you do for fun. |
| #21hellmuteAug 31, 2008 21:37:08 | Not really. One is their WizO face and one their fan face. It's like walking around in Uniform after your work day is over... not something you do for fun. Or you have CM ran by CS because the "volunteers" are all fictional and are really just alternate accounts for WizO's which means the cake is a lie. So those "volunteers" that are supposed to be from the community are actually WotC employees which means that there is little actual coming FROM the community, but still everything be handed down by WotC directive. The community itself then has no say in anything. |
| #22WebsterAug 31, 2008 21:51:56 | WizOs can be members of the community. In fact, all of them started as members of the community. I only log on to my WizO account while I'm on shift. I don't do VCL duties while on duty as T1 CS, and I don't use the account to do things for the VCL side because it's not fair to the other VCL that I have that access. Were I to do that, I bet you'd be accusing me of abusing my powers. CM and CS are two separate departments, no matter what belief you want to cling to. So those "volunteers" that are supposed to be from the community are actually WotC employees which means that there is little actual coming FROM the community, but still everything be handed down by WotC directive. Didn't you just flame me saying I'm NOT an employee and didn't know what WotC wants? The community DOES have a say in things. Rather than arguing and fighting against me, how about working with me for a change? I'm always passing on suggestions and ideas. I think you're still confused about the diffferences between CM and CS. You want CS policies to change, but CM has no control over CS. The same goes for the other way. CS doesn't dictate what I do for CM. Believe it or not... (Nah, better believe it.) having someone such as myself doing both duties allows me to see both sides of an issue and I can communicate it up to the higher ups on either side depending on who's actually in charge of that particular policy change. |
| #23hellmuteAug 31, 2008 22:08:32 | That is what we have Solice for, or else she should be fired from the D&D area, or WotC all together. Her job is to communicate to and from WotC and the community. You make Solice obsolete and unnecessary, as does ANY WizO/CSR that is also a part of CM. It has been stated for months now that CS and CM are separate, but you are proving that to have been a lie all along and that CS seems to have been running CM all along so all problems trace back to failures of CS due to Mike's invalid CM system with "volunteer" positions, as no matter WHAT time of day, a WizO IS a paid employee of WotC, and therefore is not impartial, nor able to speak on behalf of the community itself as their job depends on otherwise which creates a conflict of interest for said WizO, and the community itself. |
| #24WebsterAug 31, 2008 22:21:40 | I'm not proving anything. Solice is whom I report to on the CM side of things. The boards are way too big for just one person. Thus, the VCL are here to help. Solice's job is to communicate between the community and WotC. But she needs help connecting to the community. Again, CS does not run CM no matter what belief you want to cling to. I'm also very impartial. I've proven that time and again and can't help it if some people choose to ignore that. There's no conflict of interest. I help the community on my off hours, and enforce the CoC when on duty. I can do this very easily thanks to my many years of experience with the community. The WizOs are on schedules 24/7, not paid 24 hours a day. (Though, that would be nice. )So, let's either take it to PM, or let it drop as it's off topic for the thread. |
| #25hellmuteAug 31, 2008 22:24:16 | So, let's either take it to PM, or let it drop as it's off topic for the thread. Then pick your position and do the proper job as either CM or CS, and create a new thread, called splitting, from this thread the posts that ARE off-topic. Or just create a new thread and merge the specific off-topic posts for this thread INTO the new thread. ![]() Since you are both CM and CS, I wouldn't think as a CS you need to ask yourself (CM) permission to do so. Then again, you could always lock this thread as CS, and ask yourself to review it as CM for which posts need to be moved to create a new thread on the particular topic that is off-topic for this thread. Then as CS again perform the duties and reopen this thread. ![]() OOPS! Sorry, seemed to bring the thread back on topic afterall didn't I? |
| #26WebsterAug 31, 2008 22:39:17 | Do you remember all those indexing problems we were having? I suspect many of those were caused by all the thread splitting that was going on a while back. I'm very nervous about trying that again. We didn't have those indexing issues way back when because the WizOs didn't split threads. So, folks who know they're discussing something off topic can be adults and start new threads, rather than continue on another thread and expect someone else to do the work and clean it up. It's like when people were just posting anything they wanted on the very first forum they see and expect the moderators to just move them to the right place later. People need to be responsible for what they post and where they post it. Sometimes locking and restarting is the best way to go. |
| #27hellmuteAug 31, 2008 22:49:14 | That is a thread in and of itself, so feel free to start it. You can quote things quicker than others around here as you have done so before, or was that mudbunny? So just quote out the sections and make a new thread for that discussion, and I will point out the flaws in that idea as well. I gre MANY things would be better off to start in the middle and start over rather than repare existing problem areas, but a forum is NOT one of those as Mike L lead people to think. It is a little more work, but cleaning up a thread should be able to be easily done IF the forums are working and stable. Again this is a matter for its own thread, but the forums as they are now should be scrapped and complately restarted, with all existing materials in some sort of archive format for people to read or even download and view offline. (Damn what a filesize!) But if moderation is done correctly reather than just the WotC way for threads, they would not need locking. Mods are often called police as that is one of their duties, and should the be actively policing threads to try to steer them back on topic or calm down flames, rather than passively waiting for reports, then there would be need for less locking to restart. Sometimes there is nothing you can do to avoid a topic splitting within itself, and have two proper choices: split the thread, or leave it alone for one topic to die out. You would hope the spin-off topic to die out and the original one to return but that is not always the case, nor should it be; depending on the OP or as I prefer it TC (thread creator) and what they want/need done for their original discussion topic. IF vBulletin or the WotC forums cannot handle the functions within it, then there are larger problems that just having to lock threads. As much as I hate this damn thing, vBulletin is one of only a few VERY stable BBS packages out there, so any real problems are with hardware, or admin/moderator inabilities to run the software, which many novices get working in a weekend..... Making policy based on faulty hardware, or corrupt software due to a programmer tampering with something and being unable to fix what he/she broke is a bad excuse for making a policy. ( boards1.wizards.com anyone?) ![]() |
| #28chrono_nexusSep 01, 2008 4:23:51 | On some of the larger and more active forums of the internet, users outnumber moderators to an astonishing degree. Because of this, these forums create no-holds sections where users can discuss anything (even contentious issues like politics). This both helps the forum relieve pressure and it consolidates all the crap for moderators. People that only love to argue, have someplace to argue. If they break the CoC, they are easier to identify, because chances are they will be breaking it in the same section where these arguments are taking place. |
| #29emwasickSep 01, 2008 14:39:59 | I'm also very impartial. I've proven that time and again and can't help it if some people choose to ignore that. There's no conflict of interest. I help the community on my off hours, and enforce the CoC when on duty. I can do this very easily thanks to my many years of experience with the community. Some people complain, but I'm glad we have at least one WizO who cares enough about the community to do a lot of extra work for free. I can't even imagine how conflict of interest could be a problem in this case, since CS and CM don't have conflicting goals. The fact that some CS employees participate in discussions and listen to our concerns strikes me as a good thing, not a bad one. |
| #30jaxgaretSep 01, 2008 17:31:38 | On the topic of Webster being a VCL and a WizO: I am very glad that Webster uses their VCL account to post on the forums, and does not restrict themselves to using their WizO account, since WizOs seem to have had their freedom to post whatever they want to say on the forums as individuals severely leashed, and Webster often posts in what I would term a very constructive manner. At least, I almost never see WizOs posting their opinions on the boards any more, as WizOs, the way that they used to. Perhaps they are all posting under alternate names now as well? |
| #31hellmuteSep 01, 2008 17:36:58 | From what some would say, this is what caused the disconnect within the community. First when WizO's were fired, and then the structure changed, and since all hell has broken lose with regards to many things as things kept changing under GZ for no foreseeable reason except for the sake of change itself. How many firefighters do you see volunteer at the fire department? seems kind of strange wouldn't you say? You don't volunteer at your place of employment. |
| #32samwiseSep 01, 2008 19:59:04 | There is no "conspiracy", and if there was, I'm sure T1 can handle it. Are you sure of that? Would you like a link to a thread on another forum where a member of this community openly states that he coordinates with other community members to watch certain people, then mass report posts they decide are a problem? |
| #33kistraSep 01, 2008 20:13:38 | Are you sure of that? I would. I have several times been accused of being part of a conspiracy and I'm 99% sure there isn't one. However, I would be curious to find out if there was one that I'm just not part of. |
| #34outlaw68Sep 01, 2008 20:19:38 | I would. Me too.. i have been accused of secret PM's so the avengers can co-ordinate and other such nonsense.. |
| #35jaxgaretSep 02, 2008 0:22:41 | Are you sure of that? I too would like to see this link. |
